Real World Inspirations

The virtual world of American Truck Simulator is necessarily depending on artistic license when depicting reality. The scale is much different; when a hundred-mile stretch of real road must be passed in a matter of a few minutes in our game, there is simply not enough room to cram all the real-world bends, intersections, and landmarks into it.

But we try hard to have many recognizable places and details into ATS, to make the world exploration more fun, to make the impression believable.

Here is a few comparison pictures (with real location photos courtesy of Google Maps, thank you for all the help Google!) of some places in the game that represent our approach. We do not want to overhype this aspect though, what you see are carefully selected highlights. The game can of course only manage to take inspiration from a tiny subset of all the available landmarks, we are understandably not covering all of Los Angeles or Las Vegas street by street.

Please check out our American Truck Simulator facebook page if you want to see several more world comparison pictures.

  1. Guys add more features like realistic handling. Everything is faked, the only real is i see the truck logos :/ No proper brake, map scaling for sure gonna be 1:25 +++, driving at 80 km/h looks like sport car 170 km/h

    1. improve the rain system.. It is complete joke.. Only affects delay like 1-2 seconds in brakes.. No skidding or harder steering.. Just joke, types like this really doesnt deserve to be called simulator, though i play every day :))

    4. And also there's no real crash physics :c
I would like to smash a truck in a wall in like a houndred miles per hour and see how the truck gets torned into bits! >:D
But SCS is way to selfish/lazy to listen to fans...

BTW I agree with you Acalukas, the handling needs to be improved, as well as, in my opinion, the sounds. Especially the MAN engine sound that sounds like sh*t.

    5. This is a truck simulator, not a crash simulator...if you want that, play BeamNG.ETS2 is totally playable without crash physics. Also,if you don't like the stock SCS handling, sounds etc.,there are mods for that.Any more complains? If not,end of story...

    8. Stuff like seeing trucks being smashed to bits is not an easy feature to acquire, and has nothing to do with selfishness and lazyness. It's very hard to get brand licensing, and the brand holders make a lot of demands. Things that could be slightly detrimental to the brand, like its truck being torn to pieces are near to never allowed by the brand and will only result in you not getting the license. Some game developers had to go to hell and back to be able to show so much as a scratch on the paint of a licensed brand, and you certainly pay accordingly if, and that is if, you do mange to get a license allowing that. Stuff is not simply as easy as; we want it, so you should make it.

    11. Adrian Zgripcea,

may I ask you when you started playing SCS games? Which was your first one? I for my self started playing their games back in 2003 with Hard Tuck: 18 Wheels of Steel. Followed by 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America, which was the point when I really started to modify their games. With the release of 18 Wheels of Steel: Pedal to the Metal the european community started to grow and we started making actual models for the games with Z-Mod! So you can see, my journery with their games is fairly long and I also paid them enough + the shipping for importing their games from the USA into Germany.

With those information in mind, please keep reading and see that I pretty much being a such called hater. But do I really hate, or do I state facts? Hm, your call in the end.

Point is, SCS didn't yet changed their attitude how to produce their games. Just alone the Map Editor and the way maps are produced haven't changed since 18WoS: Across America. The sad thing about that is, that it's not the state of the art anymore and long ago other games brought ways to produce maps that leave SCS's approach in shame. Check the Train Simulator 2010+ for what is possible.
SCS never thought about making their games a sandbox game. Just produce the base and let the community handle the rest. Other games like OFP/ArmA series show that a healthy community can do anything. Unfortunally SCS didn't do anything about the Community until it was way too late and all the people from the old community were gone and moved to other games and producers. Nowadays you barely see scratch made models. Just alone the Scania models around are still the same that SheYr0 made years ago.

The physical system sucks hairy balls to be franky. Not even with the amount of option we have nowadays you can make realistical physical effects. I've done btw. the first physics mod ever on Haulin'. The weather system indeed is not great at all. Visual effects nor phsyical effects are close to realistic. There is also no way to make actual scripts. This game is based on the most easy and ballant file system. The engine can hardly handle alot of animations. The AI is still terrible, not as terrible as on Haulin, ETS1 etc. but not really smart eigther.

Cosidering all this, yes it might sound harsh and ungrateful. But in the end SCS screwed it up back in the day, properly long before you even discovered Truck "Simulator". I wouldn't call it a Simulator tho. It's an arcade game in the end. I'm still waiting for Sabre to answer my mail from back in the day when I asked them nicely to lend the community a hand to keep their games alive.
We offered them our models for free, we just wanted some help solving problems that we couldn't. And trust me, we solved alot of stuff you properly never heard of.

      Sincerely,
      luder

      Boring is boring..
Gay softwares takes a whole decade to make a simply 1km road..
How many people working in this project really?
A mod team of 5 people would make whole europe at scaling like 1:10. About scs? 30 people couldnt make a one freaking small one-way street!
Hell accept the true, they only want people to buy their crappy DLC Paintjobs. Graphically if you compare older SCS trucking games and the ETS 2, you can see a bit difference, but in developing streets, citys, are complete same :/
This game without any mods, i could just wipe my ass with it

Also i found some article about Euro1 as top 1 boring game.. I must agree on that :)) (http://www.shortlist.com/tech/gaming/10-most-boring-video-games)

    15. The only thing that worth in this game is Scandinavia, and new Mercedes. I like em. Other than that, all is trash. Europe almost identical, 2 types of gas station for whole state. I see some really nice trailers parked at Scandiavian port's.. Maybe they couldn't use em...?
I'm really fed up from TradeAux, or similar crappy trailer type.
This game isnt simulator.. Is sim-you-later. No real braking intensity, no real acceleration, truck doesnt feel as truck rolf. I feel like driving my father's van Iveco's, not a truck loaded with 30 ton trailer.. If you really want to see power of truck, you are forced to use 100 bhp engine lol

    18. SCS makes the game how it is, but modders make it much better. So we don't need to bitch so much, just download mods and be happy.

Also, to fix things like the feeling of speed, open the Developer Console and adjust WARP accordingly, somewhere around "warp 08 - warp 07". But some console commands aren't multiplayer compatible.

    19. As far as the physics is concerned, you can get a mod called Realistic Physics. This mod has been around in some form or other since the game was released. I've seen it in action. Not sure if there is an update for 1.22 yet.

    3. "Simulation" is a gaming genre that incorporates games that cannot fit into the other major genres. In ETS2 and ATS you are not racing, you are not doing an RTS. It is not a firt person shooter, and you obviously aren't stealing vehicles and purposefully wrecking them (GTA anyone?). Anyone who has even a third rate education knows that "Simulator" and "Simulation" by definiteion has taken on a new, broader perspective. There are now MANY games with "simulator" in the title, but do not go into the depth of simulation like other programs do.

A title means nothing. Anyone looking to buy software needs to look into the description of the game, and see what they are buying. I have, and so far I have gotten exactly what SCS advertises - a driving game where you get to relax and drive trucks. Nowhere in any SCS media have they advertised half the things that people here seem to think are supposed to be in a game like this.

If you want full systems simulation for commercial vehicles, you get what you pay for. you are looking at paying hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get such software. For 20 bucks you will NEVER get the depth of "simulation" that you feel entitled to. So far I think the cheapest vehicle simulation out there for the money compared to depth of systems simulation is OMSI.

Speaking of which - all the people going completely nuts and falling apart because ETS2 doesn't have buses ... have you even tried OMSI?

We need better weather, i can see how implementing seasons on this engine would be very difficult, but how about some work on the rain effect, that completely sucks...
How about getting that dx11 support...
How about better interiors for the truck....
How about better economy in the game...
How about owning our own trailers in the game...
How about better physics and better environment sound...

  12. Guys, you have your requests, demands etc, but you need to understand, that ATS is not a new better quality in SCS Software. It's almost the same game as Euro Truck 2 with only minor new assets. Pavel Sebor said, that ATS is just a big bow to american players with their territories. It's sad that most of the game will be copied from Euro Truck Simulator 2 (even the menus etc) - they didn't care to create completely new stuff. That's why I will not buy it, but still support Euro Truck 2 (if it will be developed after ATS release, because American Truck Simulator will be their NUMERO UNO for sure).

My map MHAPro map will be for sure still on Internet for ETS2 !! If I will work for Public on ATS, that will be big question. Without some better support, I wont.

    4. They probably chose to keep the same menus because it costs money to hire someone to make them. (They don't make their own btw)

Sure it might be nice to have a different UI, but a new UI is completely unnecessary when they could use that money to put else where. Be it licensing for truck brands, future DLC work etc.

For example, the last picture of Las Vegas, you can add left turn signals and have a proper Nevada-style gantry. But of course, map modders will be able to do that. ProMods have already done so with their improved intersections for ETS2. I'm really certain they will be working on these maps in ATS.

  32. Hey SCS! I want to see a modern game! If this is America, the game should be in American style.
Where go my drivers, I don't see them on the road, not in the garage!?
The police to catch up, if I'm not stopped for the violation.

It looks like ETS2 second , the emptiness that I play and just want to sleep.

  35. It's a pitty that you changed a lot of things since ETS. 18WoS: Haulin was really awesome! Ownable trailers, active police, great tuning, snow at South. If you will return this things back to the game and improve some details like rain, diversity of road ( handling, bumpy ).

I remember that you promise to us that you will add tyre blowup. After relase ETS2 you didnt mention about this once. Do more for money from DLC!!!

    Best regards

  37. I haven't seen the game yet, and might not for awhile as I have a 32 bit system and no plans to upgrade at the moment. But one thing is sure... ATS certainly attracts just as many mindless Trolls as any other game SCS has ever put out. It ain't rocket science people. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you bought it and you don't like it, don't play it. But stop whining...

  38. Man holy fuck, I have never seen so much complaining in my life. How long did people bitch to SCS saying "Get the game out already, hurry it up." I knew this would happen. Now the developers are pushing to get the game out unfinished just like most of you whiners wanted and yet you still bitch. Then again I guess it takes more than some jelly in your skull to think. I will still support SCS because it is finally another North American truck simulator, Driving Euro trucks that look all the same is getting rather boring to me. I'd rather change it up and drive what I'm familiar with in real life. Half the guys here saying SCS is shit yet they love Rig N Roll. Now you want to talk about a broken game? RNR was a prime example of a revive of King of the Road (Hard Truck 2) that had a updated engine that really wasn't much different from KOTR. Not to mention buggy mechanics. ETS2 and ATS has always looked pretty damn good, and I'm glad they are keeping things optimized rather than jumping on the new engine bandwagon and throwing optimization out the fucking window. Sorry we aren't all spoiled 15 year olds who get mom and dad to blow 1200 on a new computer for them every 3 years. Keep up the work SCS and I look forward to February 3rd to grab my copy.

One of the few people with a brain writing something that I can agree on...
Most of the people in this comment section just don't know what constructive criticism is or they just don't have a clue about making games, trucking or America

    2. Even haters will grab their copy, they're still playing at ETS2 and will play ATS also. When I dislike something, I don't waste my time to complain about it at each blogpost only few minuts after its release and go see something else somewhere else.

    3. Exactly. I think it is amusing how those children "hate" the game so much, but still buy it. So why do they buy it? Not to support the developers. No ... they buy it because mommy and daddy gave them some money and they realized that by buying a game that has a community and forums that this somehow gives them entitlement and power to speak as if they are somehow important.

Fortunately, in about 30 - 40 years, they **may** grow up. Unfortunately, in that area there is definitely no guarantees.

  39. SCS, how about to make an exciting game, and not boring to sleep on go, the second ETS2.
As this is America, a police siren, should pursue offender. More American traffic, as trucks, agricultural machinery on the roads.
American school bus - I don't see the equipment. Traffic in game should play a big role in America!
To buy my own house and manage a staff of drivers.

To understand correctly, people don't want a boring straight edge.
    I don't want to have a second ETS2

    1. I don't think your understanding of America is that great, implementing police that would pursue wouldn't be to hard however if it is implemented I'd say it would be awhile before we would see it. There is apparently quite a bit of truck traffic, and its not all that common to see agricultural machinery on USA roads daily. Especially in the zones of where the map is currently taking place. However atleast the traffic looks more dynamic than ETS2's where every car is either a citroen, benz or bmw.

  42. SCS Software has made it VERY clear why they will not include "crash animations" in this game. Yet, as usual, children refuse to read. They only speak, but they are completely incapable of reading because that requires an education. It is sad that in our modern society, we are growing less and less capable of educating our youth to read, write and take on other basic skills.

Fortunately, those of us who ARE educated and wish to have a driving game and not a car-thief wreck-it game like GTA V have read and understood why truck brands license with games like ETS2. No brands want to see their stuff wrecked and abused by kids on YouTube. It is bad enough that this happens on multiplayer (which, by the way, the creators of the MP server encourage this behavior), so it is a relief that physical animations are not possible even there (even though the MP developers are doing their best to make a mod that makes this possible).

SCS - though 2/3 of the comments here are whining for crash physics, please know that there are plenty of us out here who know and appreciate the need for a driving game that does not constitute or promote irresponsible driving, and we appreciate your decisions to keep "crash animations" out of this game. Thank you.

On subject, now, I think it is awesome with the screenshots. Seeing real life scenes being implemented is a very good step up from the current ETS2 title. I definitely look forward to driving and seeing these locations as I explore the first two states.

Releasing the game state by state is actually a great idea. It gives time to focus more on scale. The one thing about ETS2 that bugs me the most is the fact that there is absolutely no detail differentiating one geographical location from another. All of the cities feel cloned, and the only difference in the landscape is a hill here and there. From what i am seeing of the screenshots for ATS, it looks like using this new method will enable a much better, more detailed approach to this continent. I hope I am seeing those shots right, and that as states get released as DLC we truly do get the feel that we are in that state. If so, then I will definitely be buying every state as DLC. Tread carefully, though, because if everything starts feeling cloned, a lot of people will probably be very unhappy - myself included. Do not give in to peer pressure by impatient children. Do not let this become like ETS2 where everything looks the same. Stick to your guns and do everything step by step - I have the patience to wait for better scenery and I know others do as well :)

    1. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for posting this very realistic and wisely-worded comment in a thread otherwise filled with 60-70% negative-Nancies and just bashing the game and its creators. With PROPER constructive criticism that gives good feedback for the team at SCS Software to consider, as it continues developing ETS2 and ATS, as well as WoT. I'm quite sure SCS will give each state its own characteristic feeling and not make it cloned.

And I totally agree. Many kids posting here (yes, some are adults but still "kids") have the wrong game in mind if all they want is accurate crash physics. But of course, it's like talking to a brick wall - only worse, because they give you a bunch of bunk in return.

Your comment was refreshing though, thanks again for posting it!

  44. Well, looks good. One complaint I have is the weather, every screenshot in the daytime has had an afternoon-sundown shade, where it is bright orange. California experiences constant fog (marine layer), and the sunset is not always bright orange, and the daytime looks pretty much like every other place that has sun, not an orange shade...
