Introducing the Concept of World of Trucks Time

Greetings! Today we'd like to cover a design-oriented topic relevant for the upcoming Euro Truck Simulator 2 Update 1.22.

After quite a few rounds of private beta tests and fixes, we are getting close to releasing the first Open Beta of the update to Steam. Along with the release of the Beta, we will roll out the Contracts feature on World of Trucks (as already covered earlier on our blog).


Once you'll run the new version of the game, you will see that we have been through a slight modification of the main user interface "desktop" screen. We have redesigned the job info widget - the element on top of the screen showing you information about your current assignment.

With the addition of World of Trucks Contracts, we now need to provide the player with enough information on the jobs received this way as well as on the regular Freight Market or Quick Jobs supplied by the standard game economy.


In fact, the player can be assigned both type of jobs in parallel. The new Contracts are actually happening "online" - the game communicates with the back-end servers frequently to update the system on each player's vehicle position and situation. Network connections though can be shaky, and the player should also be able to take a break from a delivery easily taking two-hours in real time, so we need an ability to interrupt a Contract (save the player's progress) and resume it later. But the next day, the player may be offline, or just decide to go for a quick normal delivery before resuming the Contract job. So in principle we need to make sure that there can be two concurrent job assignments.


With Contracts (and the fact that they are the first step towards more complex features), we have also faced a new game design challenge - the concept of time in the game. As of now, you were used to the accelerated Game Time (sometimes shortened in the game as G.T.). It's the clock used for the standard-game day cycle, accelerated so that 24 game-time hours take approximately 72 real minutes. We are not going to change the flow of time in regular game, but for Contracts, we are going to introduce a new clock - World of Trucks Time  (you may see it shortened in the game as "WOTR Time", or "W.T."

World of Trucks Time is based on Coordinated Universal Time, a real-world "clock" where 24 hours takes no less then real 24 hours to complete. We use it to synchronize all World of Trucks features - jobs, future economy and player interactions, and upcoming online activities. It is what the servers use internally, but we have decided to also make it visible for the players, so that they can understand what the delivery deadlines are etc. So you will encounter World of Trucks Time immediately when taking your first World of Trucks Contract.


All World of Trucks jobs will be based only WOTR Time limit to complete. Right now during the beta, while we are stress-testing our server infrastructure and sorting out potential bugs, the WOTR Time for job completion will be fixed to only several hours for any job. Once we feel the servers are working as intended even under load, we will further increase the precision of tracking and also have Contracts with a wider range of time limits for enhanced gameplay experience.

  3. What will be the motivation to use this? I can't see any...Totally useless feature...And for this we are waiting so long? Dear SCS, some other big company like EA or Activision should make their own truck sim game, so you could feel breath of competition...Because you invent useless things. What about real driver position? Now we feel driving a sports car, not a truck, because of the steering wheel in front of our eyes..What about seasons? What about wires, so we could visibly connect trailer and back of the truck? What about more inteligent sound? (we are in interior cam, the engine is turned off, but we do not hear any environment from the outside)...I could tell you more and more useful ideas...
    I guess way of developing your ETS 2 is not mine at all...Perhaps it is time to say goodbye to you? :(

    9. I think ETS2 is a good game, way better than some of the other truck simulators I have seen. But there is always room for improvement. Some of the ideas here are good. Mine would be to have more lighting options for night driving because the current options are inadequate. And a brighter dashboard backlight wouldn't go astray either

    10. The artwork is higher, especially regarding those appointments. From the point of view of the program, I think not really imaginal work Artificial details. It is an immense work .. It's true, I want the vehicle needs water, the engine warm up the futility, that we had to control our march to ellos.etc mechanical varied topics as in the case realidad..Pero hoy.Sinceramente of trucks, do not have these problems on the road .. So I feel that you refer to the classic experience of driving a truck, old truck, with limitations, requiring all, they do not have the power always available with infinite etc .. I personally have always said that "The older vehicles are much more interesting for certain games" But that does not mean the huge demand for new models, where logic is very formal topic .. In a road before, with paved, in Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, with shortcuts, with optional roads, landslides, crazy on the road, drunk, animals ... etc .. In this context we should make a game like that you raise with things wonderfully complex and difficult details

    12. Michael, you clearly don´t know the scale of the map won´t support it and also ETA time is in equivalent with that you holds a speed on 60 km/h or 40 mph. So if they want to change it then they must rescale the whole map which will take an eternity so it will not change

    1. How can you get this as an multiplayer mode? It just tells you that if you are in a VTC that are connected to world of trucks website then the boss will be able to set cargoes to you and you will be able to take those loads in parallell with your in-game loads.

  8. I'm going to be honest, this is the first feature I think is a real miss and mistake from SCS.
    Mixing real world time with accelerated time just muddles the simulation and immersion factor. ETS 2 is nice because it's self contained and you can play it offline, I don't like the idea of Contracts being the start of a lot of online-only features. But most of all...I think routes are fine as is...could we instead focus on some other critical, game changing feature like seasonal weather?

      At the moment, am I right in thinking that you don't have to use it? What I want to see is more development within the game (more routes, better scenery, more loads) because that is why I play the game.

    4. Totally agree with dinosaurcowboys.com. I don't see any incentive to use these contracts. I can only play at night and driving only at night would suck. You kmow what would be better? Custom jobs. Many times I want to travel to an unknown city and there isn't any jobs that go there.

  11. So if I understand this is only for people who play online games, and have ordinary players anything about it !

    SCS would be better able to make a feature zoal we were used to in ETS1 that the combination had more turning points. Increasingly, we need to know that this is not possible in ETS2. So in the past with the older software was possible, but now we go with the times can not.

    ETS2 in the beginning was fun, but see more and more things to come where I get many question marks. Ben by now already stopped skinning.

This is the first big step foward, is the futuere we´ll be able to have a virtual company, like a "guild" on a MMO, so players will join the company and do works, que company will grow up and so on, this its amazing feature, the first step to a multplayer interaction. thanks a lot SCS, it´ll revitalize the game experience.

  18. Suggesting gameplay improvement ideas to SCS ETS2 developers:

    1. Managing levelled up drivers

    In the later stages of the game, when there are lots of hired drivers, it is difficult to keep track of the messages flood while driving and also after sleep or ferry travelling! With the introduction of a notebook, the managing part of the game wouldn't disturb the driving part. It would also make possible to conveniently catch up with the news after sleep and ferry travelling.

    When In the route advisor a new message appears about the driver's job, there could be a button (num5 for example) which when pressed opens directly the profile page of the particular driver. If that button is pressed while there are no active incomming messages, it should open a notebook with the latest 50 or 100 incomming messages, with the option to "mark the message as read".

    In the drivers menu and especially in the recruitment agency menu, an option would be useful to sort the drivers not by rating but by achieved skill level (x/36), since driver ratings can be misleading.

    2. Calculating profit via different routes, notably when using train or boat.

    GPS Route editing should also be functional in the Job Market menu, with immediate price (profit) per distance calculation.

    Beside the price and distance of the ferry (in the jobs menu), there should also be the time which the ferry trip takes.

    3. Fatigue simulation and sleep management should be a bit more complex, allowing the player to determine how much he sleeps.

  27. Are tyres and this online feature the only thing we can expect in update 1.22? If that's the case, I am thoroughly disappointed. What about the implementation of the new MAN TGX Euro 6 for instance? That would be way more useful than this. We wait so long and we only get some minor and trivial improvements? It's really getting boring.. I can only hope that in update 1.23 we can anticipate more interesting stuff. Nevertheless, by the time ATS comes out I will abandon Ets2 completely.

    - All europe map
    - More support for multiplayer these guys make an excelent job you sell more copies of ETS2 of their duty.

  31. useless since it is not MULTIPLAYER !!! anyway, I hate multiplayer also, I wish Co-OP for this game (max 8 friends on the map, full AI & Co....)
    Couldn't they wait with this shit until they have a real thing, not full us with useless garbage?..

    Real Time would be nice, too, but leads to MISUNDERSTANDINGS.... since the accelerated time remains in the other 2 forms of gameplay.

    I wait with lot of interest some real stuff,
    like tandems / dual trailers... anything like that....
    reworked economy,
    fixing the AI company drivers (prevent always garage/destinations/garage)
    ANDDD Multiple Point Deliveries !!!!

This sounds like a great idea, the different time element might be a problem initially but, like everything else we should be able to adapt to it, and it also makes sense for a few other reasons like, fully utilising World of Trucks, the possibility of multiplayer in the future(that I am looking forward to) and of course possibly integrating ATS in some way at a much later date, I really like how things are progressing, keep up the great work

    And why is AMD Crossfire still not working since 1.6. (Error on truck mirror unless on low quality) I have almost 900 hours on this game.

      This game is very poorly optimized and no matter what you will do, it will never go above 60ps. Which makes me think...

      I wonder how do people play this game on 120Hz and 144Hz monitors ???

      Does SCS not have any 120Hz or 140 Hz monitor in their offices ??? What do they think about how the game looks and feels at the brink of 2016 ?

  47. That Contracts feature looks totally useless, I dont need this. I wanna see my hundred of hired drivers in my hundred of trucks on the roads - where are they hiding? They all driving white Ivecos for 88790 @ 310hp and able to make perfect urgent deliveries of 20+ tons trailers. I wanna see those heroes! Let me see them!!!

    But we need more realism in the game.
    For instance: Seasons, a sound of trucks more real(because this actually sounds not is real - they not give us the feeling of a heavy truck) etc.

  55. Great addition to the game, the first steps maybe into making this game into a MMO or at least have some multiplayer interactions.
    That being said, although i really appreciate new stuff being added to the game, this new feature doesnt do much for the game future or appeal. Why ?
    The game has been out for 3 years now and is running on a 8 year old engine, so for those that have played this game from its release all this new features are short lived because of some major flaws:
    - ETS2 needs a major graphical overhaul. Yes Scandinavia is a bit better but after driving it all it has soon lost its appeal. As for the rest of the map it looks like it belongs to a 2010 game imo. Any new features to this game will be short lived and kind of point less for ETS2 as i am sure after ATS realease, people will slowly forget all about ETS2.
    As i said ETS2 requires a major graphical overhaul for its continuation. It needs seasons, better weather effect, better rain/snow ( there are no puddles forming on the road or on the side of the road), the rain it self is very unrealistic. Water drops are not present on the outside of the truck/trailer, we can see water drops on the windshield from in-cab view, but as soon as you go on the outside view the water drops disappear. Why the trucks never get dirty ??? Why is there no exhaust fumes coming out from the trucks ??? The trucks/trailers need to look, feel and sound heavy.
    We need better interiors as most of the driving is done from that position and surprisingly enough the first DLC for it came after 3 years... Why cant we have realistic interior, laser scanned interior ??? Just take a look at Assetto Corsa, laser scanned cars and tracks. I am not saying that we should have laser scanned roads as that would be impossible, but at least have the real interiors for the trucks.
    I know all this features are probabily very difficult or even impossible to implement on ETS2 old engine. So i guess the solution would be a new game on a new engine( ATS its not the answer because form what i have seen its a copy-paste from ETS2, same old graphics, same stupid AI, same non-existing economy). So this you are planing to sell us until 2020 ???
    - ETS2 needs a better economy model. What is the point gaining millions of euros if you can not buy anything with it??? What is the point of hiring all the drivers if you never see them in the traffic. Here is an idea, why not allowing us to create our company logo and have it on our trailers and trucks ? And while we are here why not display it on the AI trucks/trailers? The frequency that our logo would appear in the traffic would depend on the amount of drivers we have hired. Even though it wouldnt match with jobs our drivers take, at least seeing your logo in traffic would give a better feel to the game. Why cant we own our own trailer like in 18WOS ?
    - ETS2 needs better AI and multiplayer platform with competing economy mode. The AI has been a problem for ETS2 from its release and after 3 years it is still to be addressed. Why there is no multiplayer from SCS ? A multiplayer where we could compete to whom has a better trucking company, who has the better drivers, who completes the most jobs, who makes more profit and so on....

  57. Indeed my colleague Michael Krylov's right, we all garages transformed into master, all drivers available at the best possible Truck fleet for using padrãol painting at all but we never see them or find one of our trucks on the roads ?? This is inconsistent.

  59. I agree with you. We have to ask attention into the simulator, climate, seasons, loading, hauling, lighting in the cabin, sound into it because we seem to be sealed within it, see our motrista and trucks on the road and more routes and scenarios.

  60. The problem is that SCS is moving very slow and i cant understand why...
    2x map expansions, 4 new trucks and some useless dlc's in 3 years...
    After looking at all the content that the gaming community has released, i wonder what are those employees at SCS doing ???
    3 years and counting and we still dont have all of Europe in ETS2.

    ATS maybe will come out next year( i mean California for ATS ) and probably Nevada or Arizona will follow shortly as a DLC for maybe 19usd. So the plan for SCS copy-paste ETS2, make a new map, add some new trucks and BAM ! sell it as a brand new game( still fine their are not the first or the last to do this,the only difference is that SCS doesnt have a solid base to do it from, they are selling us and old, obsolete and non-optimized engine )
    So what the other 49states of US alone( as i dont think they are going to include Canada or Mexico in the game ) will come out as a DLC ???
    Owning all of ATS would cost us maybe around 1000usd, that without other useless dlc's...?
    And if that so... How long it will take them to release all of US ??? Seeing the pace for ETS2 expansion, i would say maybe 49 years...

They gonna milk us as much possible as till 2020 with crap engine old 8-10 years old... They're moving realllly slooow..... Look at OMSI Bus Simulator.. The game been made from only 15 people... It has bad graphics, enviroments... BUT, its has real sounds... Engine sound, braking, air noise, suspension sounds... all is real.... You can open our window, open door, make own route to drive.. 10 different busses to choose to drive.. I think SCS is getting more greedy and greedy nowdays... Sad.. sorry my english is not perfect

    2. ETS2 is far from simulator.. Its a simarcade... Truck turning is like van.. Sounds are like electric bicycle.. Doesn't sound like a heavy truck loaded behind 20 tones.
      Wheel rotation is same as my Passat B5... so truck feel is missed

  63. I agree with you, ceiling spotlight, instead of helping, ends up messing up by not having a color film to soften. It takes focus all tablets. And there should be a shortcut to light it directly on the steering wheel or keyboard just for her.

  64. Only means would give us trailers station for truck cleaning, as is always impeccable, a mechanic workshops to master, so could afford his proficional improvement, more options in the menu truck as motor, gear, et'cetera axis.

  68. I agree that there are problems that can be solved quickly. But in general the ETS2 is a exelente simulator. The bad in the cabin is the lack of lighting, as its sealing, leaving us isolated from all sound around to stand out the engine noise, very high flash and clean glass, the rest only if we leave the cabin to hear the rays, thunder, businas, et'cetera.

    1. When you say... "haters going to hate"... that immediately sounds to me like you're referring to a group of people trying to "boycott" ETS2. Or encourage, in some way, the game's failure. Sorry, but I don't get that impression.

      Not all complaints are born of hatred. Some complaints are born of one's passion for something, or someone, they care about.....

      ..... when a parent is complaining about their child's bad grades in school, that doesn't mean the parent hates the child. The parent is likely passionate about seeing their child succeed, while feeling a tad bit frustrated to see so much potential being wasted.

      When I read the complaints here on the blog pages, I don't get the impression that people are haters of the game.... or of SCS. In fact, I get the opposite impression. People seem very passionate about the ETS2 game.... and tend to get a bit frustrated to see that the game is not providing them the level of success they feel the game could be enjoying.

      Perhaps, you should pay a little less attention to "what" people are saying... and a little more attention to .... "why" ... they are saying it. If you are going to be childish enough to label someone as a "hater", then be mature enough at the same time, to explain "why" they are hating.

      Or, read a book on Psychology, and learn how to stop labeling people in the first place.

    4. I do agree with you MUZICKMAGE, but you've got to admit some people, (fair enough, a small minority), do write comments that just complain and give no reason why - they give no alternative. It's easy to write that something's 'shit', 'useless', or a 'waste of time', but when they have nothing to offer, a way to actually improve the game, I can see where Carlo is coming from. You can't take those people's opinions seriously. I completely agree with Qbol that constructive criticism is the way to go about it.

  72. Realmente há momentos que noto certa violência no vocabulário de uma minoria dos usuários deste blog. Como muitas críticas desnecessárias. Quem conhece um pouco de informática, sabe que por trás de cada melhoria em um programa, há uma série de comandos que devem ser conectados, e nem sempre se consegue isso rapidamente. É obvio que desejamos que o ETS2 se destaque, mantendo a liderança sobre os demais, por isso de certas solicitações continuas que fazemos; como eu mesmo faço, porque passo horas em meu caminhão. Criticar destrutivamente algo que esta sendo criado para nosso lazer como entretenimento, mostra o nível de seu status.

  73. I don't like it. MMO features is what this sim doesn't need. It is an awesome SP game. Let's leave it at that. The last thing I want is a required online connection to play this game. What this sim needs is seasons, more routes, more trucks, more trailers, dirt! (I want to have a dirty truck after a long trip) and better company management. I know a lot of people like MP features, but please keep it separate from the SP game.

  74. Other problem of SCS is: Anything in the game is one DLC(and expensive)... We want the items of the cab interior for free... The SCS is very capitalist... Ah, our drivers truckers in the road... more realism!!!

    1. I understand the cost but SCS seem focus on create good quaility games and DLC. How can the can keeo business going if we only buy Game cost. And why do they need keep DLC going if they cant make profit to keep it going. Example consle games.Why not we can recieve their DLC or mods. They just focus create game then move on new game and cost one game average 40 to 60 bucks with no add on options. I give full respect to SCS willing keep focus on one game longas they can make profit until they cant keep it going. then it will fade away... Therefore one game cost are good deal and able add new DLC for decent cost to keep one game interesting long peroid. It is my option.

    2. Normally I just ignore posts like yours. I have to ask though; what makes you feel "entitled" to receive for free the labors of others? SCS employees work hard to bring quality entertainment to the masses. Shouldn't they be rewarded for those labors? Next, the cost of the game and the DLC's is very reasonable.
      A capitalist society, running on the free market principle is the best system to date, it drives innovation and encourages research into new products making our lives much better.

  75. Federico Astica agree with you, I am against the MP, but between playing it and the Steam much difference. I prefer the challenges of the competitive game that are far more exciting than the MP who is full of mods that litter the game, besides the already mentioned: (cabin light, sound around us into the cabin, power wash my truck after a trip, for it made all my master garages, waiting for trailers, mechanical, wash stand, more abrutalhar climate, seeing I go on stage 9 probability of rain to have a little more excitement, the seasons as we have time zone and positioned sun, more charges, combined loads) if that was provided, I doubt there was another simulator better than this. We really need not require, but constantly impose our ideas so that one day, who knows, might note them. Big hug colleagues.

  78. I like this update, of course are there improvements to make.
    I would like to see steerable trailers.
    But the people that say that SCS are money grabbers are not right in the head.
    ETS2 is one of the cheapest sim around.
    For example take a look at trainsimulator the dlc is very expensive.
    I still like this games very much, so keep up the good work SCS.

  79. SCS did awesome work. Keep up the work. There are some my desire for SCS design the addition items.

    1 - When I hire the driver and I want able contract one company to keep driver work with one company. ( like steel of wheels.) But when company have available contract. Company email the contractors.

    2- I would like able get out of truck and look around. It will be sweet. Proably able lock the trailer and hook hoses.

    3- Please set 4 seasons. I will love to see what seasons like at Europe.

    4- At my garage. I would like able park trucks in lot and I can walk around and pick one at garage. Example - 5 men max per garage but able store 8 trucks in lot. That way I can switch trucks as each company contact haul types.

  90. Since ETS2 is getting reputation in the field of haulage simulation, I think it's high time that you got licenses from some well-known trailer brands and developed real semitrailers. Besides, just like some others said before, the players should be able to purchase their own trailers. What in the game we are running now is just like a tractor leasing company rather than a logistics company. That's the very thing which makes me unhappy about the game. And don't forget the tandem trucks ;) So the wish list is long, but I don't expect that you can complete it all at once - that's apparently also impossible - What I hope is that you can make progresses, however little they are, in the right direction.

    1. Great ideas!! If those would be implemented we would be all grateful. However, I doubt whether SCS is going in the right direction. Apart from releasing two DLC's in a time span of two years and some trivial paintjobs, all I can say is that SCS has run out of ideas and without the modding community the game wouldn't have made it so far. The developers don't seem to have the motivation to improve the game. Maybe all those ideas will be implemented in 2020 or never. Ets2 can NOT be called a simulation game, but an arcade driving game. Unrealistic motorway exits, horrible AI drivers, no seasons, no physical damage to the truck, too less customization options, no gigaliner, each city looks identical. I wonder what they have done these three years!! At least ATS looks great so far. I hope SCS takes all this into consideration ' cause it's vital for the further on existence of the game!!!!

Scs guys. 24Hr real time will be a pain. and it will take us the players a lot of time to do stuffs, hence this feature won't be used. take for example a 4 days job, how log will it take to a guy that only plays a few hours a day?? hence, it will use normal jobs.... instead of this, please add a feature to log the offline jobs and dashboard and company manager like triplogger or etsdata tried to do.

    2. Orders WOT should be allocated in the city in which we find ourselves , not in the order in which last finished and we teleports
    I do not like it, after that a good job of that so on. Maybe you add the division of tanker trailers example , oversize, built-up , etc.
    and for a long time I am waiting for these reflective tape on trailers behind the contour jail

  100. well its all good stuff that scs roll out, i am not to sure about paint jobs on tyres because in real life you just don't see lorrys/ trucks with fancy paint work on rubber tyres anyways its all good fun. i think to make things more real it would be nice if scs could make the trucks more weathered, lets have some dirt and rust.

  103. Please, if you ever think of doing some online multiplayer with your truck games, take in consideration the way it is implemented into the APB Reloaded game with minor changes so it will apply the best into the game.

    There should be 2 "continue" buttons: "Continue (single player)" and "Continue (multiplayer)"

    - If the profile doesn't have a personal truck, when clicking the "Continue (multiplayer)" button, an UI window will appear saying: "You can access the multiplayer after you have purchased your first truck in single player"

    - If the profile has already a personal truck, when pressing the "Continue (multiplayer)" button an UI window will appear saying: "All unofficial mods which alter the map, weather or traffic will be disabled but they will remain untouched when switching to single player. Continue? Yes / No "

    - After selecting Yes in the previous window, a new window will appear saying "Choose your traffic density: low traffic, medium traffic, heavy traffic"

    - After selecting the traffic density, a new window will appear showing all the available map instances for the selected traffic density.
    The server will create a new copy of the map when the population limit is
    reached. The new window will show the map numbers - 1,2,3 and other info like this: population 25/100 or 79/100 or 15/100.
    The information about the map instance population will be shown in-game too on the route adviser so the players will know if the map is full or almost empty if they want too choose a different map instance.

    Another features i would like to see both in single player and multiplayer
    - customization of the company logo ( take a look at the guild emblems customization in Guild Wars 2)
    - purchase and customize trailers for your company
    - company trucks and trailers seen in traffic as an add-on or a simple re-skin of exiting traffic trucks
    - player manes / company names should be seen in the route adviser while passing by them and NOT above the trucks. If they are above the trucks there should be an option to hide them
