Truck physics

We wanted to show you more than static pictures for a change today, but recording, encoding and uploading the video has taken quite a while.

Here is a look behind the scenes, into the developer's kitchen - our test bed map for vehicle physics development.


This is our testing grounds used by the programmers for constant physics tweaking, you won't find it in the final game.

No need to comment again on missing wipers or mirrors, we know about it, it's a known limitation of the test setup. The user interface code and loader code for truck parts setup is still not accessible in this branch of the development codebase.

  11. Nice progress SCS team!
    Cool to see the truck bumps. I'd suggest you to make a dynamic fuel consumption, not just 1,2 km/l and 2 unloaded, making it spend much more if the driver sticks the gears to 2500rpm the whole time.

    But, please, more realistic transmission, and:
    the truck jumps like it has very few kilos! I certainly doesn't give the truck a feeling that it is heavy and big! ;-)

    Add some more weight to the truck.

    I love ETS and GTS but i miss the replay option to be honest...

    Anyway, it seems SCS is doing a great work in this one. In my opinion ETS or GTS are the "Gran Turismo" of Truck Games. :)

  29. 1. After braking cabin too slowly takes its original position (15 sec. Video).
    2. When crossing obstacles no deformation of tires (42 sec. Video).
    3. When crossing the barriers of the wheels is too small weight (43 sec. Video).
    4. Articulated behaves as if there is no shock at all, except under the cab.

  34. All these obsessively repeated comments are beginning to get to your nerves... Don't mind them, please! The world is full of weirdos, but you shouldn't let them piss you off. All these people posting comments here are just a fraction of the mass of gamers interested in your work.
    Nice video!
    The vehicles seem to obey real world physics quite accurate. But it seems that the truck is a bit lighter that a real one. The chassis' vertical acceleration is slightly faster than normal. Maybe you can make it heavier, so the wheel movements transmit slower to the chassis. Although, this could be related to the video play-speed.
    About this "playground" that you have for testing your equations, you could provide one for the player, when buying a new truck, to do some test runs at the dealer, check acceleration and handling, even if he/she doesn't have the money to buy it. It would be nice to have a speed track where we could go, once in a while, to break from the delivery routine. Maybe even a contest circuit... but that's a new game all together! :D
    Anyway, I really love what you're doing. I bet is fantastic to see all those mechanical laws you learn in school (acceleration, inertia, drop speed, centrifugal forces etc.) applied to simulated objects!

  37. Well, you still have to work on truck physics. I want to ask you to add new truck sounds too. Try to make something like in this video [http://www.flickr.com/photos/7295020@N06/5605883228/in/photostream]. Please focus on every sound detail. Also I have a piece of advice for your map creators. Try to see things from the cab because there are many details that you make and the driver inside the cab can't notice them. Create a very busy environment with trucks, rest areas and things from real life wherewith a driver interacts with.

    How about some info on the Drivers Life, can he buy his own trailers and store them, can he see his Trucks and Trailers pass him on the roads, can he choose contracts for his drivers.

  40. That looks really good SCS.
    I just wondered whether you could make an option for people to use steering wheels with 920 degrees, and gear boxes, whether sequential or otherwise.
    I love the grpahics and the new ideas, ie) parking in different areas, pedestrians, border crossings and train crossings etc.
    I would love to see the game, where at the end of the week, maybe on the Saturday, you have to park up at your depot and pick up a car and drive to your house to stay. And then on the Monday morning drive back and get truckin' again.
    Also, it would be good if you could deliver fuel tankers to some of the petrol stations as well as other cities, as they obviously need fuel too. :)
    When you said you can personalise the cabs, does that mean that we can create a company logo and put it on our cabsa dn that of the others.
    Also, i would like to be able to pass other workers on the way around, with maybe a mini map of where they are heading and what they are delivering. MULTIPLAYER would be better though!!

    I know you have a lot of work and it all looks great, but to make the game the best it can be, you seriously need to consider some of these suggestions and that of the other members.

  41. The video looks great so far! I see some improvements but alot of ppl point out the gearbox, and i agree with them! The gearbox is just unreal, and the acceleration of the truck aswell. No truck can do that with 24 tons behind its back. So please focus abit on that aswell not just the cab movement, which is great imho only at the 15 second when the cab returns to its neutral position after the hard braking is just abit to much. Feels like a slow motion lol. I am glad tho to see that there is no more drifting with the truck which was utterly retarded in your previous games. Physics and the feeling of real life is the most important thing in my oppinion, so please dont rush trough that section!

  42. The Renault Magnum has another suspension than all other trucks in Europe .. So the cabine goes harder and much more up and down. Is this in the game too?!
    If so can you please show us something about that?!

  43. To all of you asking for gear changing tweaks, don't forget that the game is played at a much higher rate than real life!
    Try setting warp parameter accordingly and gear changes may operate closer to real gearboxes.

  47. Love the physics but hate the accelaration and probably the sound of the trucks too.


    You fixed physics clearly now SCS, but pls dont forget the sound and reduce torque of the trucks so they dont behave like freaking F1 cars who get 100km/h in 1.5 sec. Make trucks feel heave and slow to accelerate.

    Anyway nice to keep us updated and love the way the tires and the spacecab jumps !

    For dissatisfied readers: I understand you, but on the other hand, keep on mind that SCS's titles are above all games, not simulators, played by wide range of people. In fact, only minor part of SCS's customers would be able to play with realistic simulator. This minor part, obviously, is the most loud part - but still minor. There must be a line set which tells "ok, we can improve this, but we cannot make so realistic that."

  50. Truck sounds and reduce in torque can be done my moders so why not by a gaming studio who gets money for their products ?

    It's not that hard to fix and it adds a huge ammount of satisfaction to the game

  52. About sound: I always felt like I'm driving with my windows down. The AI vehicles are too loud. In a modern, sound proof cabin you don't usually hear them when they pass by.

  55. Nice job , now physics finally becomes looking good. SCS is better now. Correct the manual gearing and that's it for me. I'd see in game many of models to do maps. Focus on that couse many players can prove your mistakes and maybe they'll send to the server their maps. Think about it couse you won't do whole map and players will have a fun on doing more parts to map.

    This is an excellent driving physics! We can see an immense step forward between ETS1 and ETS2. It's like comparing two completely various classes... Toll gate on French road is very very nice. Machinery also. But bridge over the French "l'autoroute" A4 is just wonderful! Due to the driving physics I'll play in your game day and night, day and night, day and night... And so over and over again... This gives a giant plus for you and your game, SCS :)

    To jest doskonała fizyka jazdy! Widzimy przeogromny krok pomiędzy ETS1 a ETS2. To jak porównywanie dwóch zupełnie innych klas... Punkt poboru opłat na francuskiej drodze jest bardzo, bardzo ładny. Maszyny również. Ale most nad francuską "l'autorute" A4 jest po prostu cudowny! Dzieki tej fizyce jazdy będę grał w Wasze gry dzień i noc, dzień i noc, dzień i noc... I tak w kółko... To daje ogromny plus dla Was i dla Waszych gier, SCS :)

    I bought all trucks games made by SCS, so i could complain. Customer always have the rights. And its good for the fans to put pressure on SCS, to help they work harder doing a true simulator.

  69. in my opinion you need to put more weight on the truck,trailer. . . . is to "jumpy" or make the tires to "deflate" when hit an obstacle.
    Add a little more rebound on cabin shocks.

  72. I'm amazed, no doubt. What I really like to see there is the fact that the wheels on the trailers go up independently rather than a single axle bouncing the whole trailer up.

    What really bothers me is the fact that the camera in the cab view has no "laziness". It's too stiff with the cab, maybe simulate intertia having an effect on the driver by making the cab jerk around like in previous games? (ALH for example)

  75. Nice physics. Above, a player mentioned a test drive when you buy a vehicle at a truck dealer. I would like that too. Maybe, you could make it so that the player has up to 10 minutes in real time to test the truck, even if he'she doesn't have enough money. I would like that feature.

    I love the braking, keep it that way. The trucks in previous games have horrible brakes. They are not strong enough.

    Make it so that if a player brakes hard at a high speed, there are tire marks, and skidding sounds. Make it so that if I touch my brake pedal lightly, the truck brakes lightly, and if I touch it hard, it brakes hard. In GTS, that is not the case. The braking is the same no matter how hard you hit the pedal. That is very unrealistic. Don't do that for this game!

  76. Please make it so that the mirrors on the external view correspond with the internal view.

    In UKTS, with the old Scania model, on the outside, there is an additional mirror on the driver's side, but is absent from the internal view. That is very unrealistic.

    Keep it from becoming that way. I would love to see additional mirrors that actually work in the game, possibly as an accesory available for purchase.

    As for the wipers, make it so that they have three speeds: low, medium, high. Make them work the same way as the headlights. Press the W key once, the wipers are at a low speed, press it again for medium speed, press it again, high speed. Press again, off. Make the rain more realistic too, please. Add some snow in too, and create a realistic effect on the windshield. Make the wiper key relocatable.

The graphics and exterior physics are nice and all, but they are SECONDARY to proper drivetrain simulation. Look at what a team of two guys managed to do with OMSI: perfect vehicle drivetrain simulation, in version 1.0 of their product.

  87. I have to say you are doing good job! Just one idea according to physiscs. Maybe a feature of truck wear should be good. I.E after few thousand of kilometers the suspesions will not perform as new as well as other parts of the truck.(changing tyres, oil ,filters etc with consequences when the player ignore it- make a system of service intervals and consequently breakdowns - add more exciting feature to the game)

    The one thing missing is lack of gravity and object mass, which makes the truck cabin handle like it had rock hard sport suspension in every joint.

    Still a super improvement, I like!

Could there be a parameter when playing on keyboard, which limits rate of engine acceleration in low gears to make acceleration and manouvering more fluent (i mean how fast the gas pedal may be pushed to floor, eg. real driver doesn`t floor the gas pedal instantly (but with keyboard and mouse I have no choice) in low gers as he would spin the wheels. I think it would improve control of the truck and manual gershifting nnot only when driving solo.
    Another great feature would be an option to have separate button to shift (preselect) split gears like in the real thing and a clutch button of course.

  92. Nice touch, but still it has to be tweaked a little. Good start, but the cab need to move a lot more and have a recoil. Also check the sounds it makes when it brakes. Even if don't watch the movie, only listen to it you can tell it's braking. The air sounds will be a nice touch.
