Inside SCS Software and 1 hour with American Truck Simulator

Some weeks ago we welcomed a very special guest in our office - the one YouTuber and Twitch streamer who is the most dedicated to our truck simulation games of them all: Paul a.k.a. Squirrel!

Paul has finally managed to process the footage he has recorded during his visit in Prague, and started posting it to his YouTube channel in daily installments a few days ago.

The wealth of information in Paul's movies about what is happening at SCS Software, what we are doing and where we are headed with our projects, what is the vision for years to come, is really unprecedented. We were very open in explaining what we do - no question went unanswered. The movies and interviews reveal more than what we have shown you here on our blog so far during the past year. In addition to Squirrel's videos, today we also present you with an exclusive sneak peek at the alpha version of American Truck Simulator. Don't forget that American Truck Simulator is still very much under development and features and environments may change prior to the official release.

    1. ATS should have lengthened green parking spot icon. The ICON used in the ATS demo was designed for ETS cab on top trucks. Maybe just being overly picky. :-)

If you play some big brand Micro... eeer...well, games and simulators, you are more times than not amazed by the fact that yet the same spelling or translation error made it once again into the next version. I also know by experience that while you spent sittin' behind pages and pages of code, you tend not to see the forest because of all those trees, as we say in Germany. So yes, this kind of feedback is helpful. It just depends on the way you bring it forward. And if you do, it's always a sign of respect and appreciation when you also state what you liked about something. Bullbeep vocabulary, however, kicks you out of the discussion because every troll trained civilzed net savy human being will skip your message at the first sign of trouble. So if you wanna be taken serious, be nice!

  11. expensive SCS team, please, expand game opportunities of ATS. having watched video, I didn't find the slightest difference from ETS. of course it only alpha version of game, but nevertheless. don't leave a gameplay without changes. after all it is possible to introduce much that new. for example to leave the tractor (to go to hotel, will refuel or to operate a hitch). to add the competition, fellow travelers. after all there are so many interesting ideas which can be embodied in new ATS. on geympleyny video I saw the same ETS, but with the new card and tractors. in your old games was so much interesting (the advanced economy, competitors, cops) where all this got to? there is a wish to see in ATS gameplay something new, unforgettable, that will look in comparison with ETS something revolutionary and new! I ask, don't leave a gameplay just the same as in ETS....

  14. I like the idea of multi-difficulty trailer parking spots. Will this come to ETS2 with the Scandinavian DLC or do we have to wait for the ATS release?

    Also if possible going from the interview. I think putting (more) people on World Of Trucks would be a good idea. If it's such a game changer and a "savior" for the games than it might be good to quickly develop that in tandem with ETS2 and ATS. Even if it goes at the expense of Coach Simulator and that has to be put, temporarily, in the fridge as a result.

    Bug Report - 64-Bit:
    Oh about ETS2. As said on Steam. With 1.16 64-Bit the plugins (Fanaleds, SimXperience) don't work anymore, even when copying the plugins folder to the folder with the 64-bit executible.
    Also 64-bit has a bug where you can't damage the truck and you won't be fined for traffic collisions.

    1. That is because the plugins your are referring to were build on 32-bit code, they won't work in 64-bit mode. Wait untill they release a 64-bit version

  15. I missed two things in ETS2 and now, apparently, also will be in ATS.
    1. Need to improve the AA, there are many serrated on nearby land ( Usually the cockpit )
    2. The edge of the truck dials contains few polygons, the dials are much square.

    Other than that the game is fantastic, congratulations.

  18. The game looks REALLY good, but one thing heavily bothers me... The sounds. I know it's still in alpha stage, but please don't use those sounds on all the trucks (Air brakes, engines, back-up alarm, turn signal indicator). They are very unrealistic compared to US trucks and sound really bad. Other then that, GREAT WORK!!

    1. I think only the West coast will be included in the initial release. Then they will add on as time goes on. (I'm assuming this, according to what they say in squirrels SCS review on ATS)

  24. Hello, nice to see the game in development.

    But I have some opinions about it.

    I think it would be very cool, if you diversify objects, no plate be equal (one being half off, a new one, the other broken), the same for the fences, and especially for vegetation, it is basically all the same but in different places.

    And a street or other with irregular asphalt, to the truck swing a little bit, it would be very interesting also.

    I mentioned it because it was what led me to stop playing the ETS2, what did I "get sick" of the game.

  26. While the idea of scales is a great idea, there is an element missing... In america we have a department of transportation that has scale houses all over the USA. Usually located just inside the borders of the state on most every major freeway, and somewhere along the freeway or state road in the canter of the state ( often times more then one) .. these are mandatory for driver to pull in to be weighed were as the scales at truck stops are more for the convenience if the driver to make sure they are in compliance with the weight laws

    Minha opinião como sou Brasileiro gosto seus projetos desenvolvimentos dos jogos.
    Com relação American Truck Simulator não pode ser lançado nesse ano 2015 porque o motivo das pessoas falando mal do jogo. A equipe tem todo tempo para fazer o jogo o American Truck Simulator. Eu estou muito paciente eu acho que esse jogo vai ser lançado 2016 entre 2017.

    My opinion as I am Brazilian taste their projects developments of the games.
    With American Truck Simulator relationship can not be released in 2015 because the reason people speaking ill of the game. The team has all the time to make the game the American Truck Simulator. I'm very patient, I think this game will be released between 2017 2016.

  29. The ATS footage looks amazing. The issue people are having with it being too much like ETS2 is probably to do with the way the engine works and sounds as well as the transmission. The engines and transmissions are quite different in the US compared to Europe. The air brake sounds need to be changed and the parking brake sound needs to be a completely different to the foot brake sound. The 18 speed transmission road ranger requires rev matching to change gears without damaging the transmission. The engine brake is completely different to the exhaust brake. The sound is totally different and the mechanics are completely different. Engine brakes (Jake brakes) have 3 settings of braking force and are operated by a switch. When the switch is on the brake is on unless the accelerator or clutch are depressed this means you can turn the brake on and only have it operate when you stop accelerating. The brake does not operate when the engine is revved (which is a current bug in ETS2) many videos on YouTube and Wikipedia pages exist that explain it better and hopefully scs can implement this simple but realistic part of the game that would make it that little bit more realistic as it is a sim after all. Thank you SCS for showing off ATS it looks amazing.

  30. The SCS.

    AI traffic models, little American traffic. Buses must be American. I see the bus from traffic ETS2.
    The interface must be different from ETS2. Think of the us interface Navigator and menu of the game. The game should not be like ETS2. The game should be only new models and details of just creating the game.

    1. I'm not fully worried about double or triple trailers. I'm more worried about them actually getting the trailers the correct length and create prototypical trailers (I didn't see very many trailers that were prototypical correct)

  36. scs i drive american trucks only on ets 2 this game is a replica from ets2 you can't see that same driving same parking same job market 53 foot trailers look like 20 foot trailers and want no Double trailers man is like buying ets 2 all over again you need to improve the driving filing i hope somebody understand want i'm talking about

    1. you have to understand that the game psychics has to be the same for when world of trucks launch, that way you will have one huge game driving all around the world, u can't have different psychics in america different in Europe, Australia ... you get my point, the game just wouldn't work, after all SCS is thinking long term!

SCS Wow guys that was amazing can see why you taken so long but it will be worth the wait I know it, I was just thinking would be possible for you to put into the game a career part so instead of quick job different truck all the time, there is a company that hire's the player and then they drive the same truck, like the U.K truck sim that you guys made. Hope this makes sense. Love you guys, Thanks for the years of fun I've had driving around the e.u.

  45. I expected more .... game content changed only visually ... the feeling of reality remains secondary level. Moder commands do exactly the same.
    may need to allow the truck to crash deformation patterns ... it is even simpler games, but this is a simulator. Why trucks stays clean?

    2 Remarks to the interview with Pavel Sebor:

    1. Euro Coach Simulator gameplay should be similar to Airline Tycoon. For hired drivers driving busses there should be the possibility to either do random charter jobs or to buy licences for routes that are then regularly driven by a number of busses with hired drivers. For that purpose the number of passengers per day should be similated so that setting too many busses on a route make it less efficient

    2. Endgame - Earning too much money: The profit per driver should be less and less the more drivers to have. There is no company in the world with a significant number of employees that has no office workers and managers. So in order to hire more drivers you need a scheduler for say each 10 drivers. And above the schedulers you need a manager (M3) for every 5 schedulers. And above them you need a M2 for every 5 M3. And so on. Of course, managers cost a lot of money.
    But as a first remedy you could simply remove the completely superflous level related bonus which grows instead of shrinking towards the end game where you need no more money at all.
    Also you can lower the gain from skills for higher levels like my hard economy mod does. It rewards more at low levels and less at higher levels. Thats the way to go.

  48. 18 WoS got me into the whole truck simulating thingy. It was some time ago though. Can't wait to return to the States. I'm like a little kid now. I want ATS! Not ETS. OK ETS will do for now (especially with the upcoming scandi-pack) But eagerly waiting for ATS, because this teaser made me drool all over.

  51. The interviews were great to listen to and thanks to SCS again for showing the community an inside sneak peek.

    I've 360 hours logged since I got ETS2 so I fall into the category of finding my own enjoyment and I do not depend on the game's built in achievements etc .... that said, I use a hard economy mod to try and limit the mad prices for job [albeit, they are still out of whack].

    i appreciate that I don't understand the true reality of what is involved with addressing / tweaking difficulty and I was most interested in video #4 and the discussion on Sim Vs Arcade. My own opinion is that trying to meet both sets of expectations with one system is folly. There is a need for effectively two different models, one for Sim and one for Arcade. We have the Arcade today, so just the sim one is needed. Based on the difficulty selection originally, a redone model more sim orientated could help ETS2's longevity and set it up well for future developments in WoT. And none of this questions or removed the everyone's choice.

    Mt thinking is the 50+ recorded hours drivers are far more numerous that perhaps thought and the sim aspect is crying for attention.

    Resources Vs Wishes .... obviously !

    World of Trucks is intriguing but again it is long term I fear.

    ATS is looking pretty awesome by the way and I hope that, as suggested, ATS addresses the simulator enthusiasts expectations a lot more that ETS2 can today.

    1. There is hope. They made it to Moscow already. In the meantime, you Japanese should build a tunnel to Korea, so when SCS is ready, there will be no problem to attach Japan to the rest of the Map! Oh, just imagine, Lisbon-Osaka by truck...via Teheran, Kabul (Karakorum highway!), Katmandu, Taipeh....

  56. i am big fan of your game (Euro truck simulator 2). I just have a request that kindly update the trucks and add new truck models. along with this add dangerous driving roads to euro truck simulator 2 like we have in​ scania. If while driving on dangerous driving road truck goes off the road (fell from mountain) then the driver will have to pay penalty & have have to start that job again.

  66. They hope end of winter/begining of sring for Scandinavia dlc. They make the DAF euro 6 in one year. They announced the Actros MP4 just before last easter. I predict Scandinavia and Actros MP4 out for this Easter.

  70. The Ferry Problem - here are my two cents:

    I would try to solve the abuse scenario like this:

    For calculating the route on the map, I'd introduce a new boolean variable, say Customer_pays_ferry= (true;false). The program needs to check whether there is a completely landbased alternative, or one that makes as little usage of ferries as possible and set this value accordingly for the first ferry on the route (thereby eliminating the necessity of having this variable for each crossing on the way!). If the variable returns true, then the time and distance calculation is to be based on that route to make sure the player will be able to make it in time. The fee for the ferry will not be substracted from the player's account, because it was booked and payed for by the customer. For the shortcut however, I'd make the ferry crossings so expensive that it means a real sacrifice for the player - and still an option if he or she is late. Experience points are still only granted for the rubber spread on the road, not for the miles sleeping on a ferry.

    Example:
    Let's assume, we got a real short hop from Calais to Dover. The Chunnel use (or the ferry use for heavy traffic, which is not allowed on the train) is inevitable, so business as usual. The customer has approved the use and payed for the ferry, variable returns true.

    Now let's assume you're going from Esbjerg in Denmark to Aberdeen in Scotland. The shortest route would be to take the ferry in Esbjerg to Newcastle upon Tyne, then proceed north. But the long way which is the one the customer wants you to use and pays for (we don't care, why: the customer is king!), would be down to Germany, through the lovely Netherlands and then either via Chunnel or Ferry to the Island. So when the program calculates the route, the Esbjerg Ferry would be the longest ferry run, so the variable would return false for this ferry (and all ferries that would appear after this first along this route, if there were any). On the alternative route, there is the channel crossing Calais-Dover as the shortest and inevitable, variable returns true. It also returns false for a hypothetical Calais-Newcastle. You could use the latter if you are late, but then you need to pay it from your own pocket as the player.

    Realistic ferry departures: With the primary problem resolved as described, there's no real need to address the problem of unrealistically being served on arrival, but if you want to take this pain on you, here's my suggestion:

    In route calculation, calculate the estimated time of arrival at the ferry the same way as you would for the final destination, and make this time a fixed and booked time for the ferry depature. Notify the player in the map menue when he is supposed to board the ferry. The player will be early in most cases, but the ferry still departs at the fixed time. If he is late however, the next one will go say two hours later. That would take care of the realism. If that still is not realistic enough, round the ferry departure time to the next half hour, and then realizm is served as much as possible without troubling the game calculations too much.

    Let me finish this post with a heartfelt děkuju mnohokrát for your good work and for the fact you allowed us to take a sneek peek into your everyday life. It's got a nice touch to be able to associate some faces and real people to the letters SCS, as well as this stylish kind of office you got. As usual, don't let your actions be guided by the impatient and ever-demanding, because when you think back to ETS (1) times when nobody knew this little venture in Praha, when you think back about the graphics and the gameplay of this Embryo of ETS2 and when you recall the prognoses that were made about the potential of a "boring game" like this that we (older) simmers loved so much to play and logged Millions of kilometers with, you will have to see you took the right ferries and the right highways at the right pace, and you've come amazingly far.

I would like to say that i have seen the video of ATS and it is completely beautiful and amazing hard work but please see every place in streets right because interstates don't have intersections of crossing roads, there is always a exit that makes the freeway flow smooth and the cars go different directions off the exit as well.another thing when you head off or on the freeway there are light poles when entering or about to exit the freeway also there's suppose to be exit signs and signs that tell you when the lane merges with the freeway please change this there is no one way sign on American freeways at all ,and there needs to be more traffic on the freeway i live and California i go all over the state i know how the freeway is here .please i hope you listen to this and do this stuff thank you i just want California and united states looking right please.

  74. It looks great from what I have seen. I did not see any Cab-Over ( Cab is over the engine ) trucks, all I seen was conventional ( Engine is in front of the cab ) trucks. My question is this: Will there be a choice of both Cab-Over and Conventional trucks?

    Plus I live in America and there is a lot of truck brands, Mack, International, Freightliner, White, Ford, Volvo, Marmon, Western Star, Autocar, Peterbilt and Kenworth.

    Also in the state of Texas, the Highway Patrol have SUV's that do weight and measures. They can pull over a Semi truck and have them drive over portable scales at any given time, I know this cause my dad drove Semi trucks for 53 years straight, open road coast to coast.

      In fact there is 4 brands in USA (less than EU) in USA and the half is European. Cheers.

  75. Очень-хорошие видео ролики. Я вот подумал, что Вашим играм (движку) не хватает эффектов, хорошего дождя на дороге и т.д. Вам надо или свой движок улучшать или приобрести сторонней компании! Представляю как бы выглядела ATS и ETS 2 на движке CryEngine, UnrealEngine 4 или ещё каком-нибудь. Было бы очень классно.

  76. I notice that all the trucks used in the American Truck Simulator video had (e)Toll devices. Does this mean the toll gets paid automatically without having to stop? That would be awesome if they did. :)

  78. different engine make this game genuine if people have played ets 2 with American trucks and trailers is going to be the same like playing ets 2 overall is going to be waste of money because of ets 2 same engine core

    You could make a free DLC on ETS2 with ATS trucks, so we would be able to try a little bit of ATS before it gets completely ready.
