Riding the American Dream

Los Angeles and San Francisco are huge cities in the American Truck Simulator map. We haven't tried to portray sprawling agglomerations of this type in our games until now, though there was a bit of a hint of it in 18 Wheels of Steel Long Haul. Our ambition is higher now, as we want to capture the feeling of driving in an actual US city, which is quite different from typical European locations.

This trend isn't only ATS bound, but you'll get much higher city-feel authenticity in new world expansions coming to Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Check out some fresh screenshots taken from American Truck Simulator!

  1. Looking good. I await in eager anticipation for the release of ATS and ETS 3 :-)

I can see a lot of attention to detail and a lot of hard work going into ATS.

    2. It's standard procedure, Lukas. By the time a game has been on the market for a year, people start asking when the next version will be released. Heck, they even create false rumours about 'the new version' (no, SimCity 6 and Age of Empires IV do NOT exist).

    3. Jeroen... stop trying to feel special. You're wrong, it happens to be an English-language from SCS's side only to reach as many people possible. The comments can be multicultural. Ask SCS about it.
This French customer does not speak English - so what? Another French person can come and reply to him.
WIth your attitude, with every "foreign" comment some asshole could go on and comment on it again - effectively doubling the nr. of posts that "most-of-the-world" doesn't understand. What good would it do? Do you even realize that your comment was as equally meaningless to him as his post was to you...?

For a sim, these graphics are absolutly amazing.

    5. Graphics actually seem very unreal and sort of cardboard-made houses and objects. ETS2 has better graphics (AA sucks *beep*'s though). Also all the "amazing scenery" photos are photoshopped to look better...

  12. As long as there aren't very big performance issues in cities like in the copy-paste cities of ETS, I say go for it!
Also looks like you need to have some form of skills to drive around those cities, that's nice.

I see you also try to feature some of LA's most vulgar and tasteless rapstars/drugdealers with that fugly yellow Escalade on the second screen! :P

    ReplyDelete
  13. Previous screens was looking better than this. Here we got shiny textures like in wheels of steel series, no Antialiasing, low quality textures.

  14. Very very very beautiful. I don't have patience! But you need to publish the release date. Is 20th of February (how excalibur say)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Excalibur only mention a release date because they want you to pre-order the game NOW. Every time the 'release date' comes close, they change it again.
It will be released when it's ready to be released, so just wait for SCS to announce it. Patience is a virtue.

  15. those ai cars needs to be rebuild. (in my opinion) I hate those fake textured wheels of them and some details like the headlight and the grill. The map looks pretty good. but I also think that after ATS it's going to be time to upgrade the engine with DX11/12 support. The averege computer is powerfull enough to run a DX11 game. it is compatible to a 5 years old pc. and by the way windows xp is no more supported.

  19. Trailers look small... Europe has that size trailers

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have to disagree, the big sleepers here are about 40% of the length of the trailers, the trucks here are limited to 80k lbs, which is actually less than europe.

      Delete
    2. What, less than in Europe? How can that be? I mean, America is supposed to be the country of "Our .......... are muuuuuuuch bigger".
Fill in the blanks yourself: roads, cars, bridges, average body weight, top-management salaries, claims for damages... :-)

      Delete
    3. Yea it is surprising. My sister was the one who let me know, she is a transport manager for European trucks. A european truck weight limit is 44 metric tons about 97000 pounds, the federal bridge law limits the maximum weight to 80000 pounds. Some states may have a higher limit (that is where it get confusing). Maybe a CDL holder in the US can add more informed information.

    1. Patience is a virtue, Danny. And seriously, what would you prefer?

Option 1: ATS will be on Steam before XMas 2014, but it will still be so buggy and unfinished that it will require at least one patch per week for the next six months.
Option 2: ATS will be available Summer 2015, will look fantastic, have terrific gameplay and will only require an occassional patch to fix some rare error.

Let's be honest here: now people are complaining about the release date, but if SCS would go for option 1 those same people would flood the blog and every ETS/ATS forum with complaints about the bugs.

Personally, I'd rather wait till ATS is in good enough shape to be released. So what if it will be Summer 2015? I have over 500 hours of ETS under my wheels, and the end is nowhere in sight. ETS will keep you a happy gamer till the release of ATS.

it is good to see all this news about ETS2 and ATS.

my question is: What about Euro Coach Simulator. You have add bus stops om map but nothing happen there, no buses, no people no cats and dogs.... nothing. And you show no more pictures about this.
Can you please say something about this? is it going or is this project in stand by?

    thank you

    1. Weather, it's got weather, sunny California weather.
      Boxtrucks, hmmmmm.
Cops, keep a very close eye on speed zones, highway patrol "panda cars" hide behind bushes, 55 in 45 zone costs.
This will be well worth the patience and the wait people. It's very early beta testing still and it's got its share of "WTF? just happened?" but it will be a great title when ready for release.

      Delete
    2. They don't have 'Panda Cars' in The States......LOL
And why do we need the Police anyway, this isn't Rig n Roll ya know.

  50. Just one caveat: in ETS2 there are still fail situations where the AI traffic stops in a position that makes it impossible to move without a collision at junctions. It's better than it used to be but it still happens. If you're going to have city driving there are 2 important issues:
    1) traffic stopping to let a truck pull out needs to stop far enough from the junction to allow for the swing of the trailer (mostly solved in recent releases of ETS2)
    2) on tight junctions, trucks need to swing wide, often approaching a turn in the "wrong" lane, in order to get the trailer around the corner. This even more common in the US where the trucks and trailers are longer, also trailer axles tend to be nearer the rear of the trailer. If you do that move in ETS2, guaranteed a car or another truck comes along the inside of you and collides with the trailer as you turn. It's OK for that to happen occasionally (like say 1%) but not every time.

Other than that - looking good and awaiting it eagerly. I hope too that ATS will have what we had in the earlier games, i.e. second-hand truck dealers. I liked that feature in ALH.

Out of interest and noting the comments from Mr. Whinealot about the graphics (don't listen to him, they're pretty good) I tried playing ALH a little while ago and comparing that with ETS2 shows just how far SCS have improved - ALH feels very artificial and clunky now!
