New Light and Weather System Coming

Holiday time is a quiet period in our office as members of our team are spending time with their families. But we know that our fans always crave for fresh information about our projects. So here we are, with a bunch of great-looking panoramas from Scandinavia!

As you may have already noticed in some earlier screenshots we have published, there are considerable changes coming to the game environment. Several in-game graphic rendering elements have been altered or improved to achieve a richer color palette, as presented on the images in this blog post.

The most noticeable changes to the systems are improvements to HDR tone-mapping calculations and sun shafts. Each weather condition now has its own specific lighting preset, allowing us to provide different scene illumination and reflectivity depending on the current state of game environment.

Sun shafts (sometimes dubbed "God rays") will be using a new calculation algorithm which creates softer and more lifelike effects - driving during sunset or sunrise will provide you with vistas you have not yet seen in ETS2. In order to improve the looks of scenes, we've also decided to alter our fog/haze calculation system.

As the shaders and rendering code are changing, we also need to adjust quite a lot of game assets. Shaders and textures of many objects such as buildings or roads have to be updated in order to correct their specular and diffuse lighting properties to match the new system.

We are half-way through all this work, quite a lot of it is still ahead of us. We aim to release the improvements mentioned in this post alongside Scandinavia DLC. However, the visual changes will be very noticeable everywhere, it will not be just the new parts of the ETS2 world to benefit from the new graphical features. So even if you don't rush to buy Scandinavia right away when it's released, you will get the visual changes as a part of a free game update available for all Euro Truck Simulator 2 owners.

    1. Really? So it's MY fault... Fact is that the engine of the game IS crap, there's A LOT of game of any sort, many also of more recent generation than ETS2 (end 2012) that has better graphics and run A LOT smoother on the same hardware... it's simply ridicolous that a Intel quad 3.4ghz with a Geforce 680GTX 3gb can't run smooth even at medium details when entering in any city... And it even doesn't support more than 2 cpu cores... Have you ever read the game minimum system requirements? It's not GeForce 99999GTX you genius!

      Delete
    2. The engine of this game is fine. It runs perfectly smooth on my computer. I've played worse like watch dogs which rins like utter crap on my comnputer.

I never knew Nvidia made a 680GTX either. If you mean the GTX680 it has 2GB of Vram. I know because I have one and the game runs as smooth as silk with mods installed.

      Delete
    3. Oh... Very brilliant professor, so what is it my graphic card? if you're able to use Google i'll show you what i've got, and to be precise it's not a 3bg but 4gb model, my mistake: "Point of View/TGT GTX 680 4GB Ultra Charged", so it's also better than yours, and the game still lumbering! I'm waiting for an illuminating answer, cheers!

      Delete
    4. As I said its not the game. Its something wrong with your computer or Operating system because the game runs as smooth as silk for me.

    5. Oh well i can understand that the biggest crap in all the story could be Windoza, but for God's sake it isn't possible that annihilates the performance of the entire computer only because it's turned up...

      Delete
    6. I have to agree, I have a quite powerful computer, run the game fine at 60 FPS but, and this is a BUT - I often get stuttering, mostly near big cities. I have to admit everything is maxed out, BUT still, the game engine needs serios improvements.

      Delete
    7. Well mate you're still lucky, surely more than me; if i try to max the game graphic i think the only thing my pc will do is bleed... XD

At least I'm not the only one having this problem ...

  26. We are approaching the end of the year, so we can do a summary. ETS2 was launched 19.10.2012. 11 months later 19.09.2013 we could bought Going East! DLC. The first mention about it was on the blog 1.08.2013 so it was less than 2 months before launching it...
The first mention about Scandinavia DLC was 4.06.2014, so it was almost 7 months ago, and there is no date of premiere... don't you think is little bit to long?
I don't know when did SCS started working on ETS2, but first mention about ATS on SCS blog was 6.09.2013, so it was 16 months ago. There is no date of ending the project.
20.03.2013 was a post on the blog that SCS is working on project: Bus Simulator. There is no premiere date too. It's strange because the Europe map is done, some of the cities have even bus stations...
What about smaller things like rigid truck, Mercedes-Benz New Actros (you have shown us screenshots 25.08.2014...)? My Volvo FH16 has still the same colour of dashboards at night - I guessing it's not something complex?
I want to spend my money for you project, but I don't need another paint jobs. Please SCS launch something bigger shortly. Happy New Year for everybody!

      SCS You're doing it wrong.

      Delete
    2. Here is a voice of sense for you my friend. Go ahead and acquire the needed programming skills for completion of what you've just demanded, and than come back again to moan how slow it is, all right?
      You piece of disgraceful shit.

      Delete
    3. Wow, such math gymnastics going on there. Just because Going East! was released 2 months after a blog post, then so according to your theories, all projects by SCS suddenly not only don't scale according to the size and complexity of the project, but now all magically could fit in a 2 month blog mention to release date window.

      Delete
    4. If you read my post specifically, you would see that Going East was created 11 months after launching ETS2. Even if we accepted that SCS was working on it from the first day, I don't think that was, this takes only 11 months. In this post SCS wrote: "We are half-way through all this work", so if they started 7 months ago, we can expected this DLC for another 7 months... My point is that now in SCS works more people than 2 years ago and everything takes longer... That's it.

      Delete
    5. Its reasons like this moany post that SCS should hole on to announcing anything new until its nearing completion because some people expect things a year ago instead of when it is ready

    1. FEATURE REQUESTS

1)the grass straws /grass could have better look and should be able to move especialy when wind is up

      of trees and bushes

      which gives the game liveliness
      what it definetly needs

3)in the interior should have more motion

for example cable from cb radio device should have natural movings/ physics

of course interior courtains, a figure/ a tip/ a icon hangs in the middle of interior should have natural movings / physics

      4) adjusting steering wheel more/less vertical, longer/shorter

      5) motion and vibration interior/exterior when starting truck

      when pulling heavy haul/ uphill

when using jack brake the vibration inside and outside

      6) panorama view for interior view
that you have a better overview in cockpit

rather that(panorama) feels more like truck driving than the current view that feels like car driving /driving with blinders

      7) the motion of truck seat is a good idea thank you for that but its some adjustments

the faster i drive the more should the truck seat bounce

for example on the highways you should definetly feel the ground waves

please make an option for modders to adjust motion of truck seat so they can play with option to became a better result

thank you, for reading scs team

    4. All your suggestions are great but if they are added there should be an option to disable them because they would have a negative impact on FPS and we already have people complaining because their old and cheap hardware is not abl to produce playable FPS. Some people want the good graphics but don't want the performance hit and expect miracles.

  32. Great news and this will give the game an even better look. Although I read a lot about the new lightning system, I can't seem to find much on the new weather system which is mentioned in the title. Only about fog/haze being improved, but it would be great to have more weather types like hail and snow. Another aspect which would improve the game hugely, would be wind and its effects. Well, always things to wish for, but in the mean time very grateful to all that we are already getting from you guys at SCS. Happy New Year everyone and thanks for the continued support on this great game.

  33. LOVELY :) But How about "taillight / headlight" visibilities?

SCS is currently in my opinion one of the best game develop companies, you guys know how to do shit and make the community happy. The amount of updates in the blogs is just amazing, the amount of updates to ets2 is mind blowing. Yeah you will always have haters complaining but just ignore them.. they are just the 1 % :)

    1. The game runs almost completely on the GPU. The CPU idles all the time you spend in the game. SCS should move some of the processing to the main CPU to improve fps. Otherwise we'll have to upgrade the graphics card everytime SCS brings "new features"..

      Delete
    2. I still havent upgraded my GTX680 since the game was released and they brought out a few new features since then.

  40. It is looking gorgeous! Congrats SCS, a graphical revamp in the game is indeed very much needed. With stuff like Driveclub (PS4) and its weather features coming out, the technical competition is fierce out there. Very good work, very welcome.

One thing that also needs improvement, in my understanding is also vehicle lighting. I think it should be more physics-based, with proper source points, specially in the trucks. Would go amazing with the environment improvements mentioned here. :)

Happy new year for you guys and everyone!

  49. SCS,

I was thinking: why it seems the ATS will have great graphics, and the ETS 2 will still have this graphics? But now it is awesome! I really like it now (to be real, actually I use graphic mods, to reduce the bloom, and have more contrast), now it is more realistic, more beautiful.

But does it affect game performance?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bloom is what makes it realistic. Get your eyes checked or go play ETS1

      Delete
    2. The bloom in ETS2 is overdone making it unrealistic.

      Delete
  50. Does this mean I can turn on HDR in ETS2 again? Cos it currently makes the game look worse with the only positive of minor improvement to AI vehicle lights visibility.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have been trying to find a mod for this that is compatible with my other mods, but I couldn't find any. It is great that you're continuing to make improvements to this game.

P.S: What about real Mercedes trucks, any chance to see them in game soon?

    ReplyDelete
  56. No doubt this is very amazing...but with them putting this new light system, I started to question myself : this improvement is only for sky based ligths or this will apply to truck / cars / city lights? Because (my opinion) the actual light system, looking to the truck side, are very "beta-based". I really hope that they put a realistic light system into trucks, because the actual one are poorly made. Take mafia II for a light example. That is a masterpiece. ;)
Ps: do not get me wrong. I love Euro Truck. I am just trying to make it better.

For example, if an accident should drive cars rescue service and to spend time on the design of the accident and evacuation of the victims. In the salons, services, hotels, bases add the ability to communicate with staff. Finally to make clickable panel in the cockpit, and add animation. And finally add a regular trailer with the swing axis... the Rest will finish "moodaly". Happy New Year to all!

  80. There are 11 mentions of snow here already, but because this post is super relevant with weather and light, here's more.
I really like snow, cause I can relive the festive times.
I love snow in real life cause it's hilarious at times.
I wish we had snow cause there ain't none in the UK, I miss the Polish-Me times.
I'd like to have snow, cause of those sliding down hill times.
Why can't we have snow? It makes for the best times!
You should implement snow, for all the times people said the love snow.
You really should also implement snow, cause I asked you to do so. ^_^
    Snow is love.
    Snow is life.
    It's all Frozen now.

  81. First... I like the updates to the game since I first purchased it back at the 1.8 version. I'll admit that the game has come a long way over the past few updates alone.....

..... However... at the same time, I think some of the ideas implemented was just a complete waste of time to have worked on such ideas that could have waited, and/or, not been bothered with at all.

..... for example; I for one could have waited for the speed limit to be added to the GPS, in return for "more than 1 speed on the windshield wipers." And though I think the raising/lowering of your axle is pretty cool (despite it being something I will never use or bother with), I for one would have traded that idea in for maybe a chat room script (such as pogo.com idea) added to the game so we can at least chat to other players. Also, I too am eager to get my hands on the new Scandinavia DLC, but, in respect to the fact that we already have a great deal of roads to travel, I could have easily been talked into waiting for that DLC in return for.... "seasons" (falling leaves, snow). And finally, too mention just 1 more idea. I love the seat adjuster thing, as well as the seat motion physics. But again, I for one would have quickly traded both of those features for "the ability to purchase my own trailers".

Again, I like the new updates to the game, but, in my opinion, and also based on comments I've seen requested particular ideas, we seem to constantly receive updates that we really could have waited for, and continue to wait for updates that we constantly request.

At the end of the day, I want game play. NOT just a bunch of stuff to stare at. Adjusting the seat is great, but once its adjusted that part of the game becomes ....well... not used.

I would love to have more stuff to spend (in game) money on. After I buy my favorite trucks, upgrade my garages, the rest of the money I have I need to fight to get rid of. Or just let it sit there as an reminder that the game offers me nothing to spend it on. I've discovered that the economics of the game is better with very few garages. The more garages/employees you have .... the faster you earn money (which you can't get rid of). 5 favorite trucks, 1 garage, no employees (for me) keeps my bank account more of a competitive nature. (easier to spend and in more need of management). I was happy SCS updated the penalty for accidents. Now I don't have to run as many red lights to create a bill for something. Seriously... what am I supposed to do with all this freakin money? lol.

Finally, I hope the lighting work your soon to offer will fix the currently black obyss that is behind me everytime the sun goes down. I was at the train station last night trying to figure out how to back the track/trailer onto the train. (An easy idea for me that I can do.... during the daylight), however, trying to back that trailer up during the night hours is pretty close to a blind man running through the forest. Bad things are going to happen.

I toatlly agree i think the wipers should have more speeds and i mean i never had the chance to ride / drive in the snow and i mean i think we should be able to drive different cars trucks and buses, I know u got to get like 5 trucks and have a big garage just to do that. It's cool but i mean the next up sate should have some cool stuff like this. I hope with the weather thing we will have a chance to drive in the snow. Overall Great work on the game

  86. Scs do great work but i think they need to improve enviroment sound.such as brake noise ..seat movement noise..trailer noise when hitting bumps..and cabin vribation noise as well...
