Hosted Blog Post - Impressions from the DLC

The following is a direct transcript of text written by a long-term fan and supporter of our games, currently helping us with beta testing of the Going East! add-on for ETS2:

SCS Software decided to invite only a few chosen people to start playing and testing their upcoming project – DLC for ETS2. I have a big pleasure to be among them. It is so important for me, because most of added terrain in the DLC is terrain of Poland – the country when I live.

If you are not from Poland, you must know that Polish roads are really specific. Most of main roads are tight, narrow and going through hundreds of towns and cities. What is more, the condition of them is rather bad. On the other hand, many of them are now under renovation or reconstruction.

The producers of DLC had such a difficult job to do. They had to show Polish road network as much worse than in the Western Europe, but on the other hand as one which is under intensive reconstruction. What is more, Polish fanbase had big expectations connected with Going East DLC. We all know that is impossible to build every bigger city (Poland has 16 voivodeships, 11 of them would be included in game, as cities with landmarks and cargos), add hundreds of towns, thousands of kilometeres of ratty roads.

I think that SCS had done such a good job. Much better than me and most of Polish fans were expecting. Many people were thinking that SCS would make roads in Poland as boring, straight, wide motorways, without any climate. They were mistaken. Admittedly, they haven't included furrows in Polish roads, but they made them as they should look: tight, narrow, and full of roadcrosses. You can do deliveries in only 11 of 16 capitals of voivodeships, but on the other hand you are allowed to go through few smaller cities and towns. The map is also full of landmarks and beautiful places. I was shocked when I saw the characteristic railway bridge near Lublin – city where I come from. I don't want to leak everything about map, so I will just add, that you must explore Masurian Lakeland.

Don't be surprised when comfortable, wide motorway suddenly ends, and you will be forced to leave it and continue your journey going through switchback road.

The map is now under the beta tests. As one of testers, I must tell that it has less bugs than I expected. I hope that we will not find too many bugs and it would be released by local publishers as expected – in September 2013. The map is little bit unequal. It has its better and worse parts. I hope that we, as beta testers, will help SCS to equalize and polish it.

  1. looks ok. But its still not going to make the game less boring, Its gameplay / Company things that should be priority, not map extension.

    3. Yes, the map is alredy big enough. Scania was the most popular truck under the voting so make Scania Streamline :)

    5. Yes! The game performance is very poor, even in powerful computers. I smoothly run games with beautiful graphics while ETS2 runs at low FPS.

    6. Have you tried increasing your PC's virtual memory? Try this > Right click "My Computer" icon in start menu. > Properties > Advanced Tab > Performance "Settings..." > Advanced Tab again > Virtual Memory "Change..." >
Uncheck "Automaticly manage paging file size..."
Select Drive OS is installed (running on)
Select Custom Size: Change to Recommended value under "Total paging file size for all drives"
Restart PC and run game in Administrator Mode.
Also try toggling Vsync because it restricts the frame rate of your GPU to the maximum refresh rate of your monitor. So if you have an old monitor you may be able to get better frame rate.
      Just a few ideas.

    7. Why do this if you already have 24gb of RAM??

O and defo don't do this if you are running a solid state drive!!!

    8. I completely agree about the boringness. Here's some insights related to this:

While playing you only have a landscape to watch. Nothing more... Reminding that the maps are very similar. There's no action at all that could improve the immersion. There's no accidents, or any kind of events, no police, ambulance or firefighters acting, no animals crossing the road or walking around and no dirty roads to take as an way out... Nothing changes, nothing happens. If there were events, they could be informed by radio, for example.

Everything is quite static and robotic. As it stands, Euro Truck Simulator is a good solution for insomnia.

    9. You guys must have pretty poor computers. My PC is 5 years old. I have an INTEL Quad core socket 775 (OLD!) with 6 GB Kingston hyperX ram and a GeForce 560GTX. And my computer runs the game smooth at full graphics and 100%. I cant go to full graphics (400%) but it´s enough for me! Its clear to me that a lot of you don't know how a computer works. Its not always about RAM but your GRAPHIC card! But I guess that someday you will learn this.

      Now back to topic:

I agree that we could use more "life" as mentioned by David.. The AI is just plain stupid. They stop completely before driving onto to the freeway, just to drive out in front of other cars. SCS should make the AI change lane when they approach a freeway ramp.

I would also like to see that you had to leave your truck to manually connect the cables from the trailer to the truck and maybe unloading the trailer with a fork truck!

As of now, the AI drives like in the videos I see from Russia...

I just installed the Scandinavian mod, which is bigger and more detailed than the looks of the new DLC (Still gonna buy it) and its FREE! SCS: You have done a nice work, no doubt, but you guys need to evolve the game in a new direction other than map upgrades. There is so much potential in this!

      Have a nice day!

    10. The problem is that Lord only knows what these people have running or what they have done to their PCs. I work on them for a living and you wouldn't believe what some people are doing to them and how crappy they build them. Game works fine for me and I record with fraps the whole time for YouTube. I run a GTX580 with all settings in ultra and 1920x1080 and fraps recording the same.

That is exactly what I mean, mate! I also do this for a living and see that people with far superior machines have problems running this. I bet their registry is filled with garbage and their whole computer is infected with spyware and adware... Whats the point of having a supercar if you don't know how to drive it lol

    12. maybe some people dont know that in graphis settings you should not set graphis quality at more than 125% if you dont have very powerfull graphic card. I played at 125% and also at 100% with aa settings. In both cases game runs good only when raining and I am in cities with trafic then fps drops a little bit. I tried to set more than 125% and game starts to drop fps like crazy.

  2. SCS you are from Czech republic and even you do not know trailer company PANAV, you do not know how roads in CZE look like and even you are doing some DLC for poland fans. Players do not want other map, because it will be another same part of existing map and existing cities. Players want real roads with some holes, better trailer models and truck models, etc.

    1. I agree, expanding wasn't a great ideo IMO, especially not Eastern-Europe.
I hope they'll improve the existing parts next, instead of glueing another part to the map.
I hope they improve the gameplay and the existing game features next.

Right now ETS2 is like a very old car with a broken engine, beat-up suspension, but with new body panels...
A boring, badly made existing map, with a -as SCS says- new shiny absolutly awesome new part of the map... It doesn't make a lot of sense.

      Delete
    2. Not Eastern Europe?? Cause?? Let me think... maybe you're from western or other continent?? Just read what they wrote. Many copies they sell in Poland.

      Delete
    3. Did you even read the rest of my comment?

The rest of Europe is a big pile of shit and it'll only look worse if they're glueing something -as SCS says, absolutly f*cking amazing, you'll cry of joy- on the existing map.

And besides that, you are probably from Eastern-Europe and are very patriotic. That patriotism is wrong, Eastern-Europe is crap (thank the Soviets for that).

      Delete
    4. At first - Poland is NOT in eastern Europe. The fact that we were a part of Warsaw Pact doesn't mean we live in eastern part of Europe ! Poland is in central (sometimes media say central-eastern) Europe, and that's the fact, deal with it. I agree with your opinion, that SCS should improve the quality, not only the quantity, of playing ETS 2. More brands of trucks, better roads, bigger cities and so one should be the priority. I hope that SCS staff will read this, and i hope they will what they're expected to do. And, i have to admit, that I'm really proud that my lovely country is now more available to explore. Anyway, SCS, good work, and now you know what to do.

    5. PS. Hey, people ! Don't be so mean. Driving simulators are on the beginning of its career. You got a lot of shooting games, 'cos they're improved for years ! Maybe, I hope, the ETS 5 (? :D) will be good as hell. For the begginning it's fucking awesome.

WE'RE DISCUSSING ABOUT A GODDAMNED GAME SO I DO NOT SEE ANY NECESSITY OF BEING SO RUDE WITH EACH OTHER! I quote "STEAL OUR JOBS" are you serious?! IN THE 21st CENTURY THERE'S ALREADY A LOT OF VIOLENCE AND RACISM IN THE WORLD...so please, STOP SHOOTING SHIT, THINK TWICE ON WHAT YOU'RE GONNA WRITE/SAY, BE MORE RESPECTFUL AND TRY TO CARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE SENSITIVITY OF OTHERS! I tried to be kind but reading such a shit gets me furious! You can insult me as much as you want, I don't care about it, but "sooner or later it all comes back to the sender"

I am also a beta tester for SCS, and I have to agree with most of what Piotrek has said in the comments above, the roads in the new DLC beta are alot more of a challenge that the rest of the map which makes it a lot more fun and a bigger challenge to drive and of course less boring than the standard motorway driving

    4. actually i can read properly, even the roads in extreme trucker 2 were said to be a challenge but they weren't. So not matter what you call them, SCS's game engine will let it down because it can't create real challenging roads. The 2 photos provided just show normal roads but 1 with a different stone texture on it, nothing challenging there.

    6. I don't get why it takes so long either.
The only proper reason for the encredibly slow development of the new Volvo model would be license problems.
There's just no way that a professional team needs so much time to make one truck model.

  9. price will tell everything. Will it be competition to free TSM or Europe building? They need to be smart over price/given.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe the price is looking to be around the €10 mark.

But I will always favour official DLC over map mods. I recently downloaded one where there were some really basic errors and it just left me thinking "what else did they miss that wasn't so small".

I do wish SCS would consider including some ideas from mods, like the company complexes and things. But in the end DLC is preferable to me.

      Delete
    2. Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with TSM, it was just big for the sake of being big, with very little time spent on a lot of it. Their was far too many parts that looked identical, with pointless roads, screwed up hills, that looked like little slopes but even a volvo fh16 750, and Scania R730 could barely climb, with a light load. Not to mention, horribly res textures, and far too much use of background mountains and scenary in the foreground, which you could drive through. because it has no collision detection Parts of it were nicely made, such as Greece, and parts of north Africa, but other parts were half arsed, and there just so they could say they its there. As for Denmark, it didn't even work properly, I couldn't drop loads off, manually, and when I tried to drop them off automatically my trailer flew up in the air in an amusing manner. Speaking of Denmark though, The Scandinavian map by pro mods, is amazing, definitely going to give going east a run for its money. It may be a fraction of the size of TSM, but where TSM lacks detail, and honestly in some places effort the promods map is oozing in it, even nice little easter eggs such as the Scania factory/driving centre, and the volvo factory. Everyone should check that map out, it's easily the best one I've seen so far.

      Delete
    3. TSM and Europe rebuilding map have good parts. I think that 10€ is too much for small part of map.
It is better to make 10€ for complete east part, 10€ north, 10€ west and 10€ for south. That is potentially 40€ income.
Why I think that 10€ for this is problem.

      1) This is small peace of map and for example East II you should buy this East I because you can not jump from Poland to Moscow without this part. Problem: you can't buy separate parts.
      2) To connect Poland and Moscow, for example, you will need more then 30€ with politic of small parts of map for 10€. And where are other parts of Europe.
We will need to have strategy which parts of map to buy and guess what will they produce in future or decide not to produce.
      3) TSM and Europe rebuilding are free maps and can also be upgraded.

      Delete
  10. It´s great to see that more challenging roads will be included, however, i stil think that roads like we see in Scania game ( remember the death road?) some kind of this difficulty should be included in many other parts of the map.
I still think that one of the most important features, is the hard places to park and drop cargo. ( look again to Scania game) is it so difficult to offer something that you have already done? why you insist in keeping those hard features out of the game??
Why we can not see our trucks parked inside the garage?
Why we can not buy our own trailers and park them in our garages?
Why we can not buy those inicial garages?after transforming one into 5 capacity, the garages for sale are all transformed, why?

And i don´t say that expanding the map is not important, in fact, i think it is really important if we can drive in different environements, close to reality, what i am trying to say, like so many other players, is the importance of do not let the game became boring, that´s it. If we feel the game boring driving this trucks, picking up and delivering cargos, how it is going to be driving a bus ?? what you intend to do to don´t let that happen??

Please SCS, i believe you read our comments and i know that you agree with many, or all, of this words. Try to apply your efforts to try to reach what most of players want.

Congratulations for the good work but let´s try to make it even better.

    Cheers
    JP

  17. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but may I ask what criteria you were using when selecting those "selected testers" for testing the DLC?

I am Hungarian, member of the internal beta testing group, with a relatively active membership (that is, dozens of bug reports) under my belt. Based on this, I would think that my "services" would be useful for testing a DLC including parts of Hungary, but it seems my assumption was wrong.

That said, I hope that the DLC will indeed provide the quality that Piotrek describes above, but I hope that the same level of polish and detail will go for the Hungarian sections as well, even if no Hungarian testers took part in the QA process.

  40. Dear SCS... I'm from Portugal and I simply don't understand why ET2 doesn't have my country, I hope that you introduce once again at least in ET3.
I love your game, but I would like to see some more little, tyde and full of holes roads. furthermore I wonder why don't we have some sport cars in the road? what's happens to Ferraris or audi r8? All they gone? What's the matter with the police? doesn't have a single patrol car? Do they obligated to sell all the patrol cars in order to buy some radars? :)
As someone mencioned before, I also would like to have something like contract service, and second hand trucks or trailers.
One last recomendations that I didn't see anybody mention that. Why all vehicules don't turn their wheels in the corners?
I hope I could help you with my intervention. GO SCS!

    1. +1 I don't care about the sports cars but I totally agree 'bout the contracts, 2nd hand truck-dealers and our own trailers! that would be awesome! I'm not a game programmer or any kind of developer so my knowledge abouth this is almost zero, but I wonder how difficult is it to "copy and paste" some parts/features (mentioned above) from, for example, 18WOS? guys tell me your opinion 'bout that ;) Cheers and keep it truckin'

      Delete
    2. In general - yes, there is something which could be called "copy and paste" for non-developer. And it's often used - even if you have almost zero knowledge, you know you can write a library useful for different projects. And it's possible with bigger parts of software too. But in case of ETS2: it's so different to 18WoS that it's obvious it would be much, much easier to develop these things from scratch, I even believe it's almost impossible to take them from 18WoS and rewrite/remake them for ETS2.

To be honest, I miss these features in ETS2 too. I love ETS2, I admire the work SCS done and I'll totally buy Going East and any of their future games. On the other hand, Across America, Pedal to the Metal or American Long Haul were much more entertaining thanks to those features, and many others. I believe it's even big question for SCS on every new project, if it should be more game or more focused on simulation or something else. Even if they are bigger company now, they are still pretty small company, they surely can't develop perfect game where you can decide if you wanna more entertainment or more simulation. It must be about compromises, still after years. They spent unbelievable amount of time, money and human resources on better simulation, physics, truck models, sound recording; many many things which looked like toys in WoS are almost fantastic in ETS2. No wonder they didn't had all those resources for giving us some of entertaining elements we loved in WoS. I believe one day, they bring us perfect piece of software which will be both perfect entertainment and perfect simulator, but until that time, we should be glad for that what was possible to develop.

    3. I was just curious about that...however you're right, it's a fantastic game and I'm absolutely going to buy the DLC, there are no problems in spendig 10 euros when bigger companies such EA (and many others) "pretend" much more money...so...this is just what I think ;) lookin' forward to September

  45. Great message from the beloved fan/tester... I hope the next dlc (after "Going East") adds more to Italy and Introduces some new countries like Spain and Russia etc :)... And if SCS got into contact with the makers of Scandinavian ProMod and implemented their map (which has been in the works for 1 year) into ETS2 fully supported, that would be wonderful !

  46. In real life, truck have a one device called tachograph. Why the hell in ETS, in 'real' simulation of trucks driving, we don't have it? You can drive in ETS world 12 hours without fine? Another problem, where is police cars? Where is AI car accidents? In first part, 18 WoS we had some some suprises on the road, closed road caused by accidents. On this time, we have only driving, cargo delivering, big map, great trucks models... and that's all. we miss about some surprises on the road :)

  48. I love poland, I love the fact that they are expanding the map in that direction, but after that will be done it would be a nice idea to expand it through whole europe, I mean the game is called euro truck simulator (2) but they could expand to spain/portugal, scandinavia, russia and turkey. I understand that would be a lot of work and would take a lot of time but in a few years time they could probably do that, don't they?

    1. Turkey? Only 3% of Turkey are in Europe.
Even Kazakhstan have more, 12% :]

    2. I don't know what you know about logistics but Turkish Companies are the biggest and best European Logistic Companies...

      Delete
    3. You should buy a map, Russia and Turkey are in Asia for the biggest part.

      Delete
    4. It would be much more interesting to have Turkey in game than much West Europe. But I hope for both, it would be nice to have almost whole Europe on the game, so the name can really be EURO truck simulator.

  49. Wow, amazing work! Really looking forward to its release! I really hope seeing Northern Europe in a future DLC.
Also, I have read that quite a large number of people think the game is getting boring. This is absolutely not true! I love ETS as much as I did back in October last year.

  54. Bus Driver 2 would be a great hit! Other bus similators don't come close to the old one, not to mention if you use part from ets 2 how good it would be!!

    1. There will be Euro Coach Simulator, most probably based on ETS2. But you're right, I would love a game focused on city buses rather than coaches. Well, there are thousands ways where SCS go and they can't fullfil all wishes at the same time. I only hope there will be direct successor of Bus Driver one day. Of course, what I wrote does not mean I'm not looking forward for ECS.

    2. If you want a good city bus sim, get OMSI. Graphic wise it's not spectacular, but nevertheless it's the best bus sim out there. The game itself only has 1 map (plus one tiny tutoral map) but there are tons of free user made maps (both real and fictional, buses etc.

      Delete
    3. OMSI is crap. I want DRIVE a bus, have choice tens of routes, several bus models, etc. instead of clicking miliard of button only for start engine.

      Delete
    4. You clearly haven't played OMSI. You only need 2 keys to start the engine; E to turn on the electronics and M to start the engine.

You sure you're not confused with another bus simulator?

  57. "If you are not from Poland, you must know that Polish roads are really specific. Most of main roads are tight, narrow and going through hundreds of towns and cities. What is more, the condition of them is rather bad. On the other hand, many of them are now under renovation or reconstruction."

Roads here in poland are tragic in many many places. But it is not even possible for ETS2 engine to put true feelings of that roads :) It would need technology from GTA 4 where roads have holes, bumbs etc. I really miss that in ETS 2 :( As for tragic polish roads it would be fun to see how suspension works on them and it would also need engine to be able to transfer bad conditions into suspension of a truck so more maintenance would be needed after long visit in poland :)

    1. Finally someone reasonable understand that ETS2 engine / current technology / world editing system is not capable of potholes and bumps and these things, it would need to develop another technology. (Everything what's possible now is some prefab with hole, and that's good solution for Extreme Trucker or maybe STDS, but not for ETS2 world.) I believe one day we can count with that, but I'm also almost sure it will be not in ETS2.

      Delete
    2. The trucks driving physics are easily good enough for any road condition. The AI is the problem, because they aren't really driving and the AI has to be rewritten to behave natural on crappy roads.

  58. This game is absolutely fantastic. This DLC mean for me an each other polish trucker a lot. I think that ETS2 have potencial and should evolve for a long time. I think that something like personal PACK for example could be a great stuff in next DLC's. It's could be contain maybe something like accessories, maps, pennants, scarves or souvenirs from different cities. SCS team think about that. :)

    Cheers from POLAND

  59. SCS should learn with MOdders how to make a challenge map...Europe rebuilding and PRO MODS is crazy far the best map out there. SCS map looks the same everywhere, we know every country have big differences, so why prefabs is the same? anyway i will buy that DLC just to help them.

I think you should create your own game, instead use the others hard work.

  70. Dont care any new models and countries, not priorite numper one! Game needs seriously some challenge. Game changing stuff it's just too easy and boring now. Competing company, your drivers some times can ruin their mission et cetera. Not have playing months and maybe even gonna play because I think there is gonna happen any radical changes to been better, maybe next game.

    1. You are right to be more of a challenge in the game to not be boring. These two things help! Multiplayer or diverse assemblies, such as bogies and tandem. But we know that it will not be just because of the SCS requires more time.

    1. +1 SCS is getting stupid with there silly posts and waste of time ideas. The DLC is a huge waste since they can't even fix the bugs properly in the normal version of ETS2 also the game play just sucks, they should be improving game play, company control, contacts, trailers, better control of staff, Stock market, COMPETITION.

      Delete
  76. What bugs? I have yet to encounter any serious bugs...

But then again, I don't rape the game with a bazillion mods, only one for the Mercedes logo's and one for trailer textures.

  77. This game is being better every day!
Can you please put more cities in Italy (my country ^^')?

  78. Scs software excuse me , is it an -Euro- truck simulator ?
Well , then it look like an incomplete simulator game about the map of all euro-nations as game title and start base point .
In addition another field to improve it would be the "IA" about traffic system and on the roads events .
Another point , i think the road in some points on sun reflections effects results too many dazzling .
Anyway as a first point , i wanted to say the european roads map of each european nation as a euro truck simulator based title and base point of start .

    Greetings .

    Daniel .
