What camera do you use the most to drive a truck?

During development, we talk a lot about user experience. The perspective from which the player perceives the world we have built is of course a major part of it.

Some players may prefer pure simulation experience and only view the world from inside the truck cabin, other players may rely on the behind-camera. What about you?

  1. Cabin wiew is really much better to drive and gives feelings that am really behind a truck's driving wheel , tried al cams , for me it's the best way and comfortable way to play the game.

    2. I Agree - the cabin view provides by far the most immersive and realistic experience for me, and I also find it just seems more intuitive and enjoyable than any of the other views.

  2. I use outside camera only to enjoy the appearance of my truck when its red light on the crossroad :)

    1. This. I drive from inside that cabin but enjoy going to the drive by cam for screen shots. I have cabin cam set to left stick click and drive by cam set to right stick click on the controller.

Parking with Interior view is awesome!
And sometimes Cinematic on straight lines - it's beautiful!

  7. I use interior camera when driving and when parking the trailer I stick my head out the window. I have tried exterior camera and has some advandatges like be able to see the world but I always find hard to control the truck and often will crash.

  8. SCS, make PLEASE hands on a wheel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually, they can remove the wheel altogether because with a steering wheel controller there are two wheels. At least the option to remove it would be useful. On some trucks the wheel hides some of the indicators/gauges.

      Delete
    2. I totally agree, all major simulators have hands on a wheel, it feels more realistic because when you drive you don't actually see your own hands on the steering wheel.

    1. translation : I rarely use camera behind the truck, when I park between two trucks. Sometimes I used universal view (8), when I wanted to see created city :D. But otherwise, i have a view from interior. Because of this, I wrote, that v8 seems to me more quieter than like ordinary R :)

  10. Cabin view only. If i change view from cabin view to another, i do that just for fun not because driving :)

    1. I forgot to add that it's very nice, because you have add right mirror to the cabin. In GTS I had to set the view to the left mirror and the right was unavailable (maybe I haven't seen this parameter set). Now having 2 mirrors the driving is easy and nice.

    1. +1

Trailer should lock in by reversing into it (no need to press T).

They should have a screen showing airlines on back of truck and front of trailer and you have to drag them with your mouse and put them in the right spot (red to red, blue to blue).

ANd they should show animation of winding landing gear up, perhaps tap a certain button, faster you tap it, faster driver cranks the handle.

Let us adjust the camera controls in real-time, editing text-files, reloading game, seeing what it did, exiting game, editing text-files, reloading game, seeing what it did, exiting game..... kind've sucks just to correct driving position in a game where driving position is kind've important.

    4. +1, Adjust the seat. I use the mouse to look around. Or it would be nice to have a dynamic interior view (looking more to left when turning left).

  14. I say that scs should put more time in the interior than the exterior such as costumizing the interior. Because 95% of the people that play this game uses that veiw more.

    1. It's a truck simulator not Trick My Truck. Interiors should be as close to how they come from factory as SCS can possibly make them. If you want to pimp interior out, you can earn to change textures, it's really not hard.

  15. Although there are mods to change the fov it would be nice to have a fov setting within the game.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Interior cam of course. Add to change seat height and hands on steering wheel would be awesome

  17. well... i use cab camera if i'm driving with my wheel, but i use the outside free camera when driving with wasd keys. :)

  18. Definitely interior view for driving. However, the interior view in ETS2 is good already. I think the exterior view needs more work, more freedom. The view is too restricted right now, I don't feel I can zoom out enough, and I don't have the freedom of movement I want, primarely up and down. I also don't like the automatic zooming when moving the camera around the truck.

Optimally, I'd like to see the exterior camera totally non restricted, like in Tricky Truck: http://trickytruck.com/ (free demo, so you can check it out). I get that this gives the player the possibility to see beyond the closed off streets and above the blocking walls and bushes, but honestly: It really doesn't matter. It will open for much better screenshots, without using the modded in free roam camera (which definitely opens for seing the flaws of the map world).

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with more freedom with exterior view (perhaps like a third person view walking around the truck, like the Munchen citybus simulator for example).

    ReplyDelete
  23. Always in the interior view, i like to drive and park without HUDs, i look at right mirror tuning the camera :)
Driving with a steering wheel with like G27 is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I also prefer the cab view, especially when you play with a G25 or well any other steering wheel in combination with a headset or so .. you can almost imagine sitting there behind the wheel hauling cargo across Europe :) but I think they should increase interior options and lookaround to give a more 'being there feeling'
Speaking about interior camera (not sure if this is a right moment to do but anywho..) try to fix the interior so lower cabs (height of the driver position) so that even from the inside you can see the difference.
I found an image to show you what I mean because I'm not good in explaining it in words what I mean :) ..
http://www.freegreatpicture.com/cat/photo-19006 you see how the red one is lower as the grey one? Make it look from the inside like this too, now every truc no matter what cab is the same height from the interior

The exterior cams are pretty fun too, mostly to enjoy the nature you're gliding through or when you have to make a hard maneuver and you aren't sure about it.

  35. I only use the interior camera while driving, even when backing up and/or parking the trailer. I always keep the opposite-side mirror overlay on, though, looking back and forth all the time is super annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I use the interior view but the problem is that I can't disable the mirrors on the interior view and therefore I can't achieve a good fps. This is starting to become a problem and I'm sure that it is for others as well because I can't drive properly with the exterior view as I need to see the steering wheel.

I've contacted your support about this and they've been very helpful so far.

    Thanks,

  37. Use mostly cabin view, but with the mod, since the default camera it too far ahead and you cannot see the left side mirror properly (When driving a left hand truck).

External camera is used only to look at the scenery.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Interior camera is the best while driving. Maybe you should add tuning parts for interior, or paintable interior in the next patch or add-on :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Most of time when i play , i use interior cam but outside camera when me and my truck are stopped at traffic lights so i can see around me and also when sometime when driving trough small roads to look some nice sceneries .

    ReplyDelete
  40. i like see outside camera to see how reckless our driving, hope there's camera from ai behind truck

    ReplyDelete
  41. Interior camera for everything, but I change to fixed exterior cam for a moment on some specific situations to see my truck come and go (mountain road). I also use the debug camera (free cam) at gas stations, or to check the pressure of my wheels. So I "walk" around my truck. Even climb stairs up to check everything is OK on the tanker semitrailers ;)

As additional information: I have the FOV on all trucks changed from the default 77 to 44, as I use 3 screens and TrackIR, so I get no deformation. To see my steering wheel I have to look down, and the left mirror takes my 22" monitor's whole height (30cm?), which makes the driving feeling much more realistic than having a full dashboard, wheel and tiny mirrors in all the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Mostly i drive from interior camera, but often also swich for little time to drive from behind, cinema or wheel camera. Sometimes it's not so wise, beacause it has risks.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I also use interior cam and ONLY that. It´s not much of a simulator if you can´t use the mirrors when connecting to your trailer. Now we only need that we can get outside the truck and load everything into the trailer in first person mode. Driving a liftfork for that would be cool!

    - Interior camera 94.13% (3,448 votes)
    - Behind the truck 2.38% (87 votes)
    - Roof camera 0.57% (21 votes)
    - Bumper camera 0.74% (27 votes)
    - More cameras: 2.18% (80 votes)

...now, I'm not an expert in statistics, but I have this strange feeling that interior camera could possibly win this poll ;)

But seriously, come on SCS, what did you expect? ;) Of course we're sitting in the cabin and the only "outside" view we use is when we reverse and stick our heads out of the window.

That said, I do hope that these results will finally motivate you to add the option to roll down the windows and let some outside sound in. You're doing such great job on the audio, but we can't really enjoy it in our cabins.

Besides, did you ever hear the term "trucker arm"? It's when your left arm is your only body part that's tanned... if you hand it out the window. Please let us simulate open windows, I already have a simulation-arm-rest when playing ;)

Considering the number of players that play this with automatic transmissions (higher than those in real life who actually choose to be steering wheel holders) and a keyboard or game controller rather than a steering wheel, it's not necessarily obvious that the majority will also be using interior camera.

I'm surprised it's so high, considering they don't use the other simulation aspects as often.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It's obvious that most people use interior camera.
It would be nice if you'd make a few modifications to it. I have to use FOV mod to see the steering wheel properly. In trucks like MAN you can only see a little part of the wheel, while in Renault, the wheel is way to small, and fits in field of view entirely.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It should be nice if SCS put the two side cameras like in 18WoS - Extreme Trucker 2. That view is awesome for driving, without having the camera be directly behind the truck.

Then the device makes a picture (not a real taken one, but really 'makes' a picture) of your truck, put this also on the screen, and voila, the view '3' is not even close to cheating!

  104. Mostly use interior cams for realistic views although i do find the main interior view a bit restricting as you cant see as much as you would if you were really in the truck (only half the windscreen) i guess thats the limits of a game but is there any way you could perhaps be able to assign different camera views yourself like you can assign different uses for keys or buttons ?
