Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013!

So what are we up to? No doubt many of our fans are very curious about what is coming from SCS Software in 2013. Let me pour some fuel on the bonfire of speculation!

As we hinted in a previous blog post, based on the massive amount of input from our fan base, we are contemplating moving into several areas at once. To understand what it would take to run several projects in parallel - the resources it would take and the amount of work ahead of us, we have split up the company into several mini-teams. Each group is tasked with research, pre-production analysis and tentative planning.

The strategic goal is clear - we don't want to spend two or three years again working on a single big game, having little to offer to our fans until it's finished. Instead, we'll be exploring different ways of doing projects with different business models to be able to give you more stuff to play and more often.

One thing is for sure - we are going to continue adding features and extending Euro Truck Simulator 2. In addition to normal updates, this will most likely include optional paid map-expanding DLC(s). We are already working on one such extension - early next year we are thinking of approaching the public and our fans through www.indiegogo.com, in order to get very important feedback on viability of such game extensions.

For this paragraph, we are moving into areas of what-ifs and maybes. We have purchased (at no small cost) several domains which we think will be important for the projects we are considering for the next year: www.americantrucksimulator.com, www.eurocoachsimulator.com, and www.worldoftrucks.com. We are not ready to reveal features sets or release time-frames, but you now see in the open what we are thinking about.

SCS Software's Forums membership is approaching 400, look like we have a slow start so far. Maybe discussing the opportunities offered by our tentative 2013 plans is a good reason to join in!

Thank you very much for staying loyal to us through the years, let's work together to make the years to come even more exciting!

    1. Actually it does not support SLI out of the box either, you have to create a profile to enable SLI. Maybe there's a similar solution for CF?

    5. Yeah it sounds like a great idea. I hvae always been looking for a coach simulation game which isn't just a bus simulator. it would be great if they develop it well with a career mode and things.

But a bus driving game made by SCS -with ETS 2 graphics and such- doesn't sound horrible.

  29. I for one would like (and buy) an American version built using the ETS2 game engine - ALH was very good in many ways (please bring back buying second-hand trucks, for example) and what let it down was the physics and dynamics, which are much better in ETS2.

paid-for DLC: OK if it's not too pricey and decent amount. I'd not be keen on paying for the rest of France, say, but I'd happily pay 10-20 euro for the whole Iberian peninsula, or for Scandinavia, i.e. a decent size map extension. Looking at what's missing, you could do 3 expansions:
    1) rest of France, Spain, Portugal
    2) rest of Poland and Eastern Europe plus southern Italy
    3) Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland.

I'd pay for each of those, if it wasn't too much each time.

    1. 4)Ireland, Turkey and a few more cities and ferry crossings in already-complete countries. At the moment, the destination menus for the ferries are redundant because there's only one route per port.

The 3rd one requires the most work to be realistic because of the truck handling in snow and ice. That one would need to be a higher price than the others. I would happily pay €15-30/£20-30 for Scandinavia and €10-20/£15-25 for the others.

  34. Merry christmas. Well first of all, why " Each group is tasked with research, production analysis" ?? Ok but research!? maybe time to ask someone right here if they have any experians about trucking. Maybe you dont have to spend weeks to "research" if you have an solution right here on your site! Try ask people who have years of driving trucks like my self then maybe we can help you of no charge to make it even better. Sorry for my bad typing. Regards from Sweden.

  35. About dicussing opportunities on message boards... you know, it would be great, but it would also need new subforum, now we can discuss ETS2, STDS and older games and I believe none of us wants to make a mess in forums. Could some moderator/admin create new subforums for discussing these plans?

By the way - what about some wiki in future? It could serve as knowledge base. Those who are experienced with driving trucks, buses, knows how things going in various countries or are experienced in logistics would surely like to share their knowledge and help with research. Aside from that, wiki could also serve as knowledge base for those who wants to create modifications, maps and stuff like that.

  44. I will not buy any DLC's. It is not that I do not like the game, with the G27 it now feels like a truck simulator, but the main reason I will not buy any DLC's is I am not sure how much longer I will actually play the simulator, due to the poor performance. Even if frame rates are 40 fps it looks like they are much lower. In some places I am getting 75 fps and it is still not smooth, then when I get to a city my fps can go down to as low as 30 fps and it feels really laggy. For my fps test I used no mods, so using third party mods is not the problem.

Performance on ETS/GTS/UKTS was also a problem, and I can not see this being altered while the Prism3D game engine is used.

It is a pity you (SCS) are so intent on using this engine and will not look at better ones, as I like the sounds of American Truck Simulator. I was even hoping that maybe one day you would do an Australian version with road trains. But since it looks like the Prism3D game engine is here to stay, ETS2 will be my last purchase.

I wish everybody at SCS a great Christmas and a Happy New year, and wish you well with any new project.

    1. Have to say - I'd agree 100% before I got a (much) better video card (although still not actually top of the current range, this one is from 2010 I think). There are still the odd few issues with glitches in video, but in general it's pretty good.

Having said that, I think the current game looks about as far as that game engine will go, so I think you're right about looking at others for the future. I don't know what (say) world of tanks is built on, that works pretty well IME.

I'd still by something that was the equivalent of ALH2 though...

      Delete
  45. Well, I'd rather wait a little longer for a better game than not waiting long for a crappy game.
Great example is Extreme Trucker... Darn that was a bad game... It was probably the worst of the 18 WOS series.

But if you are sure you're able to make a great game in a very short time I can only say: go for it SCS and good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  46. You should add links to your new forum on the ETS 2 homepage, that way more people will know it's available. Maybe a link on the SCS homepage too?

WorldofTrucks sounds interesting. Will it be similar to DCS:world (flight sim series) where each addon/extension will be in the form of 'modules' and you can add them into a basic client? I'm guessing you're also considering multiplayer? Singleplayer only is fine by me but I know many would prefer both.

  47. As a Canadian, while I have enjoyed Euro Truck Simulator, little could make me more excited than a North American version that's at the same quality level as ETS2. Don't forget about Canada when doing the US. While our landmass is much larger, the actual amount of content that would apply to a truck simulator is a fraction of the size of the US. It would be pretty much a single east-west highway covering all the provinces. Montreal has the potential to make for some real nice visuals, since that city is an island on a river.

    1. As a European I always think about snow and beer drinking polar bears when I hear Canada.
What I mean with that is that Canada would be great, if SCS could make an awesome snow-typ weather.

Though the USA probably has some more variation in weather and terrain.
Think about sunny California and cold Vermont.

North-America would be great, but a bit too large I guess...

    2. Great thing of USA and Canada the road signs most of them are similar exception of freeway exit signs, speed signs, and Quebec is really the big difference. American truck sim speeds are higher 60 mph or 100km or higher. Can work 12 hours max instead of EU 10 hours.

Other good thing might be selling DLC on CD/DVD in shops where ETS2 is available to buy. Of course DLC must be enough big:)
Atari did this with DLC for Test Drive Unlimited.

About ideas for extensions, you should take a look at other games with trucks. In King of the road / Hard Truck 2 there are also small vans or canvas trucks etc. So adding playable cars like Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily, Ford Transit might be cool:)

Do eurocoachsimulator the next game, because it will take you much less time than americatrucksimulator because it simply:
-do models get coaches and licenses (licenses you already Scania, Man that is a Neoplan, Volvo, in ats all licenses of new)
-add Spain, zoom: Poland, Italy and France to map ETS2
-convert Germany (new junction, roundabout, goals, level crossings, etc.)
-convert the city so that we can let down the people to the Coliseum, Eiffel Tower, famous hotels, etc.
    -add four seasons
    -improved graphics and better optimize
    -add hands on the wheel
-do animation as people enter and exit the bus and sit down, give your luggage in the trunk
-tuning-changing dashboard, upholstery, curtains, the skin on the coach, the opportunity to write the name of the coach
-setting up a business or buy, garages, coaches, employment drivers
TIME TO HIT THE SCS OTHER USERS GROUP. SIMULATION TRUCK SOME ALREADY BORED.
At ATS we will have to build the entire MAP AGAIN. TAKE A LOT OF TIME TO YOU.
    SCS IN TIME EUROCOACHSIMULATOR!

    1. Yep agree with this!
SCS Would do Great with a Bus Sim and also you almost have all Your Licenses.

      Delete
    2. I don't think SCS is allowed to make Volvo, Scania, etc buses because they have the licenses for their TRUCKS, I doubt it that they're allowed to make Volvo AI cars in ETS2 either.

And I wouldn't like hands... Remember that SCS makes SIMULATORS, not arcade racing games.
The game is called Euro TRUCK Simulator, not Euro Trucker simulator (what I mean with that is that its about driving a truck, not being a trucker, if it was about being a trucker, you should have some weird Sims mode, which luckily the game doesn't have)

      Delete
    3. Yeah, they are sure allowed to use brands only on certain models, not on everything they want. Of course, why not to try negotiations about buses too. I believe relationship between SCS and SCANIA is warm, and others could also listen, remember MAN was the first who allowed to use brand. But it will take a time again.

Also it does not make much sense to me to use ETS2 map, even radically improved. First, most of people would tell "Why I should pay for the same game twice, if it would be bus DLC for ETS2 then okay, but this?". Second, map is not so suitable for a bus game. It could serve only for intercity/international lines, and that would be boring after while (especially for those who already memorized ETS2 map). It should be more like Bus Driver map. A historical town in center (take tourists there, as is usual in European cities), business, residental and factory quarters (common bus lines for citizens), maybe harbour, suburb areas/villages around the city, of course the airport... Maybe several maps: one or two continental cities and one UK city (for LHT, as SCS is one of few gaming companies which is aware of fans from LHT countries). Then, if the game will be succesful, other maps can also come as DLC.

Of course, this model is not suitable for intercity lines, on the other hand. But I think intercity lines wouldn't be so enjoyable. And even if the game should be based on European (ETS2) map, something more should be added, like running company, this time much more extensive: be better than competitors (offer better/cheaper services, faster lines, comfortable buses), making deals with city authorities, just deep simulation of coach company management.

So from any point of view, if they want Euro Coach Simulator to be great standalone game, lots of work must be done. I would say we can expect it no sooner than on next Christmas. But of course, there is always possibility to make it as ETS2 bus DLC, without being great.

The reason should know where the roads are and it makes more challenging. In some cities and states photo radar illegal just have highway patrol and RCMP mounties or airplane patrol. Second, include Canada and Alaska have weather system and seasons in it. Third, have different companies setups and distribution systems. Finally, include realistic landmarks like Las Vegas strip, grand canyon, glen canyon dam, hoover dam. Make geography more realistic, there is no forests southern Canada or North Dakota its telephone poles.

    1. It would be nice, but GPS must be here, I'm afraid. Their games must be casual-friendly. (But you can always hide Route Advisor in ETS2, anyway - so no deal for those who wants more challenges. I think it'll be the same in next games.)

  68. As far as expansion of ETS2 is concerned, I would exceptionally love if northern part of Europe, Baltic countries, Belarus and a part of Russia were added. Since you already modelled toll plazas on French motorways - with queues! - it won't be a problem to model those border control / customs posts.

    1. I always wonder why people wants to add Spain or Scandinavia or Balcan or, in your case, Baltic countries in first expansion. (Not to mention Turkey.) First expansion (or even first two expansions) must extend central Europe. Because right now there is no way how to connect parts of Europe you guys want with existing map. And I'm not saying these parts of Europe shouldn't be in the game. They should be there for sure. But later; developers must extend map continuously.

    2. Because driving the roads in Scandinavia is vastly different from those in Eastern Europe. Besides which, the scenery is much more breathtaking.

And the problem with all trailers.

    Thank you ...

it is true that the addition of mercedes actros MPIV would really welcome but I think there are other priority, Especially in ETS2.

    2. Do you even know what EA makes? I doubt it.

We've had plenty of EU games now, SCS would be smarter if they did something new again, because they've only made ETS, GTS, UKTS, ETS2 in the past six (?) years, which were all focused on EU.
(exept Extreme trucker, but that was probably the worst of all SCS games)

    3. EA??? I think we have winner of Joke of the Year 2012. :-D
Yeah, they really would care... :-D

Btw, I love ETS2, but I think it's finally time to return back on American highways. Hopefully it'll be in PTTM style with modern graphics and possibilities.

    4. God, it was just an example. What a moment to hear what kind of Americans are great, all are the best and what? They can not do truck simulator?
Of course I understand that it's a great market for SCS, but I at 100% do not buy this game if they arise. Coach Simulator is a great idea.

      Delete
    5. I'm afriad you don't understand. It's not like EA or other company can't do a truck simulation. They can, but they don't care. It's still so small market for these companies. They don't care about 100,000 sold copies.

What i do not understand, on the other hand, is why you wouldn't buy American Truck Sim. Do you remember SCS's series 18 Wheels of Steel, games with american trucks? They are older, some would say outdated, but if we forget graphics, they are still enjoyable and funny. Especially Across America, Pedal to the Metal (my favourite) and Haulin'/American Long Haul.

So - I don't understand. Would you buy American TS from other company? Or you wouldn't buy it, whoever would make it?

      Delete
    6. No. I don't like America ;)

  80. Add Denmark, Norway & Sweden up north. IE Scandinavia in the first DLC. Yes it's possible since the map now extend to the north of Germany, for those who thinks it's not. (Anonymous December 27, 2012 5:12 PM)

Then i will probably buy it.

    1. Oh yeah, made this and that and then I'll PROBABLY buy it. :-DDD You're great customer, let me tell you. :-D

  81. 18 Wheels of Steel American Long Haul 2 or 18 Wheels of Steel Haulin 3 would be a better title than American Truck Simulator. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 18 Wheel of Steel is trademark owned by THQ/Valusoft. SCS made these games, but is not their owner. So there must be some other title and naming it American Truck Simulator is the most logical solution.

  82. Hello,

I really love ETS2 ans STDS. Since I drive into ETS2 I don't use STDS anymore.
I would suggest, if possible, to create a little program to merge the huge fictionnal city from STDS into ETS2 (a program who look if both ETS2 and STDS are installed). You could rename it as fictionnal city and add a few delivery places.
It would be also nice to add the Scania Driving Center if you plan to add Sweeden (or ad it inanother country?).

    Thanks for all the job.
    Happy New Year !

  87. Have you considered using WMD Portal for raising production funds and engaging the community during the development process (testing, feedback, ideas, etc)?

I'd be interested in USA Truck Sim and new maps for ETS2. DLC pricing would have to be reasonably cheap considering there are some map mods already available for free. To be honest I'd rather have one game with all locations (Europe/USA) built in.
