Truck Licensing Situation Update

We still owe you clarification on the initial set of trucks shipping as part of the first release of American Truck Simulator. We have been postponing this post until the last minute, as the situation could - and still can - always change (and for the better only now), but we need to be clear at last on where we are.

Over the past year, we have been publishing quite a lot of screenshots and videos showing several in-development truck models. Our fans have quite sharp eyes and take note of all the details, so people are naturally speculating on what's coming based on those shots.

Until recently, we were planning to include at least four trucks at launch, and our screenshots shown over time reflected this optimism. Unfortunately, finalizing the licensing talks and getting all the vehicles past the approval clearance is taking longer than anticipated, and you may have noticed some of those trucks no longer showing in the most recent batches of pictures from the game.

The result is that out of the gate, the game will ship with just two trucks.

Thanks to kind support of PACCAR group, we are happy to confirm the presence of Kenworth T 680 and Peterbilt 579 as part of the launch line-up.

After the game is released and gets into media spotlight, we will have a very important tool in our licensing talks arsenal - a successful game (fingers crossed) aimed at the relevant market. Licensing talks are often resembling the "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" problem. To obtain a license in a highly specialized field, you just don't walk into a store and get it over the counter. Unlike car manufacturers who have extensive experience with being featured in racing games, for most truck manufacturers this is all unexplored territory. We always need to find a way inside the company to reach the decision makers at marketing/licensing department, and getting our voice noticed is not easy. Just getting the chance to get out point across is often all it takes, and with American Truck Simulator out in playable form and in the hands of customers, it gives us a crucial talking point.

When the game is out on the market already at last, when we can prove its impact on trucking fans at large, we hope for more of the truck manufacturers to pay attention, to realize that it's beneficial for them to participate, and perhaps even push us to hurry so that they are not left behind the pack. We have been through this experience with the launch of Euro Truck Simulator 2, when vocal support of our fans managed to bring the game to the attention to European truck manufacturers missing in the initial version of the game.

We have progressed very well on several additional vehicles, and in the weeks after release, we are confident that will get the clearance to start adding them to the game. We will be adding them for free of course as part of regular game updates, just as is the case with the ETS2.

Now comes the time for an explicit disclaimer - any vehicles and truck brands you will see pictured below this point in text are here only for illustrative purposes, and do not constitute any guarantee that they will be appearing in the game in any particular timeframe. We have implemented them as an experiment when trying to get the door opened. As you can see some of them are already in advanced enough stage to be technically prepared for integration into the game world, yet more are semi-finished and not yet ready for integration with the game engine.

Meanwhile, we are still hard at work improving Euro Truck Simulator 2. As we are showing a ton of North American vehicles today, we did not want our European fans to feel betrayed. So we thought that a teaser image of a new truck being readied for introduction to ETS2 will cheer them up today.

    1. I will say one good thing about the Renault trucks, they have the biggest windshield of any of the trucks. I just wish they had a sleeker look to them. With this new one, it is a massive improvement which I will add to my fleet when I can but it would take a crowbar to get me out of a Scania. Still it is a step in the right direction.

    5. Agreed, that squirrel thinks he's something special, hyping up the kiddies to give him their money, also says 'lol' all the time, he's middle aged and acts like he's king of the playground.

    6. Agree 100% i tune in now and then just to see if his popularity is waining. I can't wait for the day when he looses all his "fans" and has to get a real job again. (like that will be possible)

    7. What ticks me off is that Squirrel has been playing SCS games since 2011. I have been playing SCS Software games since Hard truck 18 Wheels of steel back in 2002. That means I have more experience than he does with SCS' games.

    8. Why do people think Renault trucks are bad...company i work for (in UK) is a Renault truck dealer.....yet we have one of the..if not the biggest fleet of american trucks in Uk and 1 of 2 International Lonestars(other one 30 miles down road with competition)....so are Renault trucks still uncool:) ok so all the US trucks are wreckers but still....Renault allow us to own them even though they aren't Renault or Volvo..so in my book. Renault trucks are good:)and great work scs....was worried pete 389 wasn't going to appear...

    14. I work at mick Gould commercials and the other company just down the road with only 1-2 us trucks is my recovery u can only import us trucks as recovery trucks as u can't run a regular us tractor unit unless it's 25 years old or more but in recovery these don't apply..if ur between London and Dover look out for us:) a lot of towing companies have. 1-2 us wrecks but our whole fleet is American... Just imported 3 new trucks 2 389s and the second Lonestar only one of 3 is on road lone star should hit road in a week or 2 with 3rd 389 still waiting for import

    15. Just search Mick Gould commercials on Facebook to see what's going on.. Pretty cool stuff at mo

    16. Just while I'm on the subject SCS what about the possibility of wreckers in the future. I'm sure people would like to have a go at recovery to especially as mod makers on the most part have over looked it... However I understand it would require a whole new set of coding for under lift and recovery boom

    2. You misunderstood Joshua, but you're both right. The truck model is LoneStar like you said. Navistar is the name of International Trucks' parent company, just like PACCAR owns Kenworth, Peterbilt, and DAF.

  10. I thought Volvo is one consortium, Europe and US and that there won't be a problem with license. Maybe they will get a grip. I don't know what is better, wait for the license or put the unnamed trucks to the game. For SCS it's better to wait till it's settled, but for us players maybe not.

    1. Mack Trucks are also owned by Volvo AB, so theoretically if one could be licenced, so could the other.

The same thing could be said for Freightliner. They're a part of Daimler, just like Mercedes-Benz.

I hope the modding community is watching and can help us players out with some American trucks after launch with some extra trucks like they have for many years for ETS2.

  36. Just as with ETS2 ATS's longevity will be COMPLETELY down to modders, how many would still be playing ETS2 if it was the base game without mods, under 50% at least. Within a week there'll probably be a better range of trucks, (some cabovers would be appreciated!). SCS only supply a base game, it's the community which makes the game what it is.

Through work I got to speak with some guys who are pretty far up the hierarchy at Volvo Belgium and they were unanimously very pleased about their trucks being featured in ETS2, so I thought if any manufacturer would be on board from release in ATS it would be them. But, yeah, finding the right person to speak to in any organisation can be difficult.

On one hand, it's odd that there are difficulties obtaining licences from the North American departments of companies such as Volvo (Volvo and Mack trucks) and Daimler (Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner & Western Star); companies whose brands are already in ETS 2. On the other hand, it's not surprising that the North American arm of a corporation is somewhat independent of the European arm.

  74. There are a few American truck mods for ETS2 out there, maybe these can be used in ATS until SCS, can get licences. Only two trucks, but at least it gets the game released so we can play it now, Well done SCS for all your work.

  75. Don't see any reason at all to buy second ets2

SCS generally not interested in good games. 2 track... ahah:)

The producers will never be good games. The backlog in 10 years from modern world of gaming.

Rig N Roll is hundred times better and more exciting game

    1. yeah, no, Rig N Roll was ok, but you had to race towards your destination. you start out with a decent size company, and the story was kind of boring. ATS is better because, you can go independent and not expand your company or make a logistic empire.

  76. There is a key issue, it is not easy to meet the demand of collectors, collectors will want to get all possible models for your game, obviously paying for it. Therefore, there is a potential market and determines that reason game logic. Given this, it should be very clear that if licenses for the virtual market is not open, people simply diverted outside traditional care brands and new styles will be imposed from the vast communication world .. Therefore, the cultural choice Always popular and determine the future of a brand, meaning that if the process of the web and its advertising and its icons. It is very difficult to put together a game in the middle of this issue. Honestly I would focus on older, customized models or with different accessories, and I focus first manufacturers of accessories and customization if you want to include the models in juegos..Ademas the subject of oil, gasoline brands, carburetors, airlines and car brands ranging AI in the game as they finish to convince or influence the rest .. If you want to leave you simply will peterbild Chevrolet advertising and negotiates them inside the juego..Vera of Thus, many brands will want to be present within the game.

  80. You should add some drivetrain (gearbox&axle) sounds to ETS 2 instead of some shitty ugly modern trucks. I think it's easier as it's just adding another sound effect referring to different events. I never drove a truck from models existing in game already that doesn't whine when accelerating, changing gears, putting into neutral, and it weren't tires. Sadly the ETS 2 got same error from the beginning - when you press neutral, you hear only the engine on idle, and from some newer versions you added the tire noise like if it was something hard to make (people added it in mods earlier, sadly gears are not that easy to do...). Drive any truck, hear this, implement this. Anyway the models and game itself are good job and I gonna be one of the first who buy an electronic version of ATS to support you, SCS. Greetings.

  81. Looking further to see ATS in action, not long to go now :)

I have to admit that i am curious to see how ATS, feels and sound like, if it will be a much different gaming experience then ETS2.
After putting more then 700hours in ETS2, i am a little burned out on this game and nothing about it excites me anymore. Hope ATS will bring a fresher gaming experience as i am keen on playing some new trucking game...

  88. Any chance of a Scania T or R Longline? Since you have made Scania Truck Driving simulator and it was the only brand licensed in ets2 I'm sure scania would let use put a T or R longline in ats.

  89. Actually SCS, its not just about "getting your voice heard" (as you suggest), but also, its about "offering something worth listening to".... and a project people can take serious.

Unfortunately for you SCS, you thought you could bring your empty slotted game, (with all graphics and no gameplay)... to North America, and people here would kneel at your feet and give you whatever you wanted.......

How did that work out for you?

The only reason ETS2 is as popular as it is, and as good a game as it is... is because of the modding community. The modders made ETS2 worth buying.... and playing. Without the modding community ETS2 likely would have sunk a long time ago. I trust the same will be true for ATS......

... and this is what the manufacturers are likely thinking as well. Why should we (the manufacturers) invest our time and property in a company that depends so heavily on everyone else building and selling their game for them?

Just in the last couple years alone countless posts requesting things for the ETS2 game were posted. And you SCS ingored them (us). Now you want our help to sell ATS for you so you can what???? Continue ignoring us????

Where's the ability to purchase our own trailers? Why can't we see our trucks parked in our garage? When are you going to fix the company management part of the game? When exactly are you going to do anything that doesn't involve a new road, truck, and yet another freaking paintpack???????

The saddest part of all of this, is that we the fans, and supporters of you (SCS), have to suffer your incompetance.

    3. Well said. Seriously, who gives a toss about stupid paint packs? Fix the game - the sounds - go for a decent ride in ALL truck brands and take note of sounds (gearbox, engine, road noise, etc., how they react with different loads / weights.

The graphics - stop copying & pasting the same boring scenery (ETS2), how is it possible to have dust on a gravel (unpaved) road when it is supposedly bucketing down with rain??

The engine sounds are terrible, so fake I can't bear to drive some of the (standard) trucks.

These games are supposed to be "simulators", make them simulators not games!! Make them in real time - if it takes 2.5 hours to travel 200km (based on max limited speed of 100kph in Australia) then it should take 2.5 hours to travel "in game".

Why can I travel at speeds greater than 150kmh in these modern European trucks when they are fitted with speed limiters (can't be modified) from the factory? (I used to drive a 2008 MAN, 2006 MAN, Volvo FL10 (no limiter as it was manufactured in 1985)).

SCS is a European company releasing games worldwide so they should be including vehicles that are available worldwide (subject to licensing of course), include the bonneted trucks not just the cab overs.

Why are our garages empty? Why cant we repair our owned trucks in our garages? Why can't we buy our own trailers like IRL (once again, simulator vs game)? Why can't our comapny name / logo appear on owned trucks and garages, if you choose your company name at profile setup why isn't it placed on garages / trucks when they are purchased? If you can design paint packs, surely you can apply the same principal to names/logos.

It does appear that SCS release a basic game (not simulator) and wait for the modding community to fix the inadequacies of SCS "games".

Looking at the ATS map screenshots, it won't take very long to visit every depot shown in the screenshot.

  91. Not many trucks. And I was hoping the Volvo would be available. But at least we got the modding community. I give it two weeks before we see the T800, 389, 351, VNL and other fan favorites. Hopefully the RTA team will give us a hand converting their trucks us who purchased their mods as well.

  93. Can't wait, but I'm a little disappointed by the licensing approach. If acquiring licensing is a matter of having material to offer, why not approach the issue the same way they have in past games and ETS2 when it came out.

I can't remember exactly, but there were trucks that were in the games that resembled authentic trucks with minimal differences and branding that was close to the actual manufacturer name. I think "Peterbilt" was under the branding "Pacific" in one of them. And weren't some of the trucks in ETS2 under different names in the beginning as well?

I'd rather see SCS support its fans/customers by having a dozen off-branded trucks and get licensing when they can, then be stuck with minimal equipment to choose from.

  94. maybe add the route to the extreme...:)

  95. WHAT?? ONLY TOO TRUCKS IF SCS HAVE THE KENWORTH AND PETERBILT LICENSES WHY WAIT FOR THE Kenworth W900 N Peterbilt 389

    ReplyDelete

    1. From my experience with WMD and Project CARS I can say that each licensed item (vehicle or track) has to be green lit by the license holder.
What they do is check if anything is missing, wrong, bugged, out of order and so on. Once they are happy with how the in this case truck is designed and functioning, sounding and so on, than they will give the game developer the green lite to put the vehicle in the game.

So basically the license holder has the final say in if a truck model is finished, and when it is than SCS can get it in the game with their approval.

  96. Nice....Not much of a Renault fan but hey, that's another truck I can buy and drive....would like to try it. Also I really like the look of the Pete 389....Tough choice to make now do I go for Peterbilt or do I go for Kenworth ? I like them both but choosing either the 389 or the W900 is going to be tough.

  102. Kenworth and Peterbilt are my favorite brands anyways!

  103. I can understand the desire for more trucks, but i've always enjoyed exploring the world in ETS2 moreso than the different trucks. I tend to stick with the volvo (especially before the sound update, it sounded better by far then) as I like the sound and interior as well as view out and relative dash position. More trucks = better, for sure, but more interested in features and map details than having x truck in game.

I also kinda like the stance of avoiding the phony branded trucks. Just kinda lowers the feel of quality a notch. That said, if a license is never coming, by all means just release the "Mick" brand truck.
