American Truck Simulator Map DLC Clarifications

It's time to respond to the avalanche of questions coming our way concerning our plans for the initial edition of American Truck Simulator and its post-release future.

The day one release will contain the state of California. That was always the plan.

We are happy to confirm that on February 3rd, we will also have the state of Nevada fully ready for release. We were still not sure about Nevada's finish-line when the game box packaging design was being finalized, so the boxes sitting on retail shelves will put the spotlight on California, but there is actually more coming your way right out of the gate. In short, DLC Nevada will be a free game update for everyone, no matter where or when you will have bought the game, available immediately on official release date.

It is also public knowledge by now that we are hard at work on the state of Arizona. On the packaging of the retail box, there is actually an explicit statement that DLC Arizona will unlock for owners of this game edition when it's eventually finished. We are delighted to confirm that Arizona DLC will also be a free game update for everybody. You will just have to wait for it a little bit longer, this part of the world is still under development.

You do not really have to worry about the particular channel where to purchase the game, whether it's on Steam, in any other digital store, or in a bricks-and-mortar shop, the playable content will be the same for everybody.

Actually, we should also mention that next to this base release, several retail publishers have decided to also offer a richer (and more expensive) edition of the game on release, calling it Collector's Edition. These bigger cardboard boxes are surely nicer, they contain a cool selection of additional merchandise items, so it would be for example a very cool birthday gift with extra value. But when it comes to the game itself, the installation media is the same, and the same set of DLCs will be unlocked for those buying this special edition of the game as will for people with the regular edition of the game.

Recommended price of the game is going to be $20/€20, though it is to be expected that for alternate currencies, some local market specifics and the need to display a nice round figure may cause slight variations.

We surely do not plan to stop working on American Truck Simulator world with Arizona. However, please be aware that the road ahead of us is long, and it will take us years to cover the continent. We will continue to add features to the game with regular free updates, but most further map expansion DLCs, if not all, will be paid. We have had to pick a business model allowing us to build more than ten times the amount of content compared to what we are launching with.  If you are looking forward to drive coast to coast, you will not be able to do that now, and it will cost you more eventually than the price of the initial purchase.

It would be great to get the chance to reach the East Coast, it would be fabulous to be able to push north towards at least 60 degs latitude and south towards the Equatorial. But ultimately, it is up to you, our fans, if this happen - you will vote with your wallets. We expect to get the right guidance from you on future growth of our team to handle the new opportunities and challenges.

Thank you for your patience and support!

    6. Sounds fantastic. Count me in...kudos on the early free dlc, and great to know we will have the chance to expand the game even further if we choose.

For those that want an entire map of the north American continent for free, I'm sure there will be plenty of mods (which scs gracefully encourages) to satisfy you. And even then, you will still be allowed the satisfaction of constant whining. Everyone wins.

    7. In euro truck you get pretty much all of europe without expansions with a pricetag. in american truck sim what i expect is like 1/4 of america will be free, and the rest will be DLC:s. I know that america is so big that you need to get the pricetag a lot higher for future dlc´s if we want america all free, but I would pay that instead of dlc´s.

    10. Akula you are blinded by your stubbornness. You'd have to be a complete idiot to expect the entire US map, in the detail scs provides, for say a $50 one time payment. The business model would only serve to shut up entitled idiots and prevent the vision from actually ever becoming a reality. It's not fanboy, it's common sense, business, etc. You don't keep the doors open by pleasing those that don't want to pay.

    13. So what if Australians drive on the left side of the road. So do the British and the Japanese, Southern Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, in fact 35% of countries drive that way. Australia would be awesome because you could have road trains with 4+ trailers on those straight and dusty roads. There was an attempt to make a map in Australia but they couldn't find enough modelers to make it happen.

      Delete
    14. As an American, I would absolutely love to see Australia get their own game. They deserve it, especially after putting up with the little treatment they got in the Extreme Trucker games.

    15. I'm still working through the 18 WoS games Chronologically so I haven't seen anything of which you speak but I will tell you something, even if they got the wrong end of the stick, it is still something, more than a lot of other countries have, the ones with just as interesting of roads who didn't make it into the 18 WoS series at all. At least Australia got a bit part in the overall SCS trucking magnificence.

  5. Very good SCS. It's a pity that you haven't announced earlier that Arizona will be also free in digital version, because I had to return it and purchase box version. I will add it to steam anyway. ATS is promises to be interesting. On the downside is just that long will be waiting on the future map expands.

    1. I have an idea how you can "accelerate work" on future map extension. You can do smaller DLCs. E.g. you can add one bigger state in one DLC or two smaller and charge for it 5-7 Eur. We will have the map quicker. The cost of buying will be lower at once. It's like buying something in installments. Smaller parts but more often. I think everyone would be happy with such a solution.

  7. So $20 in the USA, €20 in Europe, but £24.99 (equivalent to $35.85/€32.74) in the UK (according to your publisher's website http://www.excalibur-publishing.com/products/american-truck-simulator)?

Nice to know Britain's gonna get royally fucked over on pricing as usual...

    1. I agree we get shafted on everything in Britain :/

    2. You can preorder for 19.99 on Amazon.co.uk, still more expensive than €20 but better than 25gbp or just wait what the price will be on steam.

Wouldn't blindly trust excalibur, they have spammed incorrect release dates and prices for nearly 2 years now.

But I agree, it would be ridiculous if the UK price would be so much higher. Luckily I don't live in the UK.

      Delete
    3. Haha, god save the queen :D It's more expensive in UK, because you need to give some money to your royal family, just like in medieval times :D

    5. Do not complain , will not be cheaper than R$ 60 in Brazil

      Delete
    6. Yeah, but 15USD in Brazil is alot because this country is fudged up lol

      Delete
    7. Karol Kostial that depends on where you're comparing it to. Average wage here is lower than the USA and several Eurozone countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_average_wage)

And if you take London out of the equation it's even lower than that (average wage in London is almost double average for the rest of the country). (http://metro.co.uk/2015/11/18/how-does-your-salary-compare-with-the-rest-of-the-country-5511194/)

That's not really the point though. The blog post says "the need to display a nice round figure may cause slight variations". Now I don't know about anyone else, but I don't consider almost double the US cost to be a "slight variation".

I just hope llvwingerden is correct and Excalibur have it wrong, but given that that isn't just a speculative price they've posted, but is in fact what they're actually charging to preorder it right now, I don't think that's the case...

      Delete
    8. To clarify, the average wage outside of London according to the Metro article I linked is £27,531 (and that's also skewed by a culture of massively overpaying those at the top, most working-class people are probably getting about £15,000). That £27,531 figure is below the likes of Slovenia and Israel.

      Delete
    9. Samuel Hill, it will be $29.16 Australian, so you have it better than we do.

      Delete
    10. £27k? Well, thats more than eleven million great hungarian forints, which is way higher than the average hungarian wage. You also said 15k, which is about half a million forints per month. Well, according to the media, the average hungarian wage is less than half of that, about 150-170k hungarian forints, translated to 340-360(!) pounds per month. And Slovenia is next to us, I don't believe they live that much better than the average hungarian. To be honest, this is why so many polish and hungarian imigrates to the UK. Just look at my numbers, its so much more. Mindblowing. To say something not off-topic aswell, the price of the game is going to be around 6k hungarian forints-a little less than 20 euros, which is probably because SCS loves us :D
Juan more statistic thingie, if you get 27k english GBP, you can buy more than a thousand copies of the game, if I would have the average hungarian wage, I could buy around 340 copies of the game.
      This is so fucking sad.

  8. For example Train Simulator is a bad example to follow. Almost every month, there is a DLC with one loco and some mission, which cost about 25E, yet base game is still bugged and sometimes unplayable. Not mention terrible graphic and bad optimization. So if you will not follow this model and I'm sure you won't because ETS2 is great, there is no reason to fear of your future. Info about two free countries sounds great, so keep it good work and you'll be fine. Truckers community is bigger than you maybe though.
Greetings from Czech Republic and sorry for English, you understand what i want to say, right? ;-)

    1. The Train sim model by itself isn't that bad (well somewhat overpriced maybe but they regularly have dlc 50% off on steam), I agree with you the execution of some dlc could be better but given the quality we've seen form SCS so far with ETS I'm not worried about the quality here.

      Delete
    2. The train simulator model is that people who play it do it as a hobby not as a game and a hobby costs a lot when you get invested in to them

      Delete
    3. llvwingerden, train simulator is a horrible business model As it is, the entire game is over $4,400. They charge anywhere from $20-$40 for a single train or route, with a very few being as low as $5.

      Delete
    4. really maybe overpriced???? are you serious? add all dlcs into your basket from train simulator and it will cost £3000 yes that's right £3k. what kind of game or dlc can cost so much??!! if you don't believe me try it. Last week it 50% discount £1500!!!!

      Delete
    5. Model already followen. They used same 2012 mechanics and by the time they take to release someshit it will be totally outdated and not suitable for next material in a minute notice.

      Delete
    6. The next incarnation of Train Simulator will be done on the Unreal 4 engine for the first time. Also Train Simulator 2014, 2015, 2016, were free upgrades. I don't think the next Train Simulator will be free, not on the Unreal engine.

      Delete
    7. I bought TS in 2012 and as Patrick mentioned I got free upgrade every year. But this upgrade only consist new UI (worst than before, for me) and that was all. No free loco or scenarios. There were any small fixes or stability update like we have with ETS2, only new dlc's. I understand that price is based on how much you love trains. You probably don't want ride steam loco if you love diesel etc. But many achievements with 0% completion tells me that maybe no one own their dlc. And that is way which not to be followed from SCS. But stop talking OT, again wish you best of luck with releasing.

This is totally bad marketing and will cause alot of compatibilities issues. What if you want to drive around Alabama without buying Texas DLC ?

      Delete
    5. Just look at how they say it. "DLC Nevada [..] be free on release". They just said vanilla map would be NV and CA. But they already call each state a DLC.

    6. Do you know what the abbreviation "DLC" even means Akula?

"downloadable content" Meaning you won't pay for it necessarily.

      Delete
    7. That's how it works,Akula...It's the same for ETS2,if you want to drive around Sweden, for example, you have to buy Denmark and Norway as well.In ATS,I think they will do paid DLCs,but with more than one state, perhaps 2 or 3,so maybe with 10 DLCs we could have the whole US covered. It sounds like a lot,but remeber that North America is huge...

      Delete
    8. It'll be interesting to see if the makers of Brazil Map for ETS2 do a version for ATS, well, it is sort of in America, after all. :D

      Delete
    9. Akula, of course all the DLC's put together will cost way more than the core game, possibly 10 times more. If you take California, Nevada, and Arizona away from the list and don't include Hawaii, you have 46 states that will have DLCs. Even if they only charged $5.00 for each one, it would cost $235.00 and there is no way the DLCs will be $5.00 considering all the expense put into the maps by SCS, that would be madness and still cheap compared to Train Simulator DLCs and twice the graphics quality, that is, Train Simulator prior to going on the Unreal 4 engine. My guess is that they will cost maybe just a fraction less than the Scandinavian DLC which was $18.99 USD.

Maybe when ATS has got all countries in North and South America covered those modelers will be able to do justice to a project. It seems that all the available modelers are working either with you, ProMods, TSM nobody to spare who knows how to do it. Be nice to have a mentoring scheme for modelers.

    1. Cant wait for this to. Its realy the amercian model to haul around with company trailers? In europe (at least Netherlands) there are alot of transporting company's with own trucks/trailers. I want to truly manage my company, not just some basic "hire driver -> buy truck --> magic -> profit" system. But actually needing to do maintenance on the trucks, check your trucks in the garage (or let them stop driving when the damage (wheels/engine system) is running low so you have to investigate.

Own your own trailers (whith skin off course!) ADR tank transporting company incoming :D

Cant wait for ATS, trucks look very nice, and maybe we can mod in some scania-T from ets2.

    1. Train Simulator operates like Microsoft's Flight Simulator series. They make/provide the base engine & game while its third parties that make the DLCs. Think of them like digital statues/models. You don't buy them all just the ones you're interested in.

      Delete
    2. The way I interpreted the text is that the total cost of all the DLCS combined will cost more that the original game and not each DLC. So each DLC will be lets say £10. 10 x 47 = £470 pounds over lets say a 5 year period get to that stage. so 470/5 = £94 a year which is about the average price for our yearly road tax. Not that much per year.

  40. My real question (and doubt): is there a limit for map?
Back in 18WoS series (even though now we have a lot more advanced engine and game) we couldn't exceed a limit for map. For example, I couldn't make a big map, from Argentina to USA, since as we advance, the truck start wobbling at road, and become impossible to control. Is it fixed?
And, we have many types of terrains at North America, from desert to ice. I think it is too early to ask, but, is there any chance to see, even DLCs, for Alaska, etc? And maybe, to Mexico?

    1. South America is America after all. Brazil is technically in America and it is American Truck Simulator.

    2. Brazil is well covered in the 2 Brazil maps I have seen for ETS2 but it would be great if the authors of those map mods for ETS2 would be able to make one for ATS as well. One of those maps is huge and graphically superb. However this one is the only one I'm sure of and it's pretty big itself. http://ets2downloads.com/maps/brasil-map-eaa

  50. Thanks SCS for this update. Really looking forward to purchasing the game on 3 February.
SCS, could you also clarify which trucks initially will be included with the game?

    Steve in Colorado

  55. I am still hoping for an ability to drive trailer full of iPhones form Apple Campus. It is near San Jose. :D

  56. Will they be adding the other American truck brands? Freightliner, Mack, International, Western Star, and Volvo? It would be awesome to see all of these plus the already implicated Peterbilt and Kenworth. The variety would be awesome and the difference of them as some trucks can be specialized for special types of hauls. Hope to see more of the states and trucks added in future updates. Thanks SCS

    1. I think Volvo will be very soon after initial release, we have already seen some screenshots of it. And SCS have already started doing more trucks, but getting license will take some time.

  57. Thanks for the update. My only wish is that you deploy a Steam branch for Oculus similar to what we have now on ETS2. After months sitting inside the truck, instead of looking at the road on a screen, I'm not sure I can play ATS old-style :D

  58. I'm a bit concerned already. I see there is a load of "tyres"....this is American truck sim please make sure the spelling is tires. It will not feel that American with spelling like that.

  60. Nice even if it was just Cal i would play it more than ETS2 atm Big Rigs / USA ftw! :P 3 Feb is coming so slow :(

  61. Awesome. IMO if $20 is enough for the release then there should be funding for the remainder of the continent. Games running for $60-80 have never offered me even 10% as many hours of entertainment as I have on ETS2.

Looking forward to this and hope it continues to evolve as ETS2 has. Amazing work fellas.

  62. So.. without wishing to belittle the amazing effort in creating a great looking new map...is there anything new like road trains or double trailers or demountables or significantly longer trailers that would give me driving challenges that I don't already have in ETS2?

  63. this is stupid making people pay for each state wow SCS is going to lose a lot of its American fans cuss we do not want to pay to travel state to state that is fucking bullshit

    ReplyDelete

    1. If you want a high quality map of each states, it takes many people a lot of time. These people need paying. It will take years, and the profit generated from the initial release will certainly not cover the salaries of years of future development. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

      Delete
    2. Timothy, you must be talking to the few Americans that are willing to settle for second best. I've talked to lots of Americans who are willing to pay for quality and that is exactly what SCS provides. Don't forget for a moment that ETS2 and ATS are both the base of a big picture trucking game that could turn out to be the ultimate driving game like an MMO eventually.

  64. I'd hope Tucson, Arizona would be available in American truck simulator as its one of the main three big cities in Arizona, I remembered that Phoenix had at least 4-6 lanes on interstate 17 on the way through Phoenix and I actually do live in Arizona so I'm super excited for Az to come out and I can afford the wait anyway.

  65. $20 is half what I was expecting the price to be, and with two free DLC states, this is even better news! Thank you for such reasonable pricing, I am so excited for this release. Between this and XCOM 2, I think I will be set on games for the next year. :D

    1. agreed.. not gonna pay $20 for just 3 states of 48

    2. Fortunately not everyone is assholes like you! So the company will be able to continue their amazing work.

    3. I hope SCS is reading your post and takes the appropriate precautions to stop people stealing their IP, bloody thieves. There ought to be a law against that, wait a minute, there is.

    4. You do know that 3 starts is to start off with. Maybe you should look for a game called 'Pirate Simulator.' It may be more suitable for you!

  67. A new for ats coming soon? @scssoftware

  68. A little sad it will only be a 2 state release, however i am pleased at the original price point, if dlc is to be as fairly priced i will happily throw you some of my hard earned dollars!

    ReplyDelete
  69. While, I am not happy that almost all the map DLC after Arizona will be paid DLC, I do understand it. If ATS is as good as ETS2, then you will have a lot of my money. Please bring Freightliner and Western Star into the mix soon. I really want to be able to drive a Western Star 5700 XE ASAP.

    ReplyDelete
  70. slightly disappointed that we are getting the west coast, but through the picture of previous post, you can get mad over it. besides the modding community is gonna blow up on it. with transfers of trucks from ETS2

  71. Great news! I have just one question that i think is relevant and i don't remember if you already said something about it: do you plan to use Vulkan API (or DX 12) in the near future? I'm saying that because it looks like your engine seems to be in front of a brickwall (i can't imagine future projects with the same refurbished "feeling"). But i'll buy ATS for sure!

  73. If you ever make an expansion to Canada, please make some of the building (such as weight station) close to reality as possible (for example these are manage by the provincial governments) :P

And if you need photos, just ask, I can help at least with Quebec :P

  74. Interesting. As SCS says, I guess to show our support we will pay with our wallets. Here is to hoping the DLC's will be vast for a decently "affordable" price. 48 States - 3 free ones would mean 45 DLC's. That being said if SCS does 3 states per DLC @ approximately $20USD(Judging by DLC Scandinavia pricing) it would total up to 15 Total DLCs with 3 states each @ $20. Total for the entire contiguous U.S. would be $300 USD + $20 USD base game... I guess over the course of years thats not so bad, plus I'm sure SCS will bundle more smaller states together or even offer them for free?(Delaware/Rhode Island/DC)

    Either

  77. Waouw! I am so excited and just $20!? That's amazing not to forget that 2 other states DLCs are free! I do hope though that the DLCs won't be more expensive than the game itself like in Train Simulator by Dovetail Games.

  78. I hope that's not the completed map of California because it looks like it's missing some pieces of it. And I kind of wish you guys would go North instead of South, much more interesting scenery up that way. But I'm still pretty excited at it finally being released, so I'll just keep on the quiet side for now.

  79. I can't wait to finally drive American trucks in there own country, I really do like American trucks, there monsters, true kings and queens of the roads, yes the Trucks in europe are tame compared to the US trucks also can't wait till the world famous route 66 hits the game, by the way as a uk driver I don't mind driving on the wrong side of the road in ETS2, good practice for the US game lol.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It'd be odd if they added the customization to have a right-hand cabin... No country in the Americas drive on left side, that practice is good.

(I am in California, I just got used to driving on the left in ETS2 lol)

      Delete
    2. Lol yeah it would be odd to drive an American truck in RHD but the trucks in the US do come in RHD for the Australians that drive on the same side of the road as use in the uk, When I started to drive in Europe on ETS 2 I had no problem getting use to it the ting i can't get use to is KPH (Kilometers per Hour) I was taught only the Imperial units, (British and American) units so find it hard to use Metric.

      Delete
    3. I barely think that the RHD option will be implemented in the game. It just makes no sense to drive a RHD in the USA. Apart from that, the right is the correct side of the road,'cause it is a fact that 80% of the planet drives on the right.

  80. Anybody who watched Paul's (aka Squirrel) video "Inside SCS" where he was invited by Pavel Sebor to visit SCS HQ and he did a series of videos 11 months ago. Anyone who saw these videos would know or have more than an inkling that Nevada would be in the initial release even though it was touted that California was going to be the only state. In one of the videos, it showed one of the map makers working on Las Vegas and one got the impression that there was going to be more than just California.

  81. Although my purchase will be delayed, I am so excited.
1.) CITIES! We actually get to drive THROUGH cities, rather than look at 2D models of them from the distance...
    2.) Murica
    3.) Murica Trucks
    -COMPLAINTS-
1.) Tyres... thought this was Murica
2.) No rip off company logos??? I dont recognize ANY of those company trailers (in the screenshots), I have driven from coast to coast 3 times and NEVER seen anything that looks close to any of those trailers... Nothing like Swift, UPS, Mayflower, Knight.. Im dissapointed :P

    1. Just wait until the guys that do the Jazzycat trailers and cargo packs for ETS2 start making trailers for ATS. Trailers are harder to get licenses to use in the game than it is to get truck manufacturers licensed. Mod authors don't have that requirement. Jazzycat brings the real company names and logos too. I hope they do the ATS ones soon after the release of ATS.

  82. It looks like the Australian players are to be shafted by the horrendous monetary policy of their rotten conservative government who have seen the AUD recede to such an extent that American Truck Simulator will be $29.16 at the present as opposed to the price of the game in USD. I doubt very much if that situation will improve any time soon. Oh well, several years back Australian dollar was $1.05 USD so I guess what goes around comes around.

    ReplyDelete
  83. SCS, I don't care if it cost 5 time what I pay for the game. To have a trucking game where I will eventually be able to drive all over the continent is priceless to me. "America" is a big place. This is not United States Truck Simulator, it is American Truck Simulator. I'm sure SCS is aware just how much work is in store for them and I for one like the thought of supporting the good work. Heck, eventually we could link ATS with ETS2 via the World of Trucks website. Anyone ready to have their own mega trucking company reaching 2 continents, I am. Anyone who plays Train Simulator will know that there is around $3,000 worth of DLCs on offer and counting. I very much doubt that ATS will reach that summit but 5 times what we pay for the initial game is pittance compared to Train Simulator, and our game's graphics are better then TS2016 anyway.

  85. What about the mapscale , is it again 19:1, (or 15:1) and 3:1 in cities ?
    And the timescale ?
I mean for compatibility in case they make in future common jobs (start europe, endpoint usa).
From my POV they could wait with release until Volvo or Freightliner would gave them the licence.

  86. I'd like to pose a question to Pavel Sebor. Pavel, is it always going to be Summer in our truck simulators ETS2 and ATS? Is there some reason why, if you get enough resources eventually to license a game engine that will allow snow in the games? Microsoft had snow in their Microsoft Train Simulator in 2001, 15 years ago.

    1. Utah and Colorado are beautiful in the winter and doubly so when it snows, it's about time we had some snow in the game, not just on the ground but falling like Train Simulator.
