Pictures from American Truck Simulator

Your questions are coming again and again through all communication channels: "What is the release date for American Truck Simulator? What are the features going to be? Please tell us and show us more!"

Trouble is, we are not exactly sure ourselves, it's a moving target we are working on. Any release date you may see anywhere in the media or coming from the distribution channel are only speculations at this stage. For almost half a year, we have been adjusting and re-adjusting our internal plans, and we may still need to do it again.

Part of the answers depends on our negotiations with US truck manufacturers. We don't want to release even the initial version of the game (which frankly will only be a "slice" of the future big whole-continent 100+ cities vision of the complete game) with unlicensed vehicles. We have been through the trouble with ETS2, and it complicates things just too much. We want to set the bar high and push for maximum fidelity, and proper branding when vehicles are introduced into the game is very important to have our game taken seriously.

On the world content side, the team building the game has been growing, and we see real magic happening in the map! But as with everything, it is a balancing act - the more detail we put in, the longer it takes to build. We need to get our content creation pipeline into the best possible shape for the initial game release to be able to support it with a stream of additional content releases down the line. It would be great to be able to use the word "rapid" somewhere in the previous sentence, in fact it has been the goal of our programming team in recent months to make our tools more productive, but you already know us, we will be trying our best not to push your patience to the limits. ;-)

What does AB-normal mean? Not normal.

What does AB-original mean? Not original.

"Aboriginal" is a white man's word, that means you are not original, not a native of the land.. so they can take your land.. and they did.

  3. if you are small team, you may not waste your resources.
ATS is far future and ETS2 have space for profit and work without big delays.
Your problem is that you are small team without concrete vision of your projects.
Put ATS aside and finish ETS2 or leave ETS2 and give ATS this year.

    2. anonymous you are wrong. SCS has grown because of ets2 sales. When they were developing the game they had like 10-15 people and now they have 30-35 or a bit more than 35. New projects will bring more money to the company and us fans will make us happy. The mods is what keeps ETS2 still alive.

If they grown huge why so delaying???
ETS2 developing is not free. DLC can make profit.
They fault is that they didn't make game right from start and now they change and waste people on core game.

    6. I vote for finishing the ETS2, I don't care of ATS.
I would pay for a DLC with Volvo FM, DAF CF, Mercedes-Benz Arocs,
      MAN TGS, ...
I would like to see a DLC with older trukcs, with real engines and gearboxes.
I really like the last update from ETS2, but in the next one I think the game need 16 speed gearbox, more chassis for the trucks, side skirt for all the truck, for MAN a side skirt without V8 style.

    7. To get old trucks in the game it would mean that they have to get license from the manufacturers. I would prefer second hand trucks which are on the game. So my idea is that you start with a crappy Scania Streamline for example you make jobs in order to get money and then you can either fix it to 100% or trade in with a new truck.

      Delete
    8. I agree the idea with second hand truck, but I don't understand a thing: they need to get license from the manufacturers for every cab, engine,..(I mean older)? they already have license
And what do you think people of box trucks with dolly trailer (I know it is not easy to drive them), or what about DLC with Nordic countries higher trailer and double trailers (40-60 tonnes) and these bigger trailers only for that countries (and in England the truck are higher too)? I know it's complicated but it's just an idea
In Europe if I know right the legal trucks have 40 tonnes (4x2), every bigger truck (6x2, 6x4) need special license, In England legal trucks reach 44 tonnes (6x2) the biggest, without any special license

    9. Just because they have the 'license' from a manufacturer to put a truck in, doesn't mean they have the license to put in any truck ever made from that manufacturer..

Anyway, you guys amaze me more and more, like I said before, you're probably THE ONLY game developers who not only listen to our ideas and implement them, but most of the time you even outrun our ideas and come up with something even better...this case makes no exception. It's USA, it's big, the map has to be huge. You guys understood that...you're thinking just like us, the players. Regarding the licensing, I'm sure there something more to it then just branding, but honestly I couldn't care less if a truck is exactly like the original one, but with a different name...big deal. But I understand the whole situation.

In any case, this game will be sick, no doubt about that. Take your time, develop something great for us and the rewards will come fast. The impatient lunatics will still be here, it won't matter if you release it today or after 2 years.

  10. Would SCS ever consider making what would be ETS3 into a World Truck Simulator?

Make the EU map a little larger (scale wise) and include North America all as one big game? I'm not personally a big fan of T-cabs, so ATS is probably something I will pass on. But to have it all under one title with a slightly larger scale map (to allow small countries like the UK to have a few extra cities) would be something I would really get behind.

On another note; as a skinner. Would you please return the trailers to having a two sided UVmap so we can paint each side individually! I suspect it is easier for you the way it is in ETS2, but it really screws over us as skinners when trying to replicate real liveries.

    2. GTA V has better trailer coupling though, no need to press a button to hook a trailer on!

      Delete
    3. In GTA trailers get sucked to tghe truck... Even when you're 15 feet away from it. It's nice on an arcade game, but for a simulaor it'd absolutly suck.
And really, when pressing 1 button is too hard for you, I urge you to go and see a doctor.

      Delete
    4. When you are incapable of basic comprehension, i urge you to go and see a doctor.

In GTA V, you have to reverse the fifth-wheel into the trailer's kingpin quite accurately, not within "15 feet".

I didn't say pressing a button is hard. It is quite the opposite, it is EASIER. Pressing a button to couple your truck to the trailer is unrealistic.

      Delete
    5. Well clearly you need to go and see a doctorthen, since I just explained how unrealistic GTA V's attaching mechanics work.
In ETS you still need to be relativly close to the kingpin and if you keep reversing you damage your truck and trailer. In GTA V it just attaches out of nothing.

Why the heck am I even explaining this to someone who thinks an arcade third person action game is realistic?....

      Delete
    6. You need to be more precise in GTA V. In GTA V if you have a fender hanging outside the trailer, it will not connect. In ETS2 you basically just need any part of your truck under the trailer and the "PRESS T to connect" notification will come up.

So not only is ETS2's detection area greater, and thus easier, it adds the unrealistic option to then press a button to connect the trailer, rather than auto-coupling like in real-life.

Why the heck am I even explaining this to someone who thinks that mentioning one aspect of an arcade third person action game as being more realistic means I am saying the entire game is more realistic?.....

      Delete
    7. Let's just agree to diragree and say that both games are completly unrealistic when it comes to the coupling mechanics.

      Delete
    8. strangerberry says "In ETS you still need to be relativly close to the kingpin and if you keep reversing you damage your truck and trailer."

that isnt real either mate. if ya lined it up it will lock in and ya wont be able to keep reversing and damage ya truck or trailer by crashin into it, only thing ya can do is if ya keep reversing you drag the landing gear cuz its still down and drag tires cuz ya dont have airlines hooked up so trailer brakes still locked on but that shouldnt happen cuz u will hear n feel the fifth wheel lockin in plus movin a trailer with brakes locked on aint easy i can tell ya

but why am i bloody explainin this to someone who thinks you can keep reversin a truck into a trailer after the kingpins locked in?

hey why dont all of us be dicks n use rhetorical questions when all we have is ignorance..

      Delete
    9. Some fifth wheels don't automaticly lock when you hit the kingpin, not sure about newer fifth wheels though. But it's always good idea to check if it's locked! The kingpin can snap or bend if you reverse into it too fast. So it is possible to hit the trailer when attaching. That is why you should line up with the trailer and reverse gently.
And as you said, moving a trailer with locked wheels is going to be hard, so just have the pin lock into the fifth wheel and driving off (as in GTA V) is going to be hard.

      Delete
    10. "Some fifth wheels don't automaticly lock when you hit the kingpin, not sure about newer fifth wheels though."

The trucks in ETS2 all have automatically locking kingpins. Please point me to an example of a fifth-wheel for a truck (the same kind've trucks featured in the games we are discussing) that has to be manually locked into place.

"But it's always good idea to check if it's locked! The kingpin can snap or bend if you reverse into it too fast. So it is possible to hit the trailer when attaching. That is why you should line up with the trailer and reverse gently."

You can't reverse TOO gently. The fith-wheel mechanism requires a certain amount of momentum from the truck to allow the kingpin to slip past the mechanism that locks it into place. Again, you don't seem to understand the mechanics of a fifth-wheel. On top of that, if your trailer's kingpin sheers off or bends from the relatively small forces of reversing a truck into it, the trailer is obviously already damaged and since this kind've damage isn't possible in ETS2, it is a moot point in our discussion. Also, you can easily check if it's locked in when you walk past it on your way to raise the landing gear (something neither game simulates).

"And as you said, moving a trailer with locked wheels is going to be hard, so just have the pin lock into the fifth wheel and driving off (as in GTA V) is going to be hard.:"

Yes, in the real world, but both games automatically connect airlines and raise the landing gear whenever the trailer is attached to the truck, so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Both games are unrealistic, that is why I simply said GTA V's trailer coupling was "better", as it performs the coupling automatically as you reverse into the trailer, as it does in the real-world. I even stated the reason I thought it was better was because there was "no need to press a button to hook a trailer on".

Of course you have said "In GTA V it just attaches out of nothing." Obviously fueled by your belief that modern trucks as featured in ETS2 and GTA V need some kind've button press or non-automatic mechanical action to lock the kingpin into place. It doesn't attach out of nothing. As in the real-world it attaches by the momentum of the reversing truck forcing the kingpin past the locking mechanism, locking it into place until such time as you pull the release pin.

      Delete
    11. And in actuality if you reverse into a trailer at normal coupling-speeds in ETS2 you WILL likely damage your trailer by reversing into it, because rather than the momentum being absorbed by the kingpin hitting the truck's fifth-wheel, there is nothing to stop you so you WILL hit the trailer unless you reverse unrealistically slow (at a speed not great enough to lock the kingpin into place). That is the danger in the REAL WORLD, you need a certain amount of momentum (speed) to lock the kingpin in and if you miss align that speed will not be absorbed by the kingpin and you will likely hit your trailer before you have time to brake.

So again, I say GTA V's coupling-system is better.

      Delete
    12. "The kingpin can snap or bend if you reverse into it too fast"

And I'd love to see some evidence for this, as I've seen some pretty horrific truck accidents and the trailer was still attached to the truck.. meaning the kingpin was still intact. If a kingpin can survive the immense forces it encounters during a collision, I think it can handle being reversed into, even if you changed the gearing in the truck to achieve a higher rate of speed in reverse.

I think you're just talking out your a** at this point..

      Delete
    13. Yes the Kingpin can get damage. And bent. Not so much the pin on trailer that you have to worry with. It is the spring thats easy to damage. And hes right and wrong. the truck pushing back helps lock into place, However there a switch in a manner of speaking that the pin push in cashing it to lock into place. Good rule of thumb. Allways do a tug twice before ever assuming its lock! never just drive off. Tug incase you dont know what that means. Yes putting the tran in a low gear like 2 gear. Release clucth slowly. if it is lock the tires well start grip hard and raise truck slowly because brakes being on. No lock well you coming out from the trailer. Also never slam into the fith wheel. 2 reason one damge the locking. 2 and what most of the time happens. Hes if landing gear is not set right height. and you over shoot due to trailer being to high guese where that trailer going. at that rate of speed. I've heard of trucks losing sleepers almost the driver over that. and thats a 70 inch sleeper. not these small ass trucks on ets. You never push a button to lock a fith wheel. may have un jamm the bar, but no button on Console. Only to unlock if your'e truck as that option.

    1. +1

Especially for fuel tankers, you should drop off to a few different gas stations.

Even heavy-equipment (drop-deck trailer) you could have a few machines on there and have to drop off to two or more locations (also pick up from different locations maybe).

Same with containers, if you're doing 2x20 footers you don't always get them from the same yard, or deliver both to the same place.

Most freight could have multi-drop, multi-pickups. Makes it more interesting (and realistic) than just driving from A to B all the time.

Also, if they put in double trailers (which are used here in 'US of A') this will allow variation as you can only haul doubles in certain areas, so you might pick up your lead trailer in city then drive to outskirts and pick up your second trailer, and have to drop one before entering destination city. Unload that trailer then come back to other trailer, switch trailers and go unload the second trailer etc. Gives you more things to do/plan.

      Delete
    2. Multi-drop jobs. I LIKE IT! I hope SCS add this.

This comment has nothing to do vvith ATS, but it is about ETS2.
It would be nice if vve could buy second hand trucks, they are older, broken, more miles (or km.) and faster broken. But all this for a 10.000 to 50.000 price range. Maybe even more expensive, for better trucks.
It would also be nice if vve could see our drivers driving.

    2. The big problem there is licensing. The major truck makers who license their trucks want them to be shown in a positive light where they are pristine and look awesome. That's probably why we don't see actual damage.
A truck maker doesn't want their trucks shown as old broken down rust buckets.

      Delete
    3. Well, they wouldn't have to be "shown" as old broken down rust buckets (I doubt they wanna show rust), but licensed trucks in ETS2 to sustain damage (not visible) that needs to be repaired. So you could have used trucks which have damage. They are cheaper but will need to have money spent on them to get them to drive like the new trucks. So starting out you can buy a truck that doesnt drive perfect but is affordable.

    4. Or you could buy a Majestic rust bucket that turns into a Mercedes if you repair and wash it?

You are really good at making good and enjoyable games. I've never played a game so long as I'm playing Euro Truck Simulator. More than a year SCS I'm playing ETS and it's still fun. bolus(World of Trucks)

    2. Are you serious? You sound a little bit ungrateful.. Americans have been using the same exact sim since 2006 while you guys now have the best Euro truck sim out there, whether it needs more work or not. I think you can manage. They deserve an update for once in almost a freakin decade that isn't some arcade based garbage with phony shadows and trucks.

I agree mate, it seems these people are self-centred and selfish. They have no interest in the American sims so theyre trying to get all development poured into the game that THEY want, despite SCS basically catering their efforts entirely to the euro-based games for the last few years, it's still not enough for them!

Plus they've probably never played any of the old 18wos games etc to know how bad the physics are for starters. It's been the american-based truck games that have basically got SCS to where they are now.. now these selfish people want SCS to just make europe-based games cause thats all they want.

  42. Take the time you SCS! I'm patient enough to wait at any time.

I don't even really care about a release date, I'm just anxious to get more pictures! I love waiting for a release and seeing development screens and trailers.
I'm sure many people won't agree with me on this one! :P

It does look like you're putting a bit more effort into the scenery of ATS, I like that. ETS 2's scenery is a bit 'generic'.

But since most American truck manufactories are owned by European companies, isn't it easier to obtain their licenses?

    ReplyDelete
  46. You know what a good idea would be? Having ATSM within the game. (Like a later on patch as you will perfect it unlike GTA V.) Having a company on the multiplayer and able to have you friends join and work together racking in more money than other companies. Another idea is, if you favor one company to deliver from, like let's say, You like to deliver from the company, Apple, instead of Microsoft, you can have the deals from them only. Have each company asking you to deliver from to have different personalities, or outcomes. Or maybe, the faster and quality of your delivery to have the company you deliver for increase pay of all new shippings you do. That is just some ideas I would like to throw at the community. Yeah, some really challenging ideas, but I like em. Doesn't mean everyone has to. I like it how it is now, but hey, doesn't hurt to be given ideas and thoughts. Thanks.

  51. Thank you so much for these awesome pictures!

I hope to see you posting further information more frequently again. It doesn't matter to me whether you can tell us about exact features or release dates, but compared to waiting in uncertainty, it feels much better to watch the game(s) growing week by week, month by month.

And finally, I'd also like to make a small suggestion for your future games:
Please don't force any unnecessary requirements (including [1] the online activation process which could also be offered as an alternative to an offline CD validation every time the game is started for those who own the box version, [2] World-of-Trucks-only features that technically don't need to require a World-of-Trucks-account and [3] Steam-only DLC which could also be published as an add-on bundle in the form of a CD) upon players. Just take a look at GIANTS Software's Farming Simulator, for example. I'm sure you're able to do things just as well as they did, if you want to (and if you don't want to, I think I'd better think thrice whether to buy any of your future games... And please don't get me wrong: This is not meant to be a form of extortion. In fact, it would be to my detriment as I would find it quite sad not to play the great simulators you're working on, but that's the way I handle games that don't correspond to these reasonable requirements).

  61. I love how you actually have two different models of hotel there. The concrete(?), run-down looking one in the desert and the stone/wood cabin-style in the wooded area. Also the difference in trees and vegetation really separates the two starkly different areas more than just the grass/sand. On top of that there is some great attention to detail such as the rocks surrounding the desert hotel garden/sign area. It's these types of things which really had character and a sense of different areas rather than generic copy/paste areas that create a wonderful world that you just want to get lost in.

That was my problem with ETS2, it didn't feel like real spaces you wanted to actually be in.

Already I want to visit those two hotels, where as in ETS2 I never wanted to go to the hotels because they had no soul and they all looked the same.

I'm probably in the minority here, but even though it's a simulator-type game I still like my games to feel like real places to help me escape/role-play in.

I hope that the gas stations feel real and that you have to exit the freeways to access them. I also hope the depots have more variety and soul this time as most were identical and did not feel like real depots. I love reversing big rigs but the depots made every drop-off bitter-sweet. The DHL depot in Europe Map Rebuilding by Satan19990 (also used in TSM 4.6.1 @ Calabria) actually feels like you're going to a proper depot.

  62. SCS- dont forget american trucks dont have syncho-mesh gearboxes. You need to rev-match to change gears. Please do not keep it like it is in ETS2 or it will NOT be an accurate experience of American truck driving.

I think you should try and get some American truck drivers (perhaps from a truck driving school) to be involved in the build/testing to make sure things like this are correct. We don't want ETS2 on an American map, we want AMERICAN TRUCK SIMULATOR.

    Thankyou.

  67. Please SCS, remove all the hand-holding stuff (or make them options).

    I hate the pop-up notifications.

i.e. press such and such to skip parking. I can understand some noobs might get frustrated trying to park the trailer and want to skip, but make it an option, I hate seeing it EVERY time I pull into a yard.

Also the pop-up "your handbrake is on (*DING*)". No s**t! I know my handbrake is on! I put it on! And if I didn't know, I can look and see the yellow parking brake lever is pulled out OR I can look and see the light on my dash..

I understand the whole making the game accessible for the non-truckers etc but at least give us the option to turn this stuff off please.

And please before you get too far along, please put into your physics the ability for DOUBLE TRAILERS again. I don't expect you to include them in the game yourself, but at least put the option in the gamecode (like all your old 18wos games) so that modders can put them in the game (in ETS2 you removed this ability from game code so not even modders could do it!)

Lots of players who still play 18wos: Haulin (because they didnt like ETS2 limitations) will not come along to ATS either if they cant do things that they can in older games like Haulin (Such as make double trailer mods).

  72. @SCS Software, I would think that a good way to manage the size of the game, as well as development time would be to work on it state by state or region by region. As far as the trucks are concerned, do your best to get what licenses you can, but please include the only cabover still offered to those of us that live on this continent: the Freightliner Argosy.

As I have done in the past, I will offer my services to test the game, both alpha and beta stages. I will also offer my knowledge of the industry as a current driver hauling agricultural, construction and other flatbed stuff, and the knowledge of laws for a variety of states(should you want that knowledge), and lastly, I can send you pictures of the interior of my truck(2011 International Prostar, 70" midroof.). And detailed pictures of 53' flatbeds and step decks along with two types of removable goose neck trailers used for moving the largest equipment, I have experience with two of the three connection methods available(mechanical and air assist). Have a good day.

Also, I did want to add, John Deere like to contract about 75% of the loads as round trip, so we will take a combine from the factory(East Moline, Illinois) to the receiver(we will choose the Baltimore, Maryland docks at Dundalk) then return to the factory empty. The rgn's(removable goose neck) are high dollar trailers, and harder to find in sufficient numbers.

  76. I hope this game is open world, so the driver can get out of the truck and can enter public buildings. and is an adventure of a small truck and has grown to become the owner of the company, on condition that the driver can get in and out of the truck, like gta. can take a taxi and pay, so we could trip without driving a car, so we could see the city from inside the taxi. or we ride in the car. it was definitely interesting. so there are humans and vehicles, without criminals. and we have an apartment or a house and garage. if our truck is far we can take a taxi or take the other truck. So we live in it.

    1. There's already a game like that. It's called 'real life'... Try it, it's great fun!

No, but seriously, it's Truck Simulator, not even Trucker Simulator. Almost everything you said is completly irrelevant for a truck simulator.

Looking at other simulators with a third person, walk around mode (whatever you want to call it) is aweful. I have never played a sim in which you could walk around that wasn't (exept maybe farming simulator, but even in that game, it wasn't really needed to walk around and the controls and animations were odd).

    3. @strangerberry: you are right, this game is only a simulator. When I play Ets2, the streets and the city is very nice, but I am tired if always to drive a truck, because i always focus on the road. and the beauty of the city/streets neglected. I hope in ATS there be a Second Driver feature to fill the seat in driver side, rather than empty.

@anonymous: in gta, i think we cannot look inside the truck, coz no inside camera mode.

    5. I agree. I normally use 0 key to sim that. But smoke breaks or refreshing drinks for non-smokers wouldnt hurt. You can make it first person with a driver able to walk around..but this game is awesome and rank way much better than othrs. Physics, graphics are certainly improving with time. Only the company management or storyline to making much interesting

      Delete
    6. @Anonymous 4:18AM
I didn't say that or anything close to that.
I said that the entire get out of the truckand walk around and start a virtual life stuff is irrelevant bullshit for a trucking game.
I wouldn't want to stop every 4 minutes (4 hours in game) to grab a fucking sandwhich, bang/murder prostitutes and take a piss.
The entire concept is crap and I bet a lot of people will complain about it if it'd get implemented, even the people who are saying it'd be great on theblog and forum.
Really, it's a waste of time to develop that.

As I said, its TRUCK Sim, not trucker sim. The entire game is about driving a truck, not being a truck driver.

But OI think some cutscenes of the driver doing stuff (hooking up the trailer, going to bed and what not) would be great. Rig N Roll was a piece of sht, but the cutscenes were actually adding something to the game.
