Czech & Slovak Games Week 2023

Today marks the beginning of Czech & Slovak Games Week, an annual event that celebrates games created by studios based in the countries of Czechia and Slovakia. Our studio has been around for over 25 years, witnessing the major growth of the local games industry. During our humble beginnings, there were less than than a hundred individuals creating games on a professional basis in our countries. These days, well over 2,000 people in the region are making a living creating games, and making quite an impact on the global gaming scene. What a ride it has been!

We may not be the oldest studio, but we are proud to be a part of this growth from the early years, and we are honoured to partner up with so many fantastic and creative studios during this week-long celebration.

Many of the games participating will be celebrating by offering cool discounts on Steam and any platforms where players can find them. Unfortunately, we used up our available discount slot recently on the launch of the West Balkans DLC, and we will only be able to do a promotional sale around the time of the Kansas DLC launch (wink wink). Still, we wanted to support the CZ & SK Games week in some way on Steam and give the people exploring the vast offering of locally produced games a bargain to try our titles as well; Or to catch up, in case they already own one of our flagship truck simulators, but were looking for an excuse to try the other one. We have found a working solution on Steam - a dedicated bundle may do just the trick! We are aware that most of our readers probably know our games in and out, but it may still be a good way of growing our fanbase.

One part of Czech & Slovak Games Week that always stands out is the unique and beautiful artwork that accompanies it. Anna Voříšková, one of our talented 2D artists, continues to be the main driving force behind the creation of these wonderful designs. We spoke with her to learn more about the process on creating artwork for such an event.

"This is the fourth year I've volunteered to create artwork for the event, and I feel like with each year I continue to challenge myself more and more in terms of the art's vision and composition." Annie explains  "It's always my job to design everything, from start to finish, which is a very challenging job and a huge responsibility, but to see it done, see the event up and running, is such a rewarding feeling. I'm very proud of what we've accomplished together with my teammates at GDACZ."

"The theme I've chosen for this year's event is "togetherness". Czechia and Slovakia have a very warm relationship and I wanted to represent it in the artwork. The two characters - a Czech girl and a Slovak boy - play through a platformer together to reach a common goal, while munching on some popular local snacks. The platformer itself also pictures various landmarks from both Czechia and Slovakia. I really wanted the artwork to have an educational impact as well - it tells you a little about the culture of both countries."

"The cover art took around 30 hours to design, sketch, outline, colour, and polish. The details and clean, intricate lines are mostly to blame. I did most of the work on my iPad, which I like to take to cafés for a little change of scenery. And no, I really don't wanna think about the cost of all the large Starbucks coffees I had to consume to get it done!"

We are proud of the work Anna undertakes in her own time for this special event! The Czech & Slovak Games Week takes place between November 13th and November 20th and features a number of discounts for locally created games across a multitude of platforms, along with digital events and online streams. We urge you to check it out for yourself! You can find the Czech & Slovak Games Week Steam page right here.

Czech & Slovak Games Week 2022

Today, Czechs and Slovaks commemorate student demonstrations under the Nazi occupation in 1939 and against the Communist regime in 1989. Celebrated as Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day, it is a reminder that life in freedom is not to be taken for granted. It was the so-called Velvet Revolution sparked by the student protests on November 17, 1989, that removed the shackles of the oppressive communist regime from our society. The return to democracy has allowed for the Czech and Slovak games industry to appear and flourish since the 1990s. The spirit and courage of the protests are still inspiring today. A special memory - thank you, Martin Klima of Draci Doupe and Warhorse!

Since 2020, we've been participating in Czech & Slovak Games Week, an annual event that celebrates games created by studios based in Czechia and Slovakia. Last year, 223 games from 92 game studios participated across a multitude of platforms, including Steam. We are happy to take part again with our top simulation titles during this week-long event.

We are honoured to partner up with so many fantastic and creative studios from Czechia and Slovakia. From legendary studios creating action and adventure to virtual reality games, we recommend you take the time to check them all out.

Like previous years, our talented 2D Artist, Anna Voříšková, has been the main driving force behind the beautiful artwork that themes this special games week. "This year, I wanted to put more focus on the actual Czech and Slovak game developers..." Anna explains, "by incorporating a (fictional) game studio into the artwork and showing how much joy game developers bring to people across the world. There are many types of players featured in the artwork - from console players, to people who game on laptops, gamers with expensive PC setups, and even Virtual Reality enthusiasts".

Anna has been creating Artwork for the Czech & Slovak Games Week for the past 3 years and we are really proud of her talent, time, and hard work. The Czech & Slovak Games Week takes place between November 14th and November 20th and features a number of discounts for locally created games across a multitude of platforms, along with digital events and online streams. You can check out the Czech & Slovak Games week Steam page right here!

Speaking of broadcasts, The Czech and Slovak 2022 Direct Showcase took place this week, maybe you heard about it? If you haven't already, you may want to give it a watch back, as you may just find a little surprise announcement from us there about an upcoming map expansion for one of our titles, enjoy!

Czech & Slovak Games Week 2021

Last year, SCS Software participated in the Czech & Slovak Games Week, a sale on Steam with around 160 games celebrating Czech and Slovak games. It was a tremendous success so the event is happening again, but it's getting bigger and better!

Our role in the genesis of this special week for the Czech and Slovak games industry has been substantial. A tiny team here at SCS has been the catalyst and the organizing element for coordinating so many interests of so many companies scattered around our countries. To this day the coordination, communication, and Steam page design including all the graphics is up to us to handle.

Games Week isn't a simple Steam sale anymore, it's shaping up as a fully-fledged event spanning multiple platforms and multiple related events happening throughout the week, inspired by gamesweekberlin or Melbourne International Games Week.

We already mentioned the event had been a huge success the previous year. And just how much of a success had it been? You can take a look at how Charles Games was doing with its serious indie game Attentat 1942 during last year’s Games Week. Here's the backstory about last year's event, which was centered around the Czechoslovak Independence Day.

November 17 marks the anniversary of the 1989's Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution so we have decided to focus the Games Week around this date. So, what's going to happen during the Games Week?

Game discounts

261 games from 116 game developers are taking a part in the sale, most of these games are discounted. Sales are available on Steam, GOG, itch.io, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, iOS, Android and Huawei AppGallery. Plenty of platforms to play Czech and Slovak games on!

The best game from the CZ/SK game jam

This year, the game development program at the Charles University and the Game Developers Session conference are joining forces with the Game Days Košice conference and Bratislava Game Jam to create CZ/SK Game Jam Week 2021. There's a common opening ceremony, a keynote speaker and even some diplomas! On Monday, November 15 at 18:00 UTC, a panel of Czech and Slovak judges will be choosing the best game of CZ/SK Game Jam Week 2021!

You can play the games here: Czech GDS Jam, Slovak Bratislava Game Jam.

Czech Game of the Year nominations

2020 was a year when some really great Czech games were released. To name a few: Mafia: Definitive Edition, Creaks, Someday You'll Return, Jets'n'Guns 2, or Ministry of Broadcast. Which games will get nominated for the prestigious Czech Game of the Year award? You can find out on Tuesday, November 16 at 18:00 UTC.

Games Week Direct

Inspired by the Nintendo Direct, the Games Week Direct will showcase upcoming games with exclusive trailers, updates for already released games, and more. Tune in on Wednesday, November 17 at 18:00 UTC to watch this show and make sure to not miss some news from us, too. ;)

Game Developers Session

The annual GDS conference, which started in 2003 and is the oldest game developers conference in Europe, is happening on November 19-20. The tickets are "pay what you want", so make sure to check out the Game Developers Session website, grab a ticket and watch talks by David Gilbert, Kate Edwards, Don Daglow, and many more speakers.

Now, go play some Czech & Slovak games on Steam and on other platforms!

Open World Trucking Bundle

You may have noticed that Steam is currently running the Open World sale. We consider ourselves pioneers of the open-world exploration genre with our truck sims, and we are happy that both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator have been included in such an offer among other great titles.

We had a really fantastic time with our #BestCommunityEver on our developer stream yesterday. It was a pleasure to present our progress on Convoy, our take on implementing multiplayer support into our games Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator.

Currently, this new feature is still under testing in Experimental Beta for American Truck Simulator. But as of the upcoming Update 1.41, Convoy will give you a chance to enjoy both games with your friends! We thought that this is a great opportunity for us to make it a no-brainer for loyal fans of either of our games to pick up the other title if they are still missing it in their game library. We have created a special time-limited Open World Trucking Bundle through which anyone can easily grab ETS2 and/or ATS. No excuses, everyone will be ready to join their friends' convoys!

The sale is already underway and it will end on May 31st at 10:00AM PDT (5PM UTC). Besides both of the games being on sale individually, the whole bundle will be a part of the sale too. Also, don't forget to check out some of our other games and DLC as they are receiving a discount as well.

We hope we’ll see you and many more new faces on the road!

Euro Truck Simulator 2: 1.40 Release

Hot on the heels of yesterday's ATS update, we are excited to announce the highly-anticipated arrival of update 1.40 for Euro Truck Simulator 2 as well!

We'd like to thank all those who took part in the 1.40 Open Beta, made bug reports, and provided general feedback on this new version. We hope you can now begin to fully enjoy the various new features which are included within this update. So, what can you expect to find in the 1.40 update for ETS2?

Let us give you a quick recap of the most significant changes.

New Visual Lighting System

One of the biggest changes you'll notice when you first hop into your truck cab is the implementation of our new visual lighting system.

To prepare for this new lighting system, our teams had to make a lot of changes not only to our graphic renderer, its code, and other functionalities, but also to existing in-game world objects; including a majority of the in-game assets, textures, and materials to better work with the new physical model of the new lighting system. Want to get an in-depth look into what we had to revisit to make this major graphical change happen? Read more about it here.

We are very excited for you to be able to experience and immerse yourself in driving in the new light. The result is the culmination of a ton of hours by our programmers and visual effect artists and many other teams involved in the creation process of this new system. And even after this tremendous amount of work already spent in this area we are still not completely done. You can expect further changes and improvements to be done in the future. So while the open beta is done, we are still open and more than happy to get your feedback and opinions about this new graphics upgrade for our games.

Revisiting Germany

1.40 also brings the final phase of our Revisiting Germany project which a small team of mappers has been working on.

For those who are new to our game, the Revisiting Germany project consists of a small dedicated map team, who has been working hard to update one of the oldest map sections of the base game with a more realistic and up-to-date look.

The biggest change that comes with this update is a complete reskin and rework of all the highways and roads in this part of our in-game world, which was not retouched in previous updates.

Additionally, the areas around Dortmund, Köln, Dusseldorf, and Duisburg have not only benefitted from a complete road network redesign but a few new intersections and roads as well! The southern part of the Bundesautobahn 7 is now available in this update.

Vive La France ! New Cities

With the upcoming release of the Iberia expansion for Euro Truck Simulator 2, we know that many drivers will be excited to progressively make their way down Europe to cross into the peninsula for the first time. With France being mainland Europe's gateway to Spain and Portugal, our team has developed 2 new French locations which are a part of a free update to the Vive La France ! DLC coming with 1.40.

The first of these is the city of Bayonne, located in the southwest of France; it is the capital of the French Basque Country and an important connection for drivers heading to Spain as it is located close to the border.

The second location is the smaller commune of Lacq, which is located in the Arrondissement of Pau. While this small village is going to be just a scenic drive-through for most, Lacq is home to the largest refinery in France.

Both of these areas plus two new connecting junctions in Toulouse and Bordeaux come as a free update to the Vive La France ! DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2, which we originally announced would arrive with the release of Iberia. However, with them being ready now, we thought it would be a nice surprise to include them early in this update.

Super Stripes Paint Jobs Pack Update

Our latest ETS2 DLC is also about to get an update - two of the amazing designs in the Super Stripes Paint Jobs Pack have been expanded and are now applicable on owned trailers! And believe it or not, there was a small social media experiment behind the choice of the two paint jobs that were picked for this upgrade.

Back in November 2020, we wrote several short and seemingly insignificant posts on our Euro Truck Simulator 2 and SCS Software Facebook pages, where we called upon our community to cast votes on which DLC designs you liked the most. Today we are happy to share with you that the two most popular designs are getting an upgrade so that everyone can match these designs on both trucks and trailers!

Your engagement and activity on our social media channels really do matter! We can't wait to see all the beautiful matching combinations on your vehicles. This may be a good opportunity for some VTCs to redesign their virtual corporate identity!

Changelog

Steam Awards 2020 Nominations

Today, the nominations for the annual Steam Awards are opening, along with the start of the Steam Autumn Sale. You may still remember that back in 2016, our incredible #BestCommunityEver was so active during the first year of Steam Awards, that our Euro Truck Simulator 2 managed to claim victory in two categories.

However, time flies, a lot of fantastic games have been added to the Steam library over the years, and many of them have rightfully accumulated massive fan-bases as well. Meanwhile, Valve adjusted the rules such that titles launched before 2019 can now be nominated in only one category - The Labour of Love, a category that reflects that a game still gets new updates and active support years after launch. This category will surely be very crowded! But still, we may give it a collective try, what do you think?

If you feel that either Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator deserves the Labour of Love award, or possibly at least some buzz and visibility for being nominated and in the category, we will appreciate your vote and support. You can cast your vote by heading to this year's Steam Awards Nominations page.

Czech & Slovak Games Week Steam Sale

Today is a very special day not only for the Czech Republic, our home country, but also for our friends in Slovakia. On this very day 102 years ago (October 28th 1918), Czechoslovakia declared independence. Many things have changed since that time - most importantly, in 1993, former Czechoslovakia split into 2 separate countries: The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. But the year 1918 still remains the most significant milestone in the recent history of both countries to this date.

To commemorate this special day, Avi Duda, a producer here at SCS Software, came up with an idea that would bring together game developers from across Czechia and Slovakia - to feature their games in a special Steam event. It all started recently when Avi noticed and was inspired by a similarly-styled Swiss Developer Sale on Steam. Says Avi, "I liked the idea of a national sale showcase a lot, it felt like something which would make an impact for the Czech and Slovak game industry... I wanted to highlight not only the best-known games, but also indie games because they need the most support; indies always have to try hard to be visible and have their games discovered."

As a representative of SCS Software, Avi went ahead to share the idea with the Czech Game Developers Association. "I suggested doing this sale together, as it's something I love doing, and several other developers we probed got back to us supporting the notion". It gained so much positive attention that Pavel Barák, The Chairman of the Czech GDA, went on to contact the Slovak Game Developers Association to ask if they would like to join in for such an occasion. In the next 3 days, the GDA received an overwhelming response from 50 different developers registering their interest in this idea.

Still, this was only a start, we had to get Steam/Valve aboard with the idea. It took a while, but we have been fortunate to do so thanks to the united voice of the biggest Czech game developer studios. Many weeks have passed as we were trying to arrange the sale. Finally, with the confirmation in-hand and a looming deadline, this final element was required - artwork for the Steam sale page.

Enter Anna Voříšková, a talented artist here at SCS Software. "I fell in love with the idea right away," she said. "I thought it was amazing and I had to be a part of this project!" Immediately, Anna started sketching up ideas for the artwork that would eventually be featured in front of the massive Steam userbase. She goes on to explain her ideas behind the final featured design... "I knew I wanted to make something cute, playful, and eye-catching, but at the same time, I wanted it to have a homely, familiar feeling to it. I figured placing different video game characters and objects on a gamer's desk and have them interact with each other would be the right idea! And since I like to use unnatural colours in my work, I decided to go for a palette full of bright pinks and purples, inspired by the LED lights that often frame gaming setups".

The final artwork features vibrant colours, objects, and characters from a whole host of games from both countries, as featured in the Steam sale event. "It's been a huge honour for me to have had the opportunity to represent both the Czech & Slovak game industries in my artwork." Anna says "I'm really proud of what we've managed to create together, considering how tiny our team was, and how little time we had. I had a lot of fun creating graphics for the event, it's been a truly unique experience and I really hope I get to be a part of something similar again in the future!"

Thanks to the hard work of Avi and Anna, today you can find over 160 games on sale from 72 developers. We encourage you to explore and check out the wide array of games available, created by studios large and small, as well as individual developers. We are proud to see that our small region in Central Europe has produced so many fantastic games played by people all over the planet.

The sale only runs until November 2nd, so make sure to check out all the amazing games and the original featured artwork on Steam's Czech & Slovak Games Week page HERE.

As a historical footnote, you may find this recent article at Ars Technica of interest. It's a well-researched piece exploring the ancient history of Communist-era illicit text-based games produced by kids in Czechoslovakia as a way to protest against the oppression of the regime - pioneers and to a large extent forgotten heroes at the dawn of what is now the Czech and Slovak games industry.

Colorado: Million Dollar Highway

Colorado offers a long list of amazing landmarks for visitors and residents alike to admire and visit, but one specific area of this colorful state attracts drivers from across the world.

Located in the southwest, the U.S. Highway 550 stretches between New Mexico and Colorado serving as a vital link between the two states. However, there is one portion of this route that is more famous than any other, the “Million Dollar Highway”… with a name like that it’s got to be impressive, right?

Offering views of mountains, valleys and gorges, the Million Dollar Highway is a road like no other. Stretching for around 25 miles (40 km) it has been said that it's one of the nation’s most spectacular drives (and for good reason too).  The highway delivers jaw-dropping vistas and stunning backdrops on its winding and often dangerous road.

So why is this stretch of road named the Million Dollar Highway? There are several stories including that it cost a million dollars a mile to build it and that its fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ore; either way, we are sure that this will become a popular route for truckers in our upcoming Colorado DLC for American Truck Simulator.

Excited to see more? Check out this work in progress gameplay footage from the Million Dollar Highway in American Truck Simulator! And don't forget to check our social media profiles too (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), as you might spot a piece of different content there!

If you like what you see, then be sure to add Colorado to your Steam Wishlist. It really helps support our upcoming expansions and notifies you of any releases or future sales.

A word of warning if your game cannot recognize the DLC and reports it as not compatible with the current version of the game: you may be running an older beta version of the game. Locate the game's listing in your Steam Library, open the Properties dialogue (with a right-click), go to BETAS tab, and make sure to opt out of any beta branch.

Important Notice For Our Modding Community

Due to the appearance of mods with sets of our World of Trucks event rewards and Steam inventory items - we feel the need to clarify our policy.

Seeing countless mods for our games is great and we're happy that so many talented people are investing their time in adjusting, improving or creating new content - but there are limits of what is and isn't fine. Simply copying our content, without making any meaningful changes (and without making the mod DLC dependable in case of DLC content) absolutely isn't. Steam inventory item modifications are not either. These items are meant as, and should stay so, something special that not everyone has, while also being a part of Valve's Steam market.

This restriction isn't meant to harm our great modding community, it's strictly to protect the value of said items. Every single one of them has to be obtained as a reward for time invested into our many WoTr events, or eventually bought from someone who earned them that way.

So far we've banned a few of those mods, and some of the authors were warned. From now on, we will take these mods as a direct violation of property rights and we will react accordingly.

We've set up a topic for questions about this - if there are any - on our forum. We won't reply on questions regarding this restriction anywhere else.

Due to the informative nature of this post, comments have been disabled.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Steam Awards 2018

We are really proud that Euro Truck Simulator 2 has been nominated for this year's Steam Awards. We still remember the total surprise when the game was nominated in two categories back in 2016, and the even larger shock when it won the two awards. The competition is always massive, there are so many new great games appearing every year, and so many oldies but goldies still on people's minds. Fortunately, it's obviously also the case with ETS2, and it's truly great to see it nominated for the "Most Fun with a Machine" Award.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our fans, the nomination is a true sign of the power of the fan community!

Now that the voting starts, we'll once again rely on your kind support. There are five really strong contenders in the category, but we can dream big. A somewhat funny aspect of it is that three of the games nominated for the "Most Fun with a Machine" Award have been developed in our home city - Prague, Czech Republic. Looks like there are a lot of geeks living here obsessed with developing games related to cool machines! :)

Anyway, the nominations are a great start, but we are far from finished. To stand a chance, we need you to vote again. We ask all truckers, drivers, and sim enthusiasts: Vote for ETS2, together we can do it!

The Voting opens December 20th, and closes January 3rd. The winners will be announced in February 2019.

ETS2 is the proud holder of two Steam Awards 2016. Can we earn a third trophy?

Beyond the Baltic Sea released!

We celebrated another important day for SCS Software  - the release of Euro Truck Simulator 2's large map expansion Beyond the Baltic Sea.

Beyond the Baltic Sea was published 06:00PM UTC on Thursday, November 29, 2018

To shorten the wait before release, we held a broadcast of a live-stream from our just-established studio in SCS Software's office. It's was the first experiment with streaming by ourselves, it was a bit improvised. You can see on the screenshot how it looked just a few hours before the start! We made a couple of interviews with people from the development team, answered some of the questions that may come our way, and of course, we played the new DLC live most of the time. You can watch the recorded stream on our Youtube channel.

As mentioned in the previous blog post, we also published three new national paint job packs bound with this expansion. It means that the players in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will get an option to get and use their own unique graphics packs from now.

Typically, country-specific paint jobs are purchased by the players from the given country. But we know that there are some players out there who like to collect every DLC related to our game. So we have prepared a special sweetened offer lumping together the new map DLC with the paint job packs of all the countries in it, including Finland and Russia which have been available for some time already. You may consider checking out Baltic bundle first before clicking any other purchase button on the Steam Store.
