Scania TDS on Mac App Store

It has taken us almost half a year to port our current engine technology to Mac OS, but finally this weekend we have managed to get Scania Truck Driving Simulator released on Mac App Store. It's an important milestone for us on the way to port its bigger brother Euro Truck Simulator 2 to the platform as well. Hopefully this time we won't need half a year again, but there is still a ton of work to do on the port, so it's hard to come up with an estimate yet. And everybody knows how imprecise we can be on such estimates.

We are happy with the results so far, here is an analysis of best selling charts across various countries for the game as available on APPlyzer:

Speaking about failing with time estimates, we are tempted to claim that the Linux version of ETS2 is now less than two weeks away from being ready for release. Didn't we say it was two weeks away from release several months ago already? We are bad at estimates indeed, and we shouldn't give in to temptation yet again. But after overcoming some unexpected difficulties with input controllers code, we are feeling reasonably well about this new estimate.

Changing topic, GamaSutra published an interesting article titled Who's buying all these niche simulation games, anyway? We found out. It's a peek behind the scenes of niche simulators, not just truck sims but also farming and more. The story got picked up by Reddit, too, if you are interested in following this discussion.

    2. Please, get the lag issue sorted. I always dread night time in the game, mainly because of the vehicle and road lights slowing down the computer.

    3. myne doesnt lag so upgrade your computer LOL

what do you want SCS to do about your computer...=))

    4. Here is my pc and every driver for it up to date! And it still does lag! Also i'm not hating SCS here. I just want to let them know about the issues. And I also see my friends and forums has issues like me but from different causes. I don't know to much technicality of game developing things but I asked, I searched, they said this game engine needs better optimization. But SCS looks like doesn't doing that. There is always good features with every game coming up. But game still does lag from various reasons somehow. There is lots of game engines but SCS wants use their own engines. I respect that. I'm not a kid also, i'm not laughing to everything shit i see like you. I want to learn why and help others guys like me and help SCS team by giving and sharing problems.

    1. they made them at the same time. why does everyone here think that SCS only does one project at the same time?

    2. Doesnt matter anyway since they been workin on the linux version more than the mac one. And they are a small team like what 5 people at the most? So they cant do them at once so thy should do the mac verison first.

    3. No the shouldnt. Perhaps they laugh at your Apple like i do?

    4. Mac and Linux are fairly similar, hence why they are doing them both at the same time.

      Delete
    5. Similar yes. Not in terms of software diversity. And, there is a much bigger base of Mac users than Linux. It's a no brainer.

    6. Ddyracer, let me just point you to this article summarizing steams February software suvery, including Mac vs Linux.

      http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTMyOTc

Linux users are, as of February's stats, only about 1% behind Mac. Plus the Linux steam client has been out only a fraction of the time the mac client (Just shy of 3 years for the mac client and only at ~3.25%).

The number of Linux users is also rapidly rising as more games are added, so based on the current trend the Linux market is the better one. While I don't have stats on just Mac users vs Linux users, the trends are telling me there aren't going to be more Mac than Linux gamers for long.

  10. I woke up this morning and looked at the blog and heard about Scania truck driving simulator released for mac app store and ets2 in progress you made my day and week scs are awesome im buying it today.

  11. Nah cmon. LIIIINNNUUUXXX? Are you retarded? Other studios develop complete new games while you pretend making a linux port!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ah, finally some news about the Linux port! I can't wait to run ETS2 native on Linux.

Also, considering that you are not trusting the DLCs success on ETS2, you should consider making a campaign on a site like indiegogo to raise money to make them, like these guys were able to do:

  13. Why all the hatred towards Linux and Mac OS X ? I'm glad SCS is working on those OS too. I hope one day i'll get to play all my games under Linux. Keep it up SCS, i love ETS2 :)

  14. I know this isn't the place for this, but I don't know where else to turn. I recently purchased a download version of this game for Windows and when trying to run patch 1.5 it says that it can't find the game on my system. Anyone else run into this problem?

    1. 1. Are you sure you've got a legit version you naughty, naughty boy?
      2. Just re-install the game and patch it again.

      Delete
    2. Yes, it is legit. And I already tried reinstalling. I've read somewhere that it might have to do with me not having a cd-rom as it tries to patch it using that path. But what do I know :(

      Delete
    3. patch 1.5 is for Scania Truck Driving Simulator

You should use Euro Truck Simulation 2 1.3.1

      Delete
    4. I know which game the patch is for. I already have ETS2 1.3.1

      Delete
    5. Nvm. I found a solution.
In order for to update my LEGAL copy of STDS, I had to resort to illegal activities (Nice work SCS) by downloading a cracked version of the patch.

  15. That's nice news, but you can't use a wheel for Scania TDS running in OSX, right?

  16. "Simulating driving a real truck with all it takes would make our game unplayable for non-truckers, so we need to remember the balance between simulation depth and accessibility" Pavel Sebor
If that's your attitude you shouldn't be making Simulators your games should be like named like bus Driver Euro Truck Driver 2 it works. Anyway seriously your "games" are good and quite of accurate with realism mods (as far as I know, I have never driven a truck) anyway I am frequent follower of this blog and enjoy your "games" but you should strive towards 100% accuracy at least as an option!

    1. You're right. SCS could make possible the choice between ARCADE and SIMULATION, like many games do. That way, hardcore virtual truckers as well as gamers/children would be fully satisfied. :)

  17. I think I found a bug in ETS2; Everytime I drive over a viaduct the mirrors of the truck become very dark and when you drive off it's light again. So maybe you could fix this.

  18. SCS I am very happy with what you told us about STDS being released for MAC and ETS2 not to long down the road so do you think German Truck, UK Truck

I can only afford the demo right now, But this will be in my collection. Thank you for making my life and the life of gamers all over the world just alittle better.
