Trucks & Trailers & pedestrians

Today's screen is from Trucks & Trailers. As you can see we are using the game as a sort of laboratory for experimenting with humans in the virtual world. Especially the city scenes look way more natural when they are not barren of all life any more.

It is still too early to come to conclusions regarding presence of people walking or riding bicycles in ETS2. We would need to make sure that the player can never hurt them - to keep the game's parental rating low. This is an important factor for a game that's supposed to be played by boys aged 7-10!

  1. See that you have two bugs:
    1. grass through the fence
    2. grass through asphalt
I hope to resolve these minor bugs

  2. SCS 1 simple sollution for your problem:

Make the pedestrian and bicicles models non-collisionable so you just go through them without hurting them or make them fall...

They will be some kind of detaild, but you can't collide anything with them.

Anyway love the new models (both trucks and buildings)

    Keep us updated guys! :)

  3. But why age 7-10? In Hunagry The most player want a real simulator and we are 16-40 years old :/

  4. Sorry to hear such bad news about pedestrians :(

Parental rating is the reason why pedestrians were cut from Rig'n'Roll. But they were brought back by mods :D
Hope that you will make something about this problem. And BTW, great job SCS!

  5. They were banned in rig 'n roll because you were able to kill them and collide with them...

If they just make them like I said, there will be no problem.

  6. I don't like the idea of people, where you can drive through them and nothing happens...

    two solutions fom other games:
    1. Bus Simulator 2008:
when you hurt a person, your game is over and nothing from the accident is seeable...

    2. Midtown Madness 1:
when you drive on the sidewalk, people are "jumping" in parts of a second to the site, so you cannot hit them...

The cities would look better with people. You should also build a living parking area on highways, where people goes out of the car to refuel the car and to pay in the shop; or to go to a bush for a - eh - for a very personal thing... ;)

  7. SCS developers, i have two requests to you, but very big:

    1. Please, everyone who plays GTS, ETS or ATS wanna drive with truck maximally 90km/h, nothing more.. maybe the range of the limiter can be from 85 to 90km/h, in each truck different, please, do it!

    2. I saw u made doubles, well, Eurocombi is already advanced in europe, but what about make trailers with steering axles? ..
for example this is Pacton reefer with steering axles and this kinds of trailers are very very popular, we will be happy if you will do it

  9. ETS2 must contain pedestrians and crossings for pedestrians so you have to give them priority to cross the street at junctions.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Maybe you could create pedestrians that walk behind fences and in depots, but in places where the trucks can't reach.
I would love to have to stop at a zerba crossing to let pedestrians cross!!
Also, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting so often. It's a great treat!
    SCS Software ROCKS!

  11. Great work so far. Looking forward to both games when they become available. For ETS2, could you make it a bit easier to change signs or make new ones. Also larger or heavier cargo would be cool. Thanks.

  12. "7-107" Win :D Is there a race yes ? :D

  13. I think it will be more realistic when player can hurt the human like it is in road accidents for example

    ReplyDelete
  14. Make fences or some boundary king of things along footpaths and let the pedestrians and cyclists be on the other side of it so that they are not reachable by trucks...But please do include them...Thanks

  15. No pedestrians in ETS2 no BUY the Game

  17. Very good SCS
I'm looking forward to it! Can not wait to be able to play ...

And put pedestrians in areas where trucks can not reach. So we will have nothing of injuries to pedestrians!

Keep up the great work. Congratulations forever!

  18. I see exactly what you mean (today's politically correctness can lead to strong headaches!) but it shouldn't be a problem.
First method: you could create a collision box around them and make them impossible to push around, not like the ai vehicles. Most players will soon leave them alone after finding that they're invincible!
Second choice would be modifying the boundary of the road, to protect the sidewalk too. Maybe adding more crash barriers or fences. For pedestrian crossings, you could have something similar to the border locks, that appear and act only during the red light and only if there are any pedestrians.
Third, build an algorithm to have them jump out of the way (I've seen it in other games, don't ask which) so they would be impossible to hit. Also, inside a certain radius, they could have a specific behavior, like avoiding to cross the road and hang around protected areas.

  19. Very nice SCS!
But,that Renault Magnum is the old model from GTS :(
And please show us other trucks :D

Best Game i can't wait for it !!!
    I WILL BUY IT :x

  20. I agree with crossing peds idea
    -------------------------------
And I THINK THIS IS SOLUTION:
    - when truck is very close to ped - going to hit him, screen goes to black, and it says that you hit someone, but he survived :D... when the screen comes back from black, there will be ambulance and police, you have to pay lots of money, and posibly you could get some "points" - if points system will be included (when you got 12 points, you lose driving licence - maybe there should be some place like polygon or track, where drivers will be able to improve their skills and where it's able to get few driving points back). Drivers should also get points when they drive throught red lights or when driving so fast.

Who agree? Let SCS know it! :)

    Good Luck!

  22. Also you could include Trucks and trailers to ETS2 And if you completed T&T You get driving licence, and till you did not got it you cant play with ETS2.

    Who agree?

  23. no, very simple to sort it out, just whem the truck goes to hit someone the game stop. (game over). You know they just dont want put more job in this game thats it. Any way good job.

    I've got a great idea!
Please Read it I know there is an andministrator so please tell this to other members of Team:
Menu switch to enable/disable humans with parental lock (password) :D
Please i think this is the best solution!

  26. Very nice screenshot.
Keep up the amazing work SCS Software team.

  27. Just make the peds no collison. Peeps will soon get bored when nothing happens when they try to run them over. Peds in ETS2 will make the sim even more realistic. please include.

  28. I have an idea. make it so that the player can crash into the people, but they just fall down. No blood, scars, etc. It would be nice if you could create visuals of trucks taking damage when they crash( cracked windshield, broken wheel, front, side, back). If you decide to do it, make it realistic, don't exagerate. Make the AI have this too, and then you've got yourself one realistic game.

Also, make real police that drive around. Make parking lots that are functional. Make the city more lively.

  29. The presence of pedestrians and the inability to invest? A nice puzzle game to solve!
Although it would be fun to crush someone, no one remembers "Carmageddon"? ;-)

  30. Great Job! I love the black's Scania. MULTIPLAYER OPTION IN ETS2 PLEASE!!!!!!

  31. Hi SCS ;

This is my suggestion for the rating game problem with pedestrians , just put in the game one option giving the possibility to hit/touch or hurt (accidentaly of course ) pedestrians with parental password if neccessary ... if not the game is not realistic like the real life , and is not it the goal of a simulator after all...? that way it will oblige the gamer to be carefull like if he was in real life...

You have all my support SCS team ;-)
    Good luck ;-)

  32. Simplest solutions are often best solutions. I agree with those who says "no collision pedestrians". But also, there is second simplest solution which you already have for years: I always thought that "Boundary/No Boundary" switch in editor is right for these (future) purposes. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Just do so you can take it pedestrians on/off, (: Much easier (:

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pedestrians would be a great addition to the game. To keep the rating low, either make them able to "jump" out of the way or make the screen go black when you hit someone and have to pay a fine. Being able to drive right through them as though they are invisible makes the game much less realistic.

Pedestrians make the game more realistic, and no one wants to have them banned from the game.

    Thanks SCS, you're the best!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi SCS!

Best solution is obviously to just not have collisions with pedestrians at all. Please include the pedestrians in the game. I'd rather have pedestrians that can't be collided, than not having pedestrians at all (I'm not planning to drive erratically anyways). Removing collisions would be good for the performance as well because calculating collisions can take big part of the CPU calculating power.

About the ages.. I think your games are attracting the simulation gamers (like me) who are 25-60 year old people so the ages mentioned above will probably be minority in the players of your games. :)

  36. Congratulations SCS. Always make your games for people of ALL ages!
About the pedestrians: please, put them in ETS2!!!
It's easy to solve the problem. Just make the pedestrians that can't be collided.
Or, program them to jump off right in the moment that the truck is going to hit them.
Making so will solve the problem.
    Again, congratulations!

  39. the pedestrian, cyclist's will add a massive feeling of the reality i do hope that we will live to see the pedestrians in ETS2, there are some pretty great ideas here. Screen going black sounds like the best one so far and a massive fine of 2-3k euros.

  40. I hope you will release ETS 2 in Romania ! I promise I will buy it . You amaze me guys ! You have really done a great job so far . And I know you have more work on the game . Can't wait for an American simulator too. You will definitely kick Rig'n'Roll ass . Keep up the good work guys !

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just can't wait to get them (talking about the games, not the pedestrians ;))
I think that Slider got the best way to deal with the pedestrians and the parents at the same time... More life in the city for a better realism of your game is the next evolution stage of your games mechanics.
You really do great work in truck simulation world!!!

  42. I'm liking the suggestions about how to solve the pedestrian problem with parents and kids under the age of 16.

But why don't you just add an option to take them off and that way the parents can't complain because you've given the option to take them out of game.

It's not your fault if their kids wont choose to do that and so i think you should go ahead and implement the pedestrian side into the game!!

  43. I am really happy to see that you plan the pedestrians to be an environmental asset not just in T&T but also in ETS2 as well.

I have read a great amount of nice recommendations above, anyway, let me just list the possible solutions that came to my mind... No doubt I will repeat some people who already posted some recommendations, anyway, here they come...

    1. Black-out and reloading the last save game if you collide with a ped. The drawback of this approach is that it is a way too austere and disproportionate reaction to the player's deeds. Just suppose that someone accidentally run over a ped as s/he did not notice them - such a cruel penalty is not recommended in that case, as it can be really frustrating for truckers who take the game seriously.

Unreachable peds: probably the most straightforward method. While you don't have to deal with handling collisions in this case, restricting the player of reaching the peds can still be tricky. You can achieve this either by placing them ONLY to closed areas (parks, closed yards), or having the walkways separated from the roads by rails or other barriers. The former is easier to achieve but wouldn't look so good, while the latter would require extra work (elevating and closing the walkways from traffic must be a LOT of work for mappers).

Peds on the walkways and the roads, no collision detection: We'd have peds everywhere in the city, which would be awesome. The major drawback of this approach however is that it makes the game look pretty cheap, incomplete, lashed-together, and... well, ridiculous.

Peds on the walkways and roads, "no-entry wall" collision: In this case, the truck would be immediately stopped when driving into a pedestrian, similarly to driving into the yellow and white "no entry" walls in the cities. Probably not that hard to achieve, and looks a bit better than the no-collision method. Provided that citizens use crosswalks, AI cars would treat the peds as vehicles, thus would stop before them until they move away.

Athletic citizens: Reflections' Driver-series (Driver 1,2 and the upcoming San Francisco) feature pedestrians who ALWAYS jump away from speeding vehicles. All of them are using the same stock animation no matter where they stand/walk (i.e. on the walkway, or besides the wall of a house). Something like this might be nice to see in ETS2, though it would require considerable animating and coding, even if every character would use the same anim.

I hope you'll find these ideas useful to some degree... :)

  45. The easiest would be this:

    1. Motorcycles and bicycles would be like the AI traffic, if you give a blow it would be blocked and will not move.

    2. Pedestrians will not happen to run over anything, they would walk as if they were invisible, but the truck driver would receive a hefty fine of money (this is the most affordable option if you want to have pedestrians in ETS2, everything else would be too much effort for SCS create more animations for pedestrians if hit, the censure of pedestrians on the issue of parents)

Remember that this in a driving simulator, so users must drive carefully and wisely, you want to run over pedestrians, having accidents, hit and destroy things that you play at Carmaggedon, GTA's, etc ...

Please put pedestrians in the game, the more realistic the game, more people will have more sales. Thanks SCS.

  49. Well. I do not want to kill pedestrians in that game. This means, I don't want them to "fall simply down" or to get just invisible. The last thing would mean something like "Hm, okay, you hit somebody, okay, you'll be fined, but now go on."
I just don't want real crashes to be visibly simulated at all, neither with "parental password", that's not the style of a simulator as I want it.

Maybe the citizens could be athletic or that black screen solution would be okay, too.

  53. What I mean is that we prefer trucks with real physics, good external & internal model, real sounds. Then of this, if there is people walking it will be an extra-features, but not important.

  54. SCS,

Please can you fix the mad steering issue where your truck would dive to the side and crash when you put lock on? I wont buy your game if it isn't fixed. Thanks

  55. For ETS2 My vote would be either "invincible" pedestrians (like hitting a tree) or simply non-collision, a fine or such would work too. Bicyclists could be like motorcycles in 18WoS, simply being pushed around. But unless pedestrians can be made to avoid walking into my truck I would hate to see a "game over" deal as soon as one of them touches the truck or the trailer.

But, first and foremost I would want to see good simulation and such, because while pedestrians would indeed add a lot to the world they are not a top priority.

    Overall, impressive work, SCS.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Invincible pedestrians like hitting a tree wouldn't be a good solution. That would be unreal and look like the game wasn't well thought-out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What?
keep pedestrians out of the game for the sake of 7-10 yr old boys playing the game?

    what?
is that your customer base or something.
All of a sudden I get the feeling you are aiming for ETS2 to be some kind of arcade lollygaging truck look a like.

Make the pedestrians run away if you get too close. Maybe some form of penalty system, like dangerous driving offense. But nothing fancy, us non 7-10 yr old with actual trucking experience and driving know-how would probably get fined just for starting the truck in what would result in a broken attempt for realism in a theoretically good solution , and that would be annoying!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I agree with the other comment above about adding an option in the settings menu to take out the pedestrian side of the game.

i don't like the fact that parents have a say in what you put in your games, if they have a problem with it then choose the option to take out pedestrians either at the start of the career or when you go into options have the option there as well.

also a little suggestion for you guys to think about or add, it's most likely a simple thing but,

you've done so much to the map for this game and thats great, but i was wondering if you could add a map editor option into the game for us to have the chance to design and post our new areas on your sight for others to download and add to the game map with out having to mod the map which sometimes ruins the game and crashes!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I had an idea of you putting an application to only the high beam lights (fog), which gave to blink. It would make the greatest success in Brazil!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm all for people walking or riding bicycles in ETS2!!
And I like the idea of black screen and heavy fine (penalty) to be put on a driver, who have knocked a pedestrian (as heavy as about half of his salary for the ride!! or half of the driver's money acount at all!!)
At any case, the game must be restarted from the beginning (or driver training cources) after as many as three knocked pedestrians..
Gamers must understand, after all, that they shouldn't hit people in the game and then they will play more carefully;-)
