Building Nordic Horizons with Ivo

In today’s special blog post, we’re excited to take you behind the scenes of the upcoming Nordic Horizons DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2. We sat down with Ivo, our ETS Map Lead, to talk about the creative and technical process behind bringing the Nordic landscapes to life. From intricate road networks to iconic landmarks, Ivo shares how the team is crafting an immersive experience for players exploring the northern reaches of Europe.

Ivo plays a key role in shaping both the big picture and the fine details of the project. When asked what his work involves, he explained, "As one of the Map Leads on Nordic Horizons, I’m responsible for both large and small components of the project — its overall shape as well as the day-to-day progress." His current focus is on monitoring progress and offering feedback, though his involvement has evolved over time: "Before that, I worked on the foundational layout of the urban and road networks, and earlier still I was involved with the research team, cooperating on time estimates, asset lists, and similar tasks."

Reflecting on his experiences during development, Ivo shared that he had the opportunity to see the real-life inspirations firsthand. When asked whether he had visited Norway, Sweden, or Finland, he replied, "Yes, I was actually part of the research trip during the early stages of the project’s development. It was a fantastic experience, and I’m very glad I had the opportunity to visit many of the locations we’re recreating." The team ensured they covered all countries included in the DLC and took note of the diverse landscapes — a crucial step in capturing the spirit of the region.

Describing the research process behind Nordic Horizons, Ivo emphasized its significance: "Research is a fundamental part of every project we do, and it starts well before any actual map creation begins." The team relied extensively on online resources to gather information about everything from road laws and industries to cultural and natural highlights, all of which, together with our internal rules, influenced the project’s scope and planning.

When asked what stands out most in terms of map design or architecture, Ivo highlighted the sheer scale of the region: "The vast distances, without a doubt. We’re covering an ambitiously large area, rich in stunning natural scenery but — apart from parts of the coast — very sparsely populated." He noted that these realities required difficult choices, saying, "To make our in-game world work, we had to make some compromises. In some places, a few towns had to be cut, while in others, we added smaller but important settlements at strategic points to maintain the economic flow. Without them, some areas might not offer any jobs to players due to the sheer distances. Such compromises are sometimes necessary due to the scale of our game world."

In response to what he’s most looking forward to seeing finished in the Nordic Horizons map, Ivo responded, "I’m lucky enough to be able to watch our talented Map Designers bring beautiful scenes to life, and although some of them still need a bit of polish, many of my personal 'wish list' locations have already come true, which is very satisfying. If I had to name one in particular, I’m especially happy that players will be able to drive all the way to Nordkapp — as far north as it’s possible to go in mainland Europe."

Looking back at his career, Ivo explained how his role has changed compared to past projects. In response to a question about similar work he’s done, he said, "I used to work as a map designer, and Nordic Horizons is my first project in a Map Lead role. It’s a big shift." While he occasionally still contributes small scene designs, his focus is now broader: "My 'signature' is present in much of the city and road layout, even though the final visual result is a collaborative effort involving many talented people."

As for the experience itself, Ivo shared what has brought him the most satisfaction: "I’ve enjoyed watching the map evolve and seeing our team’s hard work gradually take shape into an impressive expansion." He added that each development phase has its own hurdles but also its own rewards: "The scale of the project has exceeded my expectations in many ways, and every stage of development brings new challenges."

When asked about the landmarks players can look forward to, Ivo offered a rich preview: "If we count natural scenery as landmarks, then there are countless ones! But in terms of man-made landmarks, we’ve included quite a few: the majestic Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø, picturesque town centres with churches, town halls, and train stations; industrial landmarks like the mines in Kiruna, and quirky tourist spots like Santa’s Village in Rovaniemi."

Finally, when asked what he believes players will enjoy most in Nordic Horizons and what they shouldn't miss, his answer was clear: "Definitely the landscapes themselves, the distances and the solitude." He described the journey through the DLC as something transformative: "I’d suggest you travel from the south all the way up north, and you’ll experience a gradual transformation of vegetation, longer daylight hours, and vast stretches of beautiful, almost untouched wilderness." Says Ivo.

Louisiana: Cities #2

In our previous blog, we gave you a glimpse into some of the cities featured in our upcoming Louisiana DLC for American Truck Simulator. Today, we’re back with Part 2, where we’ll explore four more locations that drivers will be able to visit and deliver to. From industrial ports to small border towns, let’s take a closer look at what awaits!

Lake Charles

Situated in the southwest corner of Louisiana, Lake Charles is a dynamic blend of heavy industry and entertainment. Home to several chemical plants and oil refineries, it’s one of the state’s most important industrial centers. But there’s another side to the city, one lined with towering hotels and glitzy casinos, making it a magnet for nightlife and leisure.

Deliver to industrial giants such as the Oil Refinery or catch a glimpse of famous resorts and arcades. Whilst you won't be able to visit these entertainment establishments, our team have recreated them in detail, bringing some of these well known landmarks to life!

DeRidder

Not far from the Texas border lies DeRidder, a charming small town surrounded by forests and known for its lumber and paper industries. While modest in size, its industrial presence is significant, and both the sawmill and paper mill here will play a role in your deliveries.

Players will also notice some of DeRidder’s most iconic landmarks, including the historic Gothic Jail, a rare piece of local architecture, and the Beauregard Parish Courthouse. The town's humble charm and regional character offer a slower pace compared to Louisiana’s larger cities—but that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to be done.

Port Fourchon

Port Fourchon isn’t a city in the traditional sense, it’s a sprawling industrial hub located at the southernmost tip of Louisiana. Known primarily for its role in the offshore oil and gas industry, the area is home to shipyards, oil terminals, and a busy river port, all of which are represented in the DLC.

Unlike other places in the state, Port Fourchon carries a rugged and weather-worn identity, having withstood multiple hurricanes over the years. This gave our team a unique opportunity to depict a less polished environment, reflective of the real-world challenges faced by this critical port.

Alexandria

Centrally located in the state, Alexandria is where many of Louisiana’s major highways, I-49, US-165, US-167, and US-71 intersect, making it a vital transportation hub for the state. For drivers, that means plenty of options when it comes to routes and cargo opportunities.

In the game, you'll traverse this logistical heartland while spotting local landmarks such as the large powerplant, several distinctive churches, and the broader urban area that has made Alexandria a regional connector for generations. Whether you’re passing through or making a delivery, it’s a key stop for any driver!

For those who may have missed our earlier announcement, Road Trip is a brand-new addition to ATS that introduces a more dynamic way to explore the game world beyond traditional trucking. This new gameplay module allows players to step behind the wheel of a variety of vehicles, expanding the ATS experience while remaining true to the spirit of the open road.

A. P. 101 Gaming

"SCS has done it once again! I really enjoyed the contrast of driving through small, remote towns and larger, bustling cities. It made the whole state feel alive and diverse. Trucking along peaceful country roads and then jumping onto major interstates like I-80 was super fun. Of course, one of the first places I had to check out was the largest truck stop, and SCS didn’t disappoint; it is HUGE! The new and unique industries are fantastic. Plus, there are so many small and big landmarks across the map. The attention to detail is absolutely incredible."

DaSimSimma

"I’ve always dreamed of visiting the world’s largest truck stop, but never thought a game would get me there first. The Iowa DLC surprised me with how personal it felt—pulling off at the biggest truck stop in the game and just soaking it in was one of those moments that remind you why ATS is so special. It’s more than a game—it’s a way to explore the country in ways you didn’t think were possible." - DaSimSimma

Arrow's Realm

"The Iowa DLC for American Truck Simulator is another stellar addition to the game’s line-up of expansions. As a detail enthusiast, I began my journey in Des Moines, where I spent over an hour marveling at the meticulously crafted cityscape. From iconic buildings and monuments to the vibrant flowers that brighten the surroundings, the attention to detail is impressive. Eager to explore further, I set out across the state, driving from city to city and uncovering real-world landmarks beautifully recreated by the development team. Kudos to SCS Software for making Iowa—a relatively flat state—visually engaging and far from monotonous. Even after hours of gameplay, I’m still soaking up new details like a sponge, though I’ve yet to spot that elusive Amish horse and cart. If you’re seeking hours of immersive exploration and fun, the Iowa DLC is a must-have. SCS Software continues to raise the bar with their commitment to realism and technical excellence. I’m already excited for what they’ll deliver next." - Arrow's Realm

Kworey

"DLC after DLC, the quality standards always increase. Iowa DLC's small details are outstanding. I am not familiar with the United States since I am from Europe, but when driving in American Truck Simulator, I can really feel the vibe of what it would be like in real life. Congratulations to everyone involved in the development of the DLC."  - kworey

SCS On The Road: Star Nation Experience 2025

We're back with another unforgettable episode of SCS On The Road! Join Oscar and Beny as they take you back to Oregon for the Star Nation Experience 2025. Partnering once again with our friends at Western Star, the event brought together eight lucky contestants from across North America for a weekend packed with adrenaline, adventure, and—of course—trucks!

Among the group were two members of the American Truck Simulator community, Tyler and Alex. Tyler, a seasoned truck driver, brought his real-world experience to the challenge. Meanwhile, Alex, despite it being his first time ever behind the wheel of a real truck, was brimming with excitement to test drive the powerful Western Star 49X! You can find more information about the two ATS participants in our previous blog.

Kicking off the action-packed weekend was a team-based competition designed to test both skills and spirit. Tyler and Alex found themselves on opposing teams, turning friendly rivalry into pure entertainment.

One of the highlights of Saturday was a test track experience. But before participants got behind the wheel of a real truck, their first challenge was to complete a course on the SCS Motion Simulator running American Truck Simulator. Once completed, they moved on to driving real trucks on the test track, taking on a series of driving challenges that brought the in-game experience to life.

Another exciting moment came during a challenge at the High Desert Proving Grounds. Participants had to reverse trucks downhill, then stop precisely at a marked zone to score points. Next, they tackled another challenge at a quarry – guessing the weight of a gravel-loaded trailer and spreading it evenly between two cones.

The adventure didn’t slow down on Sunday. With the sun barely rising over Oregon, the group kicked things off with a fly fishing session. Then came ATV riding, where the drivers embraced the dust, speed, and freedom of the Deschutes wilderness.

We were once again blown away by the skill and dedication of our American Truck Simulator community. Watching Alex transition from virtual to real trucking with such confidence and enthusiasm was especially moving – a true example of how games can spark real-world aspirations. Tyler’s journey was just as inspiring, as American Truck Simulator played a big role in helping him choose his future path in trucking and earning his CDL.

We’re incredibly proud of Tyler, Alex, and all the participants who made this year’s Star Nation Experience unforgettable. Whether behind a wheel or in front of a monitor, the passion for trucking runs deep in the #BestCommunityEver.

A huge thank you goes out to Western Star for hosting and organizing this amazing event, and for continuing to believe in the powerful connection between simulation and reality. Until next time, keep on truckin’, and we’ll see you out there on the road!

Nordic Horizons: Settlements

On your journey across the upcoming Nordic Horizons DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2, you’ll encounter far more than iconic cities and majestic landscapes. Scattered throughout Norway, Sweden, and Finland are numerous smaller settlements, each with its own unique charm, history, and character. Today, we’d like to give you a closer look at some of the destinations that await you along the road.

From quiet fishing villages nestled along the Norwegian coastline to peaceful inland communities in Sweden and Finland, our teams have worked hard to capture the atmosphere and natural beauty of these locations. Whether you're hauling cargo, taking a break, or simply passing through, we hope these places leave a lasting impression.

Norway

Located in the heart of a stunning southern fjord region lies Skei, welcoming drivers with its picturesque views and tranquil surroundings. This small settlement offers a restful pause before heading into the more mountainous terrain to the north.

You’ll also come across Åndalsnes, a town surrounded by steep mountains. This settlement is known as the "Alpine village by the fjord." It marks the start of scenic routes and offers stunning views, making it a memorable stop for any driver passing through western Norway.

In the wide-open tundra of Finnmark lies Kautokeino, a cultural heartland of the Sámi people. It’s a quiet stop on your journey, featuring traditional red wooden houses that offer a glimpse into the region’s distinctive character.

Perched on Norway’s rugged western coast is Myre, a small fishing town surrounded by scattered islands and stormy seas. The winding road that leads here passes through breathtaking landscapes, rewarding drivers with views and a sense of isolation rarely found elsewhere.

Sweden

Our first stop in Sweden is Vittangi, tucked away deep within Swedish Lapland. Founded by Henrik Mickelsson Kyrö in 1674, the village sits amid boreal forests, offering peaceful drives through nature and glimpses of wooden cottages scattered across the landscape.

Next is Dorotea, known as the “Southern Gateway to Lapland”. Though small, it is a proud community situated by lakes and surrounded by wilderness—an ideal resting point before venturing further north.

Lastly, we highlight Ytterhogdal, a charming spot in central Sweden that invites drivers to slow down and take in the serenity of the countryside. With its pine forests, calm lakes, and peaceful village life, it offers a welcome contrast to busier roads.

Finland

In the heart of Finland lies Viitasaari, where quiet roads, expansive lakes, and a strong local identity come together. It’s a common stop for drivers travelling north or south, providing not only fuel but also a refreshing pause amid Finnish nature.

Another Finnish destination to look forward to is Siilinjärvi, which offers a slower pace of life. Surrounded by forests and lakes, this town combines natural beauty with essential services for travellers. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the calm of central Finland.

While these are just a handful of the settlements featured in this blog, rest assured that many more await discovery. Each has been carefully crafted by our map, asset, and art teams to reflect the spirit of its real-world counterpart, from architecture and layout to the surrounding nature and terrain.

Alongside these communities, you’ll drive along countless scenic byways and rural landscapes that define the Nordic experience. We encourage every trucker to pause, pull over, and take in the breathtaking world that stretches far beyond the cities.

Eager to hit the Nordic roads? Be sure to add Nordic Horizons to your Steam Wishlist! Stay connected with us on XFacebookInstagramBlueskyand YouTube, or by subscribing to our newsletter for all the latest updates. See you on the road!

Louisiana: Wetlands and Forests

Louisiana's lakes, rivers, swamps, bayous, and forests showcase a remarkable variety of landscapes. Today, we will take a look at the beautiful nature you will find in the Pelican State while on the road in this upcoming map expansion for American Truck Simulator!

Louisiana's warm, subtropical climate, thanks to its location within the Gulf of Mexico, sets the stage for some truly one-of-a-kind scenery. It's a big shift from some of the landscapes in our previous map expansions. The Pelican State's terrain is broadly divided into three distinct regions: dense forests, sweeping prairies, and expansive marshlands, each offering its own unique scenery and atmosphere. The state offers 22 national parks as well as many impeccable nature trails, paddling routes, fishing areas, and more.

The Mississippi River has played a big role in shaping Louisiana's landscape. For thousands of years, it carried huge amounts of dirt and sand from all across the country and slowly built up the southern coastline, pushing it miles out into the Gulf of Mexico. As the river shifted its path over time, it left behind old river branches that slowly sank and wore away, forming the mix of marshes, lakes, and winding bayous that make this area so unique today. You may follow the river upstream if you are traveling U.S. Route 65, which winds along the Mississippi border.

If you want to experience more of the bayou region, head down to the southern coast. From shadowy swamps with cypress trees to sunlit marshes, the bayous are home to unique wildlife, including diverse species of birds and alligators. This area is also vital for harvesting shrimp, oysters, and fish. For a scenic drive through this natural wonder, follow the LA-82.

However, the lowlands are not the only type of landscape found in Louisiana. If you venture further north, you will discover the Red River valley, which has a low-elevation relief and typically features red soil. In the northern part of the state, you will mainly find some rolling hills, which you may come across while driving along I-20.

And that's it for today! Remember to add the Louisiana DLC to your Steam Wishlist and don't forget to give our X/TwitterInstagramFacebookBluesky, and TikTok a follow as you'll receive updates about our games straight to your feed! Osubscribe to our newsletter to stay informed. We look forward to sharing more with you soon.
