World of Trucks v0.01

World of Trucks start is almost here. After two re-starts, we have finally got the project to a state (alpha state!) that we are eager to show you and to test drive it with you.

To begin with - World of Trucks is not a whole new game. Well not now anyway. Think about it as an evolution of Euro Truck Simulator 2, an extra optional service complementing the game and building on top of the game.

Certain future DLCs and certain features in upcoming game updates will take advantage of the additional World of Trucks layer, in fact some goals we will be pursuing will be tightly connected with World of Trucks, as we expect it to be more and more strategic in the grand scheme of things.

With World of Trucks, we are taking a shortcut building it on and around an existing game. The route should allow us to iterate faster, to deliver features and content more often, at least compared to a building a game from scratch. You may remember that it took us almost three years in case of ETS2 after all! We sure don't want to let you wait so long for some of the cool stuff we are planning.

We will be continually plugging-in new features into the service as they get implemented, so you will be able to witness the progress and if you choose to, become an integral part of its development and evolution. Such approach requires an overhaul and adaptation of our own development processes, which is still an on-going effort (you have been the judges of that while waiting for such a long time for the mid-summer patch). We hope the further it goes into 2014, the better will be be at it.

So, finally, this week the www.worldoftrucks.com portal will start working. Using your ETS2 key (or via provided Steam link), you will be able to register at the website and begin using some new features of ETS2. Let's have a closer look at "v0.01 stage" features:

1. Custom license plates

Using a selection of templates from countries featured in ETS2, you would be able to design your own plate. This new plate, after setting in up on the website, will automagically appear on your truck in the game.

2. Game avatar

You will be able to upload custom image serving as your in-game avatar. This avatar image will also be your representative on the World of Trucks portal.

3. Photomode

We have a new more advanced tool available if you want to grab cool screenshots from the game. You can pan the camera freely in the vicinity of the truck, play with DOF and change FOV. There is a also a management screen to work with your screenshots collection.

4. Publish the best shots using Screenshot Manager on your WoTr profile

Would you like to share your truck design with others, or maybe you want to share a particularly interesting route? Now you will be able to publish up to six screenshots using the built-in Screenshot Manager and share them with the others through your Profile screen.

5. User gallery

The place where your shots are visible for everybody. The other drivers can rate or share the images. The gallery will be accessible for unregistered users as well.

You can see that with the initial set of features, we do not yet attempt to add any gameplay depth. The goal is to start carefully, getting the infrastructure up and running first.

We hope to see you soon in the World of Trucks! It will be a quite a journey, we will be taking it step by step. Stay tuned for more!

    1. If they don't, a lot of people won't want anything to do with WoT.

More importantly, will it be okay with map mods?

      Delete
    2. It's highly unlikely that mods, especially small scale and less well know ones will work in WoT, especially early on. To get them to work they'd need to have a copy of every mod on their server so others can see it and that would require long upload times when joining with a new mod and vast storage space on the part of SCS

In short maybe common, popular mods such as the TSM series may be included but I doubt truck skins online will be available.

Though if SCS could add in an online skin creator then it would be easier to both create mods and use them online - Best of both worlds!

      Delete
    3. mods don't need to work for WoT because it is not a game.

  7. How about adding easier way to add custom paintjobs? I mean something like in for example Carmageddon TDR or Live for speed:) There you just paste for example jpg file with paintjob to correct folder and that's all. Works :>. Name of file is name of paintjob visible in game. This could help us personalize our trucks :)

    1. Ehm... You know you can costumize truck colors ingame right? Well because of that the game doesnt have .jpg files.... And there are some mods that help you skinning.

    2. +1
At least some way to add custom 'stickers' (images) that get pasted in pre-determined places in the cabin and/or sideskirts.

      Delete
    3. Yes I know but there's chance to use jpg files or png and still have alpha channel to be able to change colour in game. LFS has option to change colour (only one, not like in ets2 - more than 1). Anyway I'm thinking more about advanced paintjobs that don't need colour changing in game:)

    2. You think it is a game? It'a not a game! WoTr is a feature to ETS2 that let you share screenshots with your "virtual friends". You CAN'T play WoTr. You can log in and change there your license plate. This change will affect to your truck in ETS2. You can also change your avatar and make a gallery from your screenshots! That's it. WOTR IS NOT A NEED GAME WITH MULTIPLAYER.

      Delete
    3. You seem to have missed some of their information. Yes right now it won't do much in the way of giving anyone multiplayer, but it is being made with the intention to eventually become more multiplayer focused.

If you haven't watched the interview with Pavel Sebor by DaSquirrelsNuts on youtube you need to go watch it. During the 2 hour interview he talks about how WoT is going to start out small and they are going make it bigger with the hope being that it will become much more of a true multiplayer in the future. If you did see the interview already then please go back and watch it again and listen specifically for this part in the interview.

  11. oh my... i was hoping for some kind of asynchronous multiplayer, some extension to the management side, the creation of virtual companies and leaderboards... SCS, you have been very lucky to have so much success with this game, but more time passes more i fear you are really wasting this chance... people won't wait forever for you, by the time you are done with your plans the game will be outdated and forgotten... and overtaken by modders on the mapping side.

  13. The name 'World of Trucks' does that mean this service won't be integrated in Euro Coach Simulator/Bus Driver 2? Or will there be an identical but separate service?

  14. Oh my god lol people are already complaining before the alpha is released haha what a stupid people live in this world.. This is a good start. Well I am not really really interested in sharing photos but I do like the fact they are working on a racenet kinda ish program. WoTr is not only sharing photos and changing license plate... If you really want more just wait. Waiting will provide the best answers on ALL of your questions.

Ofcourse they fucking know we want MP (Well I am not really really interested but okay) But making coding takes time. A lot of time. GTA V took like 4 year with a budget of 250 million (And I geuss a few hundred people working on it) and you guys except from SCS to make in 6 months a whole brand new working MP with the current engine (That is NOT made for MP)

    ReplyDelete

  18. In my opinion, it does not make any sense to make features such as custom licence plates or using a self-provided image as one's game avatar available for players registered at World of Trucks exclusively. Unless you are trying out whether your fans would also be willing to register at a website in order to obtain new offline-features and, if this should be the case, planning to create, bit by bit, an ETS2 (and future projects) forcing us to do so in order to even play it (them) offline (if such a possibility is intended to still exist then). And I sincerely hope that this is not what you have in mind. Otherwise: Good bye congenial SCS!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You need? Or you are not a fan, and a pirate! Then you don't get along with people.

      Delete
    2. If you got the game and its not pirated then you wouldn't be moaning

      Delete
    3. For your information: I am not a "pirate" but have got (bought for more than 20€) a valid product key for ETS2. If that was not the case, I should not even have been able to update my copy of the game to version 1.3.1. But I do neither buy nor play any games forcing me to register at a website or to go online in order to play them and there are several good reasons for my point of view, for instance that a simple server-breakdown can make it impossible to play them, not to mention what could happen if the company maintaining them became bankrupt. By the way: I did not moan as far as I can judge my own comment. I only stated that I will no longer be loyal to SCS Software if they try to force me to register (or even to go online) for playing their games. I did this because I wanted them to know that not everyone is of the opinion that being "thoroughly connected to the web" were the greatest thing to happen to him and that creating a voluntary online service might be a much better solution. But if they do so, why should they add any features which are not directly related to any online-functions for registered players only? I cannot see any reason for that. And this is exactly the first point I mentioned above. Any questions left?

      Delete
    4. At what point up there did they say anything about requiring anyone to register for this. This is only an addition to the existing game. It isn't going to change how you play the game unless you want it to. This is the very beginnings of them setting up the framework to build multiplayer on way down the road. They have said nothing of the sort yet that indicated that they were going to force you to be a part of this new service that will help connect the players and their games together. Please go watch the youtube interview with Pavel by DaSquirrelsNuts. He (the ceo of SCS) discusses their plans for WoT and makes no mention that this will become mandatory to play the game offline

      Delete
    5. Exactly. The game can still be played offline. World of Trucks portal is just addition of online service for people that want to use it. If you do not want any online service its perfectly OK for us and you can play game as before.

      Delete
    6. First of all: I have watched the interview mentioned above and I am convinced that my English is good enough to understand it as well as to express my opinion in a comprehensible way. However, I think the people who have replied to my comment so far did either not want to understand what I wrote (for whatever reason) or are just too imbecile to do so. And I will not waste any more of my time trying to explain it to them (or to anybody else) again. Reread my comment and my first reply if you like. I have written (almost) everything that is to be said about this topic. By the way: Replying negatively (or even in an offensive way) to statements one does not understand is a thing I quite dislike.

      Delete
    7. Well by the way: I didn't reply negatively or in an offensive way. I am about to though since you want to take what I said in such a manner and call me an idiot. I read both what you originally said and your other reply. I never commented on whether or not you were a pirate so that part doesn't apply to me. I asked you where you are getting this information that as soon as they do this you will be forced to register somewhere to play the game offline. Can I conceive that it may happen that they would do that? Yes, but I seriously doubt they would want to because it might alienate part of their fan base which for a niche game like this isn't that big to begin with.

As far as understanding your posts all you have said is that you will no longer support them in they make it into something where you must have an online component for an offline game. I agree that that is a bad thing with games. I will not argue that point with you. What I am arguing with you is that they have not had any mention that this is what it would become. There is no evidence yet that you will be forced into this. And if you took away from what he said in the interview that it would be a requirement then you don't understand English as well as you think because he did not say or imply that it would become necessary.

      Delete
    8. Congratulations! You still seem not to have understood my point of view. To answer your initial question: There was no planned requirement of a World of Trucks account for ETS2 or any of SCS Software's future projects mentioned in the interview. This might also be the reason why I did not refer to it in my comment. I suppose you are not just pretending not to understand what I am actually talking about, but I think explaining it again would not make any sense as I have already tried to. I truly cannot conceive why understanding it is (apparently) so difficult.

      Delete
    9. P.S.: Stating that "[r]eplying negatively (or even in an offensive way) to statements one does not understand [were] a thing I quite dislike" I actually meant to refer to the first two replies to my comment. However, your (Menacing Scarab's) first reply could also be regarded as offending because, taking into consideration that I have been a usually quite well-informed "fan" of SCS Software's for a while, explaining to me what World of Trucks is, supposing that I have not watched DaSquirrelNuts' interview with Pavel Sebor, and then even alluding to the fact that the latter is SCS Software's CEO (!) can easily be taken as implying that I were stupid enough to write a comment concerning a topic I have not read up on at all. Of course you cannot know anything about me, but, vice versa, it is exactly the same situation for me: How shall I know whether, writing your replies, you are trying to insult me because my opinion might differ from yours or whether you want to provide me with information I might have missed (which would be very amiable)? I agree that the term "imbecile" may have been a bit exaggerated, but, to my mind, my comment and my first reply should actually be clear without ambiguity if one really tries to follow my line of argument. Unfortunately I do not really know what else to write in order to make you understand more than only a part of my point of view (while "interpreting claims into my words" that I did never state).

  21. From what I can tell, the features they are including in WoT v0.01 are there mainly to test out the feasability of the system for bigger and better things as well as generatring interest in it.

Like other people, I wouldn't be happy if the features listed were the only ones that were going to be included but it's clear from the version number that this is a very early version and many cool features are going to be included.

I'm looking forward to the new patch as well. Can't wait to get my hands on that new Volvo! :)

The ETS blog is written in English. So, if you comment on a post then you will have read that post, which means you understand English and can reply in English. So, why the h*ll are people replying in other languages? You (plural) don't really expect everyone to understand Polish, Russian et cetera, right? The blog is in English, so reply in English!

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

  69. Well that was a valuable post above wasn't it ... someone eating too much sugar again me thinks ....... Moderators ....to action !!!!! .....anyway .....

I've been able to login and WoT is a cool beginning of greater things to come I hope.

From within ETS2, I've been unable to upload an image as I get an error telling my screen resolution is too high.

Is this something being worked on?
Thanks SCS as ever for the continuing support

And a comment on multiplayer ..... honestly, it works well in plently of other genres which are driving games and trolls and wreckers, whilst definately an issue are not enough of a reason not to do this. Administrated servers that are not open public but are membership access [still free] addresses trolls in the main.
