Iceland: Ferries + Transparent Water

Sometimes, the next great trucking adventure begins where the road ends! Today, we're setting sail for Iceland as we take a closer look at the ferry connections featured in our upcoming Iceland DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2 which releases on November 10th! Ready to come aboard? Let's take a look at what's in store!

Unlike most destinations in Euro Truck Simulator 2, reaching Iceland isn't quite as simple as following the road. With the North Atlantic separating the island from mainland Europe, truckers will need to take to the seas. To make this journey possible, our map designers have included several ferry connections from existing European ports, along with an additional crossing to help you explore Iceland once you've arrived.

The first connection takes truckers from Hirtshals in Denmark to Seyðisfjörður, a picturesque village nestled among the mountains and fjords of eastern Iceland. This route is based on a real-world ferry service operated by Smyril Line.

Another option will take truckers from Rotterdam's Europoort in the Netherlands to Þorlákshöfn, located on Iceland's southwestern coast. In reality, this route is operated by Smyril Line Cargo as a freight service, but we've adapted it into a regular ferry connection for players to use with their trucks and trailers.

We're also introducing a connection between Ålesund in Norway and Seyðisfjörður. While this route doesn't exist in real life, we've included it to provide more travel options and connect some of our newest map content. There's also a little history behind this choice, as Norway and Iceland share a maritime heritage dating back to the ninth century, when settlers sailed from Norway to Iceland. As part of this addition, the previously inaccessible ferry port in Ålesund will also open to players!

But the ferries aren't just for reaching Iceland! Truckers can also travel between Stykkishólmur and Brjánslækur, across the beautiful Breiðafjörður bay. This real world crossing passes through an area famous for its countless small islands and rich birdlife. It also offers a useful alternative to navigating the winding stretches of Route 60 in the northwest of the island.

Speaking of water, we're also gradually adding locations with transparent water to Euro Truck Simulator 2, which will make their first appearance in the Iceland DLC. This allows players to see rocks and terrain beneath the water's surface, particularly in shallower areas. We've also added water foam effects in certain locations, such as fast-flowing rivers. These improvements will be visible across dozens of locations in Iceland, adding a little more detail to the surrounding environment.

However, there's one thing to keep in mind before setting sail! Transporting your truck and trailer by ferry can come with a rather hefty price tag, so be sure to plan your journeys and finances accordingly. And of course, if you'd rather skip the sea voyage, you can always make use of Quick Travel to reach your garage in Iceland.

We hope you've enjoyed this look at the ferry connections coming to our Iceland DLC which releases on November 10th! Don't forget to add it to your Steam Wishlist to be notified of its release. We can't wait for you to explore the land of Ice and Fire! Until next time, happy trucking!
