American Truck Simulator Release Clarifications

We are snowed-in by a ton of questions and requests for clarification from fans, and it will be best to respond to them once here in an official statement rather than trying to reply to every e-mail.

American Truck Simulator Price

We cannot dictate the prices for the box edition in retail channels, we can only suggest recommended price (we could get prosecuted for price fixing otherwise), but for your reference, these are the prices that will appear on Steam when the game is cleared for release: $19.99, £14.99, 19,99€, CHF 19.99, 1499 pуб., R$ 79,00, ¥ 2,299, 179,00 kr, Rp 249 999, RM84.00, P899.95, S$26.95, ฿699.00, ₩ 24,000, 59,00 TL, 459₴, Mex$ 349.99, CDN$ 28.99, A$ 28.99, NZ$ 29.99, ¥ 125, ₹ 1,249, CLP$ 14.500, S/.64.95, COL$ 62.000, R 325.00, HK$ 149.00, NT$ 649, 74.00 SR, 72.00 AED.

Official Support only for 64-bit Operating Systems

To make sure that we don't have to make compromises down the line, stuck forever with a guarantee to support a build of the game with 32-bit limitations, we have decided to officially only support 64-bit Windows/Linux/Mac. There are some performance benefits too, but most importantly this will allow us to cross the 2 GB barrier for in-game assets when we need to, without worrying about how to work around the limitations of addressable memory on a 32-bit system.

However, we are receiving a lot of requests from players stuck with a 32-bit Windows to give them a chance to play the game now. We do listen to you, and we are also making available an UNSUPPORTED, alternate 32-bit build of the game. You will find it on Steam, in a Beta branch named unsupported_32bit. At the time of release, it will be functionally equivalent with the 64-bit build, and it should work ok so long as you don't push the graphics setting to max. Keep in mind that it's only an unsupported temporary solution, we are explicitly making no guarantees that it will work now or in the future. At some point in time, perhaps in 6 months, perhaps in 12 months, we will no longer be able to update this 32-bit fork of the game to match the feature set of the official version of the game. Hopefully by that time, you will all have migrated to a new 64-bit OS.

Release platforms/DRM

The game is released for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. It will require Valve's Steam platform to install and activate. Whether you buy it directly there, or purchase an activation key from the official game website, find it in a box from a bricks-and-mortar store, or get it from any other digital channel, you will always be getting a Steam key.

We know that not everybody is comfortable with the decision, but for us the benefits are very clear. We will be able to concentrate on improving the game itself, and will not have to lose time and focus maintaining an alternate update and account infrastructure. With Steam, pushing out an update of the game is a matter of one button press. We can take advantage of Steam Workshop to have a central repository of mods, and will not have to create and moderate our own alternate solution. We would really have a hard time having to create our own system to sell, deliver and update game DLCs with equal robustness to Steam's proven infrastructure. We hope that you will understand why we are making this choice.

Bonus Paintjob Reminder

Speaking of Steam and the benefits its system allows us to provide... We would like to remind you about an exclusive steam-punk paint-job bonus DLC. It can be yours in exchange for following us on American Truck Simulator Steam page. We are going to give early purchasers of the game a few extra days to allow them a chance to earn this bonus. Next week, the game will auto-magically update itself for all active followers to add these beauties:

    1. You mean it isn't free so it automatically is too expensive? Get over yourself £14.99 is piss cheap these days. ETS2 was £24.99 at launch (got it for £14.99 mind) and that was 3 and a half years ago

      Delete
    2. Most new games nowadays cost over $50 so $20 is a pretty low price

      Delete
    3. They'll be making a lot of their revenue through frequent add-ons, which is fine with me, they have very fair price points. I'll buy whatever SCS sells me.

    4. Go and buy 60/70U$D games, and then go and buy some more extras dlc for 5 to 10 U$D to complete the game.

    5. What an idiot....to expensive? If you cannot afford a 14 pound game than you should reconsider playing video games because you clearly cannot afford it. Video Gaming is a luxury, not an everyday requirement, get your shit together and pay or f off.

    6. I was expecting £24.99 haha, this is a straight up steal at this price,

    7. It can be cheap for people who live in such countris as the USA or UK, but for people who live such countries as Russia, Turkey, or Brasil it's much to expensive.

    8. I love the work of SCS don't get me wrong. But I've had the most fun with 18WoS series. Especially with Haulin.

I think their new titles lack "character" This new American truck sim has the same shell, same engine as ETS2, I wish they would inject more 18WoS style such as AI drivers commenting the weather up ahead or reporting the police patrol. The way you could ask for information was also pretty cool in 18WOS. The weather was so real and on some parts it actually snowed.

They did implement police car that chases you in ATS, but wouldn't it be cool that you would actually have to stop for it and then they'd give you a ticket?

I seriously think that SCS should consider all the good stuff from old 18WoS titles to be implemented and maybe add some extra stuff to make the game more realistic. Perhaps free roam mode with your character? Getting inside fuel station to pay for the gas. Getting out of the truck and grabbing onto the nozzle to put it inside the trucks tank.. Details like that would be mind blowing if you ask me.

  18. Steam only? You can forget it. I like to actually OWN my games, not have a 'license' to use them. If I don't like your updates I should have the right to not use that version, but Steams 'Automatic Updates' prevent me from doing that. Steam trashed San Andreas from this problem. I'm now glad your game got leaked

    ReplyDelete

    1. You know you can turn OFF automatic updates, idiot, what a sad excuse for not buying. Glad your not buying it

      Delete
    2. Tell me actually where you can do that?

      Steam removed that ages ago

      Delete
    3. Liam is right, dont like a certain update reinstall. patch it to that point and turn off automatic updates then play in offline mode. If you wanna play online keep it updated. dont be a sad little girl because your probably trash mods dont get supported from update to update (which steam marketplace should help with) gg go play some more WOW.

      Delete
    4. Haha grandpa the dinosaur just give it up and get Steam. You can turn off automatic updates, you can play the game completely offline, and if Steam ever closes it's doors (not likely) they'll provide a way to run your games standalone. Or the 3rd party community will, since Steam games have already been pirated and cracked without the need to run Steam. Seriously just an inane, backwards argument that NO other company but SCS has to deal with.

      Delete
    5. I would say your argument, that suggested the use of piracy as a counter-measure to the possible shortcomings of the game being dependent on Steam, was inane and backwards.

      Delete
    6. Also, please show me a legally binding document that states "if Steam ever closes it's doors (not likely) they'll provide a way to run your games standalone".

      Thanks.

  22. R$ 79,00? REALLY? If it was like R$ 40,00 or R$ 50,00 I would buy, but with this price, I'll wait for a sale. Brazil is in crisis guys, you'll not have a lot of brazilian playing ats unfortunately.
Rise of the tomb raider is U$ 60,00 and R$ 120,00 = 60*2, ATS is U$ 20,00 and R$ 80,00 = 20*4. I know the real is very low and you need profit, but 50~60 reais is good enough.

    1. what your saying is they should sell the game for 14$ which sounds unfair to them in my eyes... think about the amount of time that went into the game and whats still to come...

      Delete
    2. Amount of time? We of Brazil have taxes of hell and 20 euros is very expensive here. Amount of time no... 2 years of a copy of ETS 2. Really, I know, ATS is a awesome simulator, a awesome map and beautiful trucks, but should be yes R$12,00 dollar etc.

      Delete
    3. At 12$ it wouldnt be profitable either. I'm Canadian we get fked on taxes too and with our dollar going down last year it would have been 20$ for me to but now its 28.99 were all feeling the pain of devaluing currencies... its the world today.

      Delete
    4. But think about our life quality. They work and we work too.
USA minimum wage = 7.25 dollars per hour.
Brazil minimum wage = 3,66 reis per hour = 0.92 dollars per hour.
Brazil isn't first world, we don't have enough money for everything, if they want to support brazil (a lot of brazilian truckers on ets2) they need to think about how much money we can spend.

      Delete
    5. Everthing the game makes goes into more content by SCS. Im canadian and I am proud to hand these guys 30 bucks cad (over the 70+ the I pay for triple A titles and get less use out of) to help fun the future release of content to keep this game earning the money I spend on it.

      Delete
    6. Unfortunately what your quality of life is has no impact on the expenses SCS incurred to create the game. They are a company and here to profit. There's a reason your quality of life is lower than the US it means you need to make more decisions about what you can afford because people there on average can afford less. If you can't afford it wait for a steam sale. I dont know what else to say.

      Delete
    7. SCS doesn't think about it, other companies think, they know that brazil has a lot of gamers and if they want to sell the game here, they need to cut some dollars. Rise of the tomb raider is 30 dollars in brazil (ok, is a big company). The witness is 20 dollars in brazil, punch club is 5 dollars in brazil. They know that if they want to profit in brazil, they need to cut some money, they will have profit in long time.

      Delete
    8. Why should you support the games growth financialy any less then the rest of us? Everyone talks about minimum wage jobs. I dont know about the rest of you but I couldnt afford to game on minimum wage. I worked hard to get where I am at to be able to afford the Luxury's as well as the needs of life. If you cant afford it dont buy it, I just dont understand what makes anyone else so fucking special that they should take money away from the game that the rest of us are doing our fair share for. If the price isnt fair thats your country's fault not SCS's and they should not have to take a hit on price because the people who "lead" those countrys are retards.

      Delete
    9. Fine with me, people who aren't from the US or UK are very poor drivers, such as the Russians and Poles, or South Americans who are just now getting Windows XP. Don't want them anywhere near MP when it comes out.

      Delete
  23. Very expensive for Brazil. The country is under problems and the Real is now undervalued, so game developers usually try to compensate it by offering a lower price. You did it with ETS2 (US$ 23 = R$ 39,99), and now ATS, that costs US$ 20, comes for Brazil costing R$ 79,00? You have no idea how expensive this price is for our country.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In between ETS 2 and ATS the Real dropped even more... at some point SCS need profit.

      Delete
    2. Yeah but the game is not completed yet

      Delete
    3. The exchange rate effects each country diffrently the price for me as a Canadian to buy anything from America has doubled over the last few months. I dont see why you should be offered a cheaper price then the rest of us because your country is having a hard time (not ment as a rude comment against your country) simply not ours or SCS's problem.

      Delete
    4. I agree michael, SCS needs profit, but other companies make the game a little cheaper to brazilians, as I said, minimum wage in USA is 7.25 dollars per hour, in Brazil is 0.92 dollars per hour, we don't have the same money as americans have, we can't be compared.
If they spent money translating the game to brazilian portuguese, they want to sell the game here, but they can't sell with this price. Bethesda made it and only few brazilians bought.

      Delete
  24. Thanks for clarifying all that!
If you could get Steam Workshop for the mods, it'd be the best. That's a good way to keep track of all mods.
I can't wait to play the game!

I know this might not be the place to make a suggestion/request, but... I think a hunger meter would be awesome. It would work just like the fatigue meter, but instead of sleeping, it would make us stop at hot dog stands, or restaurants, and places like that.
Some food would calm our hunger more than others and would cost more or less, depending on that.

I can't help thinking of that everytime I drive by a restaurant. I think it would make it more inmersive and would take advantages of the already-created food places across the map.

    Again, thanks for this memo!
I'm buying shit out of ATS tomorrow! Haha.

    Cheers!

    1. I'm pretty sure when they get licences for the other trucks they will give them to us for free, Arizona is going to be a free release real soon and all simulator games are built to expand apon, If your pissed with the price here look at Train Simulator....

    2. I'm okay with the price, and I actually own a Train Simulator with a bunch of dlcs. Just to compare: ETS2 was cheaper in RU region, had MORE travelling reserve and, how much?, eight trucks on the start. But if the price will truly be this high, not many gamers in Russia will buy it. Most of them will prefer to buy GTA V or previously mentioned XCOM 2.

      Delete
    3. It's like here, if we add 5 dollars in brazilian price, we can buy gta v, a AAA game. ATS is a indie game, 20 dollars for usa is ok, but they can't base everything on usa price, the world isn't the same, someplaces things are cheaper than the others. SCS made a big mistake converting 20 dollars to all world.

    8. "your goverment devalued the Real not SCS, 80R$ is 20$us your paying the same as everyone else".

i disagree. a real comparison would be taking the percentage of the minimum wage. this is almost 10% of our minimum wage.

    9. @frederico as I stated in comments above... It is not up to SCS to make up for your contries poor wages. The game was created where the average person makes 32kUS a year. They are a company and need to profit if you want to see the game get better. If your not happy with earning less protest against your government or move. This is basic economics, If you live in a place with shitty wages then you can afford less. point finale...

    11. I LOVE how people try to talk about "fair price" for countries that they don't belong or don't know anything about. /sarcasm

Let me explain this: the currency exchanges float a lot nowadays, a lot, but that doesn't mean that every day the prices are adjusted.

What the game industry usually does (actually a lot of industries too) is to do a market search / evaluation before setting a price for something on the country currency. So, for instance, the majority of games in the Brazil (I would say 99%) Steam Store DOESN'T cost the US price converted to real using the conversion rate, as this would just make the market here impossible, no one would buy anything.

But that's actually what SCS did by setting a $19,99 game to be R$ 79,00. A lot of other games that cost $ 19,99 on the US store cost something between R$ 39 to R$ 49, that's how the market work.

SCS decided to just convert the price from dollars to real, and that's why so many people are complaining.

Please take care of your own country prices and leave us alone, we are talking with SCS, we don't need your support / approval.

      Thanks.

  43. Awesome news on the unsupported 32-bit build. I'm still on my 7 year old Windows install that is 32-bit. I had bought a new hard drive to install 64-bit too but haven't had a chance. So this gives me a bit of breathing room to wait and not rush. I can't wait!

  45. Thats pretty cheap! I also think your strategy with going steam-only is a good choice to focus on the important stuff. The full 64-bit support is nice, the game can/should be allowed to use some memory (RAM and VRAM) to make it look even better.^^

Но необходимо выделить время на проверку драйверов устройств, чтоб определиться Win 7 или 8.1, 10.

  49. Unfortunately to fanboys, this game is nailed copied Euro Truck.Reasons:
    - You dont know which game you play if you dont see truck
    - Euro Truck dawn days had triple more content/details/map
    - During my 1 hour gameplay, i predict physic is worse
    - No aerodynamic.truck are flying under the road
    - Kenworth truck sound is hardly remixed of Scania V8
    - Scandinavian employeers place
    - Same weather system, maybe some little changes at sunny day
    - a lot more
Yes, its from same developers, and we could expect similar game.. But this game is not similar.. Is not nearly as good as 18 WoS and other series.Bad copy-paste.
18 Wheels of Steel: American Long Haul was 100 times better game if you compare..

    - If you copied everything from 18 WoS's series, and make with today standard graphics and physic, better job would been done

Compare the two screenshots.. Oslo, or somewhere in U.S.A?

    1. I agree with you. 20 bucks for an early access game is too much. And it is the same as ETS2 (UI, menus, gameplay, graphics, etc..). I think SCS need to move forward and make the next big truck simulator game as it did with ETS2 back in the day and don't recycle the same again... I will buy it in 6 months from now, maybe in summer sales, just to see the progress of it.

Nowadays echange rate is 78RUB for 1 USD, while salaries are still the same as 3 years ago or even less which means factual salarie is 2 times less. So right now not many people will afford your game at such price which will mean more piracy from people who would buy this game at more affordable price

    1. Totally agreed, cannot afford for the listed price, I'd give SCS 800 rubles or something like that, but they decided to get nothing from me. Okay then.

  55. -Because you need a Steam account to play the game, the future use of the product then depends on agreeing to Steam's terms of service which they can legally change at any time (so long as they inform the user). If I were not to agree with those future terms it would then stop me from playing a game I purchased under the earlier terms.

Were those to change and my computer not meet those requirements, I may need to, for example, spend additional money such as installing a newer operating system just to continue playing the game in the future.

    3. love how people try to talk about "fair price" for countries that they don't belong or don't know anything about.

Please take care of your own country prices and leave us alone, we are talking with SCS, not everyone.

      Thanks.

    1. "However, we are receiving a lot of requests from players stuck with a 32-bit Windows to give them a chance to play the game now. Hopefully by that time, you will all have migrated to a new 64-bit OS."

  64. I think R325 is fair, because they are not a South African company, they are not a Brazilian company, they are a Czech Rep. company, that has the Euro as their currency, not R$, the Rand or the Rouble. SCS also has to pay wages and taxes just like any other business. They also need a profit margin that they can use to expand ATS and ETS2 for the future otherwise a company doesn't take risks (starting new projects) if there isn't enough money to make it secure. So even though R325 is expensive IMHO, it's a fair price considering the exchange and I will be saving up to buy it in the future.

    1. Just for the record. Czech Republic use Crown not Euro.

      Delete
    2. The currency doesnt matter, what matters is the Czech Republic has a very high Human Development index and with that comes higher minimum wages... the average czech citizen makes an average of 32k us a year, so you can imagine the salary for experenced coders and artists... At the end of the day If you live in a country where 20$ is a lot and you like the game save for it... not all countries are created equal and people dont deserve handouts that hurt companies from other countries bottom lines because of this. If your not happy in your country find a way to move.

  73. I'm a big fan of ETS2 (1k+ hours) and I waited for ATS since I heard about it.

I'm very disappointed with the steering and force feedback effects to the point where I asked for a refund because I see no reason why I should drive this instead of a Peterbilt 389 in ETS2.

Its not that its small or it has 2 trucks. Its the fact that those 2 trucks have a 6x4 chassis that feels worse than any 6x4 chassis in ETS2.

Floaty cabin, oversteering, jerky steering and steering with barely any ffb effects.

Of course I played with the sliders to find a suitable setting.

A major disappointment for me. It would have been better to rebrand ETS2 as Truck Simulator and integrate ATS in it.

As it is right now, those 6x4 chassis are the most unrealistic truck experience in a game so far.

  76. Actually, I wonder, why there is no special promotion for those, who play ETS2. For example, I own every single DLC for ETS2 (incl. Raven and PC Gamer) each bought separately (not on sales, etc), and I'd appreciated some discount for supporting SCS THAT much.
