Scania Truck Driving Simulator

The fact that we are working on another truck sim game in addition to ETS2 was one of the worst kept secrets. It was supposed to be under wraps until the very last moment, but such is the life of the games retail market. The publishing and distribution people need to work with retail chains to position any game in the development pipeline way ahead of release, and so the information and speculative release dates kept leaking left and right.

So what is this game and why does it even exist when you could argue that we should focus 100% on Euro Truck Simulator 2?

The project is the result of a very productive dialogue we have started with the great guys at Scania CV AB. You could have read our grumbling repeatedly here on this blog about how difficult it is for the company our size to even get noticed by the big guys, be them truck and trailer manufacturers or logistics companies. The "serious" industry too often considers games as something controversial and unimportant anyway, and even marketing departments are usually too conservative and concentrated on traditional media to grasp the idea that the thousands and thousand of people playing truck sims are in fact the ideal audience that they could approach through our game.

Fortunately, when we approached Scania about licensing their trucks for our games, this was not the case. In fact we immediately moved on to another stage - discussion on how we could work together on something deeper. And when such an opportunity appears - you just don't want to let it pass. This is a chance for us to learn a lot, and also a chance to get our production recognized in the transportation industry in general. We are in this for the long run (or at least so long as we have enough paying customers), and building industry contacts and experience is crucial for us in our quest to build an ultimate truck simulator combining best of both words - interesting for a gamer as well as a professional driver.

Scania Truck Driving Simulator is only about three times the depth and scope of Truck & Trailers, so still a relatively small game, but the variety of activities available in the game makes it way more balanced product. There are driving-school type of tasks in the game for a warm up. There is a big segment devoted to emulating the hard challenges in Scania's Young European Truck Driver competition (BTW you should really check out what the masters behind the wheel are capable of, just watch a bit of the previous YETD finals). But there is also a lot of fun-to-drive realistic-looking scenarios included, plus a sizable map just for free roaming deliveries. This game is packed with hours and hours of interesting driving for sure. Plus our very first step towards making our games networking-enabled, with the possibility to compete (and see other people's driving performances) over the Internet.

  3. Most welcome secret indeed! I'm sure commentators will start asking when it will be released so let me be the first to ask.

Also, will there be a download shop with EU bank transfer payment option for all SCSSoft truck sim?
I would like to buy them all again, all at once just to add in my support as a paying customer as a big THANK YOU for hours of entertainment you guys provided.

Just be sure to allow EU bank transfer as i do not own and will never own a credit card and dont even want to start paypal or anything like that.

  4. Once I've completed trucks and trailers I'm buying this for sure! Very good work as usual SCS, the graphics look amazing! You are going to make 'the ultimate truck simulator' and it will be called 'Euro Truck Simulator 2'. I never thought you'd make a truck simulation this good!

  5. Very interesting to read!

It's nice to hear that Scania does see the future of media and understands that even tough games may not be the 'normal' way to contact potential customers it definitely could work.

I was pleased to read that you combined the driving-school/driving tests with a small free roam map. For me that was a minor at T&T.
And by overlooking the screens I think the free map looks quite challenging!
Are you going to let us 'explore' more features that we might find in ETS2 like you did in T&T?! :)

  12. Very exciting news! I enjoyed T&T, and like the concept very much. I'll be happy to support the production of ETS2, and getting such a treat in return.

I also like the sound of multiplayer, even if it is in small scale :) .

I'll come with one suggestion / request / wish, for once: Drawbar combos (cargo carrying truck, with a cargo carrying trailer behind, like this one: http://www.nrk.no/contentfile/imagecrop/1.7750921?cropid=f169w650 ). That would be an awesome challenge for these kind of games. They are still very common in Norway, Sweden and Finland, and are also used elsewhere in Europe. And yes, we do reverse them as well :) .

  16. I hope that at least in one of these two new games (STDS and/or ETS2) you will make the traffic cars more intelligent than they were in GTS - obeying signs about major roads and disable them from changing lanes while there's a truck in the lane they want to go. In GTS I was fined many times because of the stupid traffic cars which attempt to change lane while I'm next to those cars, respectively they hit me but at the end the fine is taken from my pocket. I'm driving in my lane as I should and when a traffic car goes under my truck, I'm being fined. I don't know what do you think, but in my opinion is that this is quite unfair.

Come on, I wanna be surprised with their masterpiece -- if there is actually something unrevealed in ETS2. There's hardly another videogame in whole world which is in development and we know so much about it. And now is STDS time, it should be advertised more than ETS2.

  32. YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!! IT IS THE MOST EVER WANTED TRUCK SIM, I THINK!! A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL BE SOO HAPPY WITH IT!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sounds great! While I myself enjoyed T&T, it certainly became monotonous after a couple of hours, so I am happy to hear that besides skill-based challenges, you also include real-life scenarios and a free-roam map as well.

Are you planning a crowdsourced translation this time as well? Let me know if you do, so I can get the Hungarian translators together.

  34. Sounds like a pretty cool game, a game to pass the time until August, at the launch of ETS2, but it is a pity, as I'm still trading for a better pc, it will take some time for me to play this game, but at least know that it is the eve of the grand ETS2.

  42. Skill tasks and driving round cones and parking tests . Thanks i will certainly NOT buy this . I got rid of T&T after a day and this seems another almost exactly the same but with the Scania name instead .
I will wait for ETS2 and hope that is the proper driving simulator it sounds like it is going to be and not a load of twaddle like T&T was

    1. i wonder if the game will be realistic then and those trailers not allowed in the UK as they are banned over here, if they are actually going to be in the game

      Delete
    2. I actually think people are wanting rigids and drawbar trailers more than double trailers like a lot of modders made for ETS/GTS and UKTS

      Delete
    3. Exactly. Dolly trailer is far more realistic than doubles in Europe. Especially in northern Europe, but also further south and east. Also, it would be more common to reverse a dollytrailer than a double combo, as with doubles, you would normally dock one at a time, but with a dolly trailer, you obviously have to dock the whole trailer at once, you can't disconnect the dolly.

      Delete
    4. Why cannot you disconnect the dolly ?

After spending 7 years towing them in real life I often disconnected it on one bay and then backed the lorry onto another to load or unload that at the same time

I was just playing RoR (Rig of Rods) and I had to think about something!
In RoR when you drive a vehicle with low/mid/high ranges you can shift from 1-6 and then press button to be in low/mid/high and continue shifting :) Maybe it could be possibility in your games?!

  57. Wow ScS is taking a risk here . Releasing this in May then expecting everyone to then buy ETS2 in August . If this is buggy or nowhere near as good as people expect it could seriously hamper sales of ETS2 .
Whilst i realise that ScS is only a small company that needs finance it was their decison to keep putting back ETS2 and then do a deal with Scania for a game that could seriously hurt their hopes of having the proper names of the other major truck makers in ETS2 . Knowing how companies think I will now not expect to see the proper names of all the trucks in ETS2 until the modders get to work .

    ReplyDelete
  58. Good work scs. You 'r excellent.

  60. you should make a game were you can start of buying really old scania, volvo, mercades, daf and renault and then you can buy the newer trucks later on in the game and do all the mods like you can in ets 2 now that would be a game to play and i would deffernatly buy this game but good job on all the other games

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are doing it is called ETS 2 . If it is like Ets you will have the option to buy a second hand truck . Or did you mean having the old style models available to buy . Modders will no doubt soon make those for the game
