ETS 2 & Oculus Rift

We have been experimenting with Oculus Rift for a few days, and Euro Truck Simulator 2 is now mostly working correctly with it.

Looking around the cabin freely is incredible, it almost feels like being in there!

The experience cannot be really presented with a screenshot, you have to wear the device to actually appreciate how revolutionary it is. It's not perfect, but it's a promise of great things to come for sure.

  8. So this is what you are working on while we wait for game patch/expansions? Thanks SCS, very nice.

  9. This is great great news.
Hey Pavel, you know how much I believe in this new technology!
Unfortunately, we mere mortals, who knows how much we have to wait?
In any case I am very happy that you had the desire to experiment this device.
Good fun and good work. I envy you very :)

  13. How this will damage your eye sight since is way to close to the eyes. The light is!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Proximity to an EM source isn't what's damaging, it's the intensity. Given that the oculus is enclosed, you can lower intensity more than you would have to in a well lit room and keep the same effect as far as your perception is concerned.

      Delete
    2. Another issue with typical displays is that your eyes will be focused on the screen at a fixed distance for extended periods of time. The Rift's lenses allow your eyes to focus on objects within the game in a natural manner, so theoretically, it will be a lot easier on your eyes than whatever monitor you're using right now.

  18. It's been 3 months since last patch was released. It's a quarter of a year! SCS we need some big update this spring. At least release new patch with Iveco, please.

  19. Nice to see that not all SCS employees got kidnapped by aliens and they give some news...

Anyway, I think this sort of technology can't be very good for your eyes... Nor will it be affordable in the first few years.

So this news is pretty useless... If those glasses were available already this would be good news, but right now its like you're wasting your time...

    1. Wasting time?
The thing is, even if the people developing occulus rift are doing some things, the main reason VR and headset technologies have failed in the past is because no developers helped it move along. This is great news for people who care about the Occulus rifts future, because if devs didn't do this, we may never see the rift truly commercialized.

      http://www.geteyesmart.org/eyesmart/ask/questions/q090413b.cfm

I personally like that they're testing it out, I've been thinking about that thing quite a bit this past month myself, so I'm glad to see I'm not alone doing so. Best thing about the oculus is we won't have to waste more cash on 1080p or 1440p screens soon (or 3D screens for that matter), and given that this device is much closer to our eyes, it won't need as high a resolution, thus lightening the load on our gfx cards a bit, hopefully. :)

      Delete
    3. Actually you need high resolution for the HMD. The resolution of the devkit (640x800 per eye) is very low given the view angles and the distortion which needs to be compensated. As result you see spaces between pixels in the display and the image is very blurry.

  22. Wow these things are $1200 to buy. As a dev kit. So instead of using the money to put on expansion development they used it on a technology that's far from release. Makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. $1200 isn't that much for a company, and either way, without support from developers, this kind of technology will just fizzle away as it always has, and I don't think that should happen.

      Delete
    2. They are $300, not $1200. It makes a lot more sense to add support ahead of the consume release than to wait until afterwards!

  24. Hi all at ETS2 if possible when u do another patch or updates if pilot vehicles could be introduced in the game as when u come to intersections or some yards where u try to come out of and try to turn the tend not let u get around without catching them on ur trailer as they refuse to back up forcing u to either backing up or wiping them out as sometimes u can't back with other traffic behind u as well and by having pilot vehicles to stop traffic at a certain distance which allows u to maneuver around without hitting anyone or thing does anyone else have the same problem with this

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dunno about the pilot vehicles, since, how would they know you intend to not follow the GPS route 100%, which I sometimes do as the GPS seems to prefer shortest distance over shortest time spent on roads at speed limits. But, I'd really love for AI cars to back off when I'm reversing into them, or turning across their lane when coming out of a gas station.

  28. 3DVision works perfectly. Looks brilliant in 3D with trackIR :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. can't wait for this

    ReplyDelete
  30. The reason that HD3D would be doing that is the use of the depth buffer for cheap reprojection. Assuming an inhouse compatibility patch we should be able to count on dual cameras (Or at lease something that will take account of transparent layers.) Also, I hope they give use bodies. Most people say they feel much better in VR sims if they have a virtual body. Easy on the trucker-gut though pls.

    2. Idiots... I guarantee that the Rift will be HUGE. The reason for that is because it will make games like this so much more imersive therefore making it more fun to play. No one has been able to do VR at a reasonable price ($300) until now. To be able to actually feel like you're in the Truck driving with full head tracking and real life scale to the world is game changing. Do some research before you think something is a waste if time. Maybe then you would learn something.

It will be ready when it's ready. I suspsect much more of the studios efforts are going in to the next game, and rightly so. You're already playing the best driving simulator on the market (not counting certain racing games) It also wasn't expensive for a video game, esp a game thats provided us all with so much entertainment value. 77. You always talk that you are small team that you need time and then not focus on things that want most players. Oculus? Yes but after you do the basics.
You need over 3 months to develop patch and because of that you will lose players not because you don't support Oculus.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Really? Really SCS? I'm glad your playing with your new toys but spring is almost over and I'm getting fed up waiting for you guys to release the next patch.

    ReplyDelete
  79. There have been technologies for 3D display around for many years like VR helmets. And did they ever get somewhere? No, all vanished, never heard about anymore. And same will happen to Oculus Rift. Do you really think that playing for more than 1 hour with something like Oculus Rift is possible? No, certainly not. Since that weight IS too much for keeping it longer and the closeness of the displays is a huge strain for the eyes.

I have a new 3D TV with glasses. How often did i use it ? I tried it with the examples once. Thats it. There aren't even anymore movies broadcast in 3D anymore!

SCS seems to specialize in implenting stuff that only mini-markets if at all anyone needs or will ever really use such as Linux Version, Mac Version, Oculus Rift. Congrats you are reaching at most 5% of the player base with that stuff and ignore 95% that have requested serious features and improvments in the rain. What the player base really wants is so clear and known.

I really don't understand the product policy of SCS anymore. You guys are wasting the players and your time and the market potential of your game. Instead of putting out all that fluff stuff you could have already doubled the income from ETS2 by simply putting out 2 map DLC's. Man there are map mods made with 30+ cities already. SCS hello ? Anybody at home ? Get back on the ground and start doing stuff that we really want !!! ASAP!

    1. you're right, it's much nicer to have multiplayer in the game, but the only problem is that you have got some people that are crashing deliberately (<-- you could allso call them idiots) and the second problem is that there are comming much patches, and others don't install them, for that last problem I think: make seperate 'places' (i don't know how you call that rooms/places or somthing) like one for 1.3.1 or 1.3.0 one for 1.2.5, etc.

they had the obligation to finish it after the release with putches.

  83. lack of realism (see the suggestions of users), lack of physics, lack purpose, campaign, something to make strong in time.

I give 2 of the simplest examples:

    1) the upgrade parts have only visual changes and not driving.

    2) the dirt roads and the asphalt have the same driving specifics.

and there are many other things even more essential.

  84. Oculus Rift is a toy for geeks with rich parents. How many players will buy it and use it in ETS2? 0,1%?

SCS you should evolve gameplay in ETS2. Not only driving from A to B with different trailers. I love trucking games but this is extremly boring. All your previous games had this same scheme: buy truck, drive to company, pick up a trailer, drive to the next company, job finished. I was playing like this since ETS1 and GTS and now I'm bored in ETS2. Let us buy trailers and make more complex "missions" in your games. For example. There is a job on the market to take excavator to the construction site. Task: we need to rent or buy empty low bed trailer, pick up the trailer, then go to the company, pick up the excavator, take the excavator to the construction site and leave it there, then go back and leave the trailer back if we rented, or leave it to our nearest garage if we own the trailer. If I buy low bed trailer I can take jobs for these type of cargo. If I buy reefer trailer then I can transport food. Wouldn't that be better if we could buy trailers for job offers?

    2. I absolutely agree, theirs so many things that should/could easily be added to the game with some thought. I think what you're talking about needs to be done from the business management side. This to me is where the game could really open up, and be made more interesting, and be a fantastic experience. Like you said with buying/hiring trailers. You should also have to compete with other haulage companies for contracts, make sure you have enough drivers etc to complete the contract, and actually go bust if you don't get it right, to add more challenge to the game. Their should also be delivery run style jobs. Where you pick one of your trailers up from a warehouse, and drive to cities in the area dropping goods off at certain businesses along the way, then take the trailer back again. This would especially work with the fuel tankers. Also rather than starting out in a class 1 articulated truck, you should have to earn this, and start of in ridged body trucks. This is my first SCS game. But seeing parts of ETS 1, I can't help but notice it's very similar. I think, if like you I'd been playing ETS 1, I'd be a little annoyed by it.

    3. I usually hate when someone spits on SCS, but this time I must say it's not about spitting (it only looks like that on first look), it has a point and it's definetely not about asking for some useless and/or not realistic feature. Although it would mean to rework management part of game probably from scratch, it's not task with size of multiplayer (for example). ETS2 is great, great game in many aspects, every point given by media in reviews is highly deserved, but still, there is lack of something deeper, something which could bring more passion of virtual trucking. Examples you wrote are good example where SCS could go. Maybe with ETS2, maybe with games in development. But this would be the right way, I believe.

    1. Why exactly? It just makes Mercedes look like a bunch of jerks, when every other company is on board. Especially for a company that has more to gain from getting their brand about than companies like Iveco, DAF and Scania. Since Mercedes also make consumer products.

  87. Since you are now doing a stereoscopic view pipeline to support the Rift you could use that to implement native support for HD3D and 3D vision. I just tried the latest version of the tridef drivers and it sort of works, but with severe artifacts. Native support for stereoscopic viewing would be much better.

  88. Wow so much hate, just because what is likely a few guys have spent a couple of days playing around with a new gadget. Suddenly the whole community is up in arms "RAWRRR PATCH PATCH PATCHHHH YOU SUCK!!!!" It's pretty sad. Game companies need to stay ahead with new technology for future games. Doing nothing but making free patches, isn't going to pay everyone's salary. R&D eventually pays off. Here we have a company that's made the best driving simulator game on the market, certainly the best truck driving game, promised to keep improving it for free, suddenly everyone is telling them how to run their business, and behaving like SCS owes them anything more than they bought in the first place. The game wasn't even that expensive. Personally, I paid £14.99 from it off amazon before christmas, I've certainly had more than that out of it. No wonder most game developers don't bother. The patch will be ready when it's ready. SCS isn't one guy, just remember that. They have a team of people.

    1. SCS is playing around with a device which is so not suited to the type of games they make. The point is they created a game which isn't finished, released it and just keep making up crap blogs about stuff that shouldn't even be spoken of. This is a $300 device to do what to a game which honestly isn't the best of graphics to begin with. You may have paid 14.99 but lots of people paid over $30 for an unfinished game. Don't go on about free patches, I would happily pay for new patches, But like everyone we are fed up with the useless infomation from SCS which has no reference to there games.

    2. LMAO Theres nothing unfinished about ETS2 adnd the graphics are good in the game. Its just people like you thats ruin this blog with nonsense posts like that. The Ocolus rift is very suited to this game. Saying its not suited to this game is like saying that the Asetto Corsa Devs and Project Cars Devs are wasting their time with Ocolus Rift too.

Every blog post I have seen by them too has reference to their games. You are just turning a blind eye and thinking thbey are not because you want the patch and DLC twelve months ago before the game was released.

    3. steve farrell, you are not objective. Maybe Oculus is good but for small number of player is useful.
Do you think that is from 7th february untill 9th of may is not too long for some changes?
I don't care what they write here but if they say that will develop something in decent time then they need to do that.
It's not problem they develop to Oculus, it's problem that they do angry morst of they players.

    4. I agree mate. Steve doesn't seem to really have any idea, I work in the communications Industry and I know what SCS should and shouldn't be doing. Its sad SCS just keeps wasting time on things which are not suited to there type of game. Its like an airline pilot wearing 3d glasses because he thinks it will make the cockpit look better. Its just not good for business and sadly SCS will become one of those game companies that close because they can't keep customers.

      Delete
    5. I do have an Idea how programming works. I agree that some of their communications are wrong , but the expectations of a lot of these people are way too high for such a small development team. I am sure that most of the complainers never tried programming any type of software in their life , because if they did they would understand that its not as simple to patch bugs and add new things to a game as they think.

It's nice to try new experiments, but most gotten us but would like information about the next patch, DLC, or as to the project EuroCoachSimulator. I'm not saying that this experiment is bad or useless, but it would be better to pay more bugs in the game (such as wrong address intersection - exit the motorway A15 towards the Channel Tunnel to Calais, Lille - there are very difficult to maneuver with oversized, and the normal load - these intersections is a lot on the map ... etc), or a new model trucks in the game ....
    Good luck

  90. -more configurations for the trucks

-not only visual effects of the parts but effect the trucks feeling and handling(for us), and the drivers(npc) performance.

    -aging of the truck

-realistic way & time of changing tires, oil and service

-wind effect, that pushes the truck AND makes dust from the near fields

    -seasons circle (winter,spring,....)

-in the very cold days steamy/vapor windshield that have to open the heat to remove it and perhaps stay some steam/vapor at the peripheral of the windshield

-(much)more roads with high elevation to increase the challenge

-(much)more dirt/offroad roads, with dust at summer made by the wind or the passing cars, and mud at winter or after rain that makes difficult and slippery the road

-and of course high elevation dirt roads

-slippery roads by rain or ice or mud

    -add some sort of missions

-change the way jobs are taken

-game is repeated and ends up becoming boring easily very, very easy. FIND a way to change that.

-add a learning mode. how to turn at difficult locations, going backwards....

-also feeling and effection of the anomalies, holes, rocks of the road.

-random and sudden accidents or constructions at road during the trip that makes you find alternative route

-random malfunctions due to an old truck (or not).

-overheating the brakes, affecting braking or not stopping at all.

    -overheating of the engine.

    -more varieties of roads

    1. (-wind effect, that pushes the truck AND makes dust from the near fields) = these "pushes" I don't just a push, I mean something that effects the driving style of the gamer.

      easy push
      medium push
      strong push
      and very strong push

all of the above to make the gamer slow down the speed or even go extremely slow.

PS- this is realism. the dust also makes slow down and can't see. the ice. THE ELEVATION OF THE ROAD. and many others

    2. lubricant leak

      cooling fluid leak

      flat tires

      blocks on the road

the job taking method has to change from its root. who trucker does that? time for food, time for sleep, time for bathroom. TIME for his HOME. can't be all the time at trips. can't take the one city after the other.

contracts. beat a company an other company

    2. Thing is, from ETS1 through GTS and UKTS to ETS2, game starts to be boring after some trips, I must left the game for few days (or play with editor) to have right taste to continue. But this never happened with previous titles. I remember I started playing PTTM in the evening and after while I wondered it's morning and I had to go to work sleepy. :-D The concept is absolutely the same, A to B, A to B. How it comes? Is it possible that thigs like more deep management, useless, but still present CB, actual police and other things makes game so much more enjoyable? Maybe. Very likey, but still maybe. Maybe it's because I'm too familiar with Europe that I can't enjoy given gaming world too much, I know it's far from reality; but I've never been in America, so although I know it, I don't care it's not real environment too and enjoy it with ease. Or it's because combination of both things.

It would be interesting if some guy from America told us how he feels about gaming worlds in 18WoS and in European-based titles.

  101. I understand that SCS must look to the future, otherwise, when they look around they can be obsolet.

For me, the question is: why look to the future, if they don´,t take care of the present, if they don´t finish promises from the past.

I think this is the biggest problem in here: too many promises and good intentions of doing everything, but in fact, time goes by and almost nothing is really done.

So much efforts to enter the STEAM... and what now? they don´t sell dreams, they sell games. Good ones or bad ones? doesn´t matter, it´s sales, it´s making money.

At this time i believe SCS could have launched 2 or 3 small DLC´s and costumers would be much more satisfied at this time.

    Respect and cheers to all

apart of the driving realism improvement because realism is now at 20%

businesses management can be done. npc drivers that cause problems, contacts that can be broke for some resons, such as delay or damaged product OR better prices from rival companies.

also rival companies can be shown to the map and their spread to the world too.
