Public Linux Beta of Euro Truck Simulator 2

After a few days of limited-group closed beta testing, today we are making the Linux Beta build of ETS2 accessible to general public, exclusively through Steam. This is not a free beta, you can only access it if you have already purchased/activated the full version of the game on Steam.

To test the Linux version of ETS2 you need to do following:
1) Install the game from Steam client. This will install the non-beta version which does not have Linux executables.
2) In the Steam client open the ETS2 properties screen and navigate to the "Betas" tab.
3) Select the linux_testing beta.
4) This will install the Linux binaries.

To provide feedback, please go to http://forum.scssoft.com and participate in the Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Linux Beta Testing discussion group.

The game works reasonably well on native NVidia drivers. There are some reports of flickering artifacts on ATI drivers. Older MESA versions are a problem, freshest MESA looks promising still with some serious artifacts, though.

We'll be happy to provide access to the beta to media for a preview, though there are still some elements in the Linux version that need ironing out.

  2. Could you put news on the patch or DLC?, Have been almost a month without giving us news, we all have great enthusiasm for the patches and expansions of the map, but do not want to wait years to play the new map. We like his game and we want to extend it, but if we leave aside that maybe people are disappointed and do not want to buy their future games and updates. If people do not have enough to make 3 or 4 games at once, focus on one or two and just let the other for later, or no news lately about the ETS 2, or on the ECS or on ATS. The pacienia is lost, long time no news. Do not want to wait years to see new game content. Thanks for your work. A big fan of their simulators that have purchased several games and SCS will continue to purchase content, but please do not make us wait so the faithful.

    1. "almost a month without giving us news"
Yeah... Month is not a long time. I'm sure they will announce stuff, when there's something to announce. Remember, that not many game developers give news/patches even this often. I think that SCS is doing brilliant job.

    2. Someone should look up the word "Blog"... a month without update, are a disgrace to all players.. And specially then they for almost 2 (!) months, said new patch almost ready!
But well, its SCS.. so no suprise!

Cheap parts ? ahaha. Just run fraps in game or msi afterburner and show me u huge fps in cities or in game...

    8. I had a core 2 duo system with a GTX 670, didn't get much above 30FPS on average settings. Bought an I7-920 and it never drops below 50 in cities with almost everything maxxed. i7 is clocked to 4.2GHz.

      Delete
    9. All that proves to me is you have a GTX680. It doesnt tell me what other parts are in your computer so for all I know is the rest of your computer is built from cheap parts. Also show me where I said I have HUGE!! FPS in cities?

Smooth as silk, so i guess u have 60 fps or more, because lower is not smooth.

    12. Hunter7370April 16, 2013 at 4:36 PM: Smooth is 24FPS/second. I bet that you will not recognize difference between 24/30/50/60/120 without shown FPS on monitor. If yes, you are not human =) Btw, what is your computer configuration?

      Delete
    13. MTCougar: No, 24 fps is not smooth. 24 fps is just about bearable, which is why it was chosen as the standard for film: It's fast enough to give the illusion of movement yet slow enough to not make camera equipment too expensive. 24 fps was not chosen because it's "perfect".

    14. Will you two quit complaining! My PC has a Intel "HD" Graphics card and at most I get about 15 fps in the cabin view and the game is at 50% scaling. So I wish I could get at least 30fps. BTW, does anyone know if it's worth buying an Alienware X51, because I'm thinking of buying the $800 version with a GTX 645 graphics card???

      Delete
    15. No its not worth buying an alienware computer. You can build your own computer for less.

LOL I knew Hunter was nothing but a load of noise.

I don't use Linux but I'm getting sick of this sorts of comments. Some people don't chose Linux or mac or whatever but need to have it for work or school. And windows is better because all the software is for windows, what if all the software was made for Linux and none for Windows...

  19. Before starting to scolder you, I must say thank you for making an amazing game and for porting it to Linux.
Now, please remove the 'public' from title because it's not public at all. It's only on Steam, Steam doesn't work on my distribution (Ubuntu 10.10), only on newer Unity crap Ubuntus and others, and only for people who already bought the game.
So, no stand-alone client and no demo means it's not public.
Also, I think I will never buy this game since you continue with your strategy to use DRM, maybe that's why you like Steam so much. Even if you make a stand-alone client I think you will still implement DRM (for people who don't know, Digital Right Management).
Good job SCS, we helped you get into Steam and now you treat us with Steam only and DRM (both Steam and inside game client).

    3. 10.10 hasn't received any security updates for more than a year now, you should really look into upgrading to 12.04. Use MATE desktop to make it work like 10.10.

      Delete
    4. Oh, you don't use Steam but want credit for helping them get there. Yeah. By the way xUbuntu 12.04 is alright, xfce is relatively lightweight, give it a try.

      Delete
    5. @Anonymous April 16, 7:13, I don't think I got it wrong, the game client is actively searching your key in their database, at least if you're using the online radio feature, I mean, they're sending information without my knowledge. Also, using exclusively Steam (a light DRM in my oppinion).
@Anonymous April 16, 9:07, a friend of mine also recommneded MATE when I told him I really like Gnome 2 and don't wanna move, so thank you both, I will try it soon.
@Anonymous April 17, 1:45, I use Steam on Windows and I voted them on Greenlight also share it on facebook. I heard many good things about xfce, I think I'm gonna try that too, thank you.

      Delete
    6. Not sure if I would go with XFCE, it actually performs rather poorly for gaming. I would recommend using LXDE. It's actually funny, since Unity is one of the fastest performers. I would like to see updated stats with 13.04 though. Unity was a bit slower with 12.10, but Unity in 13.04 is blazzingly fast. Best release since 10.10 IMO.

To back up my claim, here are some benchmarks using 12.04: http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.ca/2013/02/comparison-of-linux-desktops-opengl.html

I`m GNU/Linux administrator and user. Very glad, that my favorite game will be fully ported for Linux.

    Thanks a lot!

  23. Thanks for porting the game to Linux. It works perfectly well for me (Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, GTX460) outside of fullscreen due to dual monitor setup. Luckily, playing in a window doesn't make this great game worse ;), but I still hope you can find some time to get that right. I know dual head on Linux can be a PITA from the programming standpoint...

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

  24. The virtual world is loaded about 4 minutes .. Slows the game is just awful. I thought that at the minimum graphics settings to get the train, but could not even budge, 1-2fps in a minute ..

My hardware on which the game works fine in windows:
    CPU: Core 2 duo 2.4ghz 4x.
    RAM: 4GB.
    Video card: nvidia GeForce 9500GT.

  32. One day I just might check this blog and something of use might be displayed. Like a new patch or information on a DLC. Come on guys there are many things that need to be improved, like adding new trucks, trailers. Improvement on cargo so you no longer have to leave your trailer at the delivery point. Optimization of the graphics, so you do not need a NASA super computer to run the game at decent settings. But instead of doing this you prefer to muck about with Linux. Sorry guys but you have your priorities all wrong.

I look forward to seeing something which maybe be of interest soon, but I will not hold my breath, since I would properly bust before anything of interest will be written here.

  33. Hi guys, I want to ask you to make Euro Coach Simulator with Missions, that may give the simulation more realism, more or less like Bus Driver, but with more challenging missions and special sittuations. That wil make the sim a No-Boring one! Make a mix between Euro Truck (countinous boring experience) and Bus Driver (only missions) to make an infinite long game but with some exiting missions inside your every day work in game!! Also will be fine to drive in a city picking passangers and leaving them in the destiny of their will. Also :) will be great to drive some articulated buses of 2 or 3 vagons in a realistic city with different stations inside the city. What do you think about use real voices in the game (like FSX)? I'm sure that you guys are able to join all these things and made a great and incredibly succesfull game, better for much than Euro Truck 2.

You can make of Euro Coach a really exiting, REAL LiFE and realistic game!! Thanks for your hard work! I wil buy Euro Coach just when it come to market. And will share the news with my friends if it convinces me ;) sorry for my English, regards from Bogotá, Colombia!

    1. OSX is essentially BSD with a microkernel and a different display server. In other words, it's fairly close to Linux. I know nothing of SCS's plans, but they could potentially release a port in a very short time. I would assume if they do, it would be after the Linux port is final and public, and after they release their round 1 of DLC.

  36. Is this a native version? I am asking this because I am running the game under linux since it came out. It runs very well on my 3-year old laptop (core2duo / nvidia graphics) using Wine. So if this version doesn't use Wine it should be even better.
