Non-Steam version of ETS2 stays around

We are delighted to see your feedback for ongoing open beta of ETS2 update 1.17 on our forums. Several issues we had not been aware of were already spotted thanks to you. With Scandinavia DLC release, everyone will benefit from this community cooperation on polishing the graphics engine upgrade.

Today we would like to talk about the future of non-Steam edition of Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Our stats suggest that over 80% of copies purchased in retail were registered on Steam. Majority of active players appreciate the simple automatic updates as compared to clumsy download mirror hunt, slow patch downloads and installation, the hassle-free migration to a new computer without having to find the misplaced activation keys, and of course the availability of additional DLC bonus packages. Seeing this, it's tempting to just concentrate on our core skill of developing and evolving the game further rather than expanding our legacy key authentication system to handle more DLCs, and to just stick with Steam service for future updates and releases.

But there is still also a considerable number of hardcore ETS2 fans who swear that they will never use Steam or Origin or any comparable system. They have already bought into ETS2 and we do not want to punish them by refusing them access to critical ETS2 updates and additions. We therefore feel that we have the obligation to sustain the availability of non-Steam edition of ETS2 and the big map add-ons, and to provide regular game updates outside of Steam.

We do not guarantee that this support will last indefinitely. We plan to keep adding cool features into the game relying on Steam infrastructure and therefore be Steam-exclusive. As a result we expect the numbers of actively played non-Steam copies of the game used in the wild to dwindle further, eventually freeing us from the need to provide two alternate game update methods. But for the time being and foreseeable future, we are not going 100% Steam exclusive with Euro Truck Simulator 2 ecosystem.

In fact, we did invest considerable development capacity to come up with a new feature: the Updater.

Built on top of torrent protocol, this new utility will give you a chance to update the game without having to go to any download sites. Much like comparable proprietary game update systems (Battle.net, League of Legends...), using torrent protocol means that the updater will piggy-back on additional upload capacity of people downloading the update to serve chunks of data to other people also grabbing the update at the same time. We won't have to serve tera-bytes of data each day any more just providing game update downloads (and there was never enough bandwidth honestly), you won't need to worry about clicking a wrong link on a 3rd party mirror site.

Still, the writing is on the wall, and it's only a question of time until we "sun set" the legacy key authentication system.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Scandinavia expansion box art

It's not a coincidence that ALL boxed copies of ETS2: Scandinavia map add-on sold in retail stores by our retail publishing partners and all copies sold on various 3rd party digital download sites will be Steam-only. Our retail publishing partners opted to bundle Scandinavia expansion with various DLC packages as extra goodies. Due to our limited infrastructure, we are using Steam for all of our non-map DLCs. So retail boxes of the add-on by necessity are now packing Steam-only game installers and keys.

The non-Steam edition of the Euro Truck Simulator 2 and both map expansions will continue to exist, they will be available for purchase exclusively from the official game website at http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com.

  6. I don't know why some people hate Steam so much...

    - Game key's management: Steam: single registration - Retail: registration at every PC change/format
    - Achievements: Steam: YES - Retail: NO
    - Updates: Steam: AUTOMATIC - Retail: websites, slow download speed.
    - DLCs: Steam: fast buy and DL - Retail: slow buy and DL
    - Support: Steam: community hub - Retail: web forums (good luck)
    - SCS work: Steam: fast and simple - Retail: only problems, slow game development
Plus, on Steam, SCS can do beta testing with the help of ETS 2 players.

It's clear: ETS 2 wouldn't be the same without Steam.

    1. I think Steam is great from a devs point of view, but it's a compromise for players - it does offer some benefits, but also a lot of undesirable features and some bloat. It's perfectly reasonable that not everyone wants it.

To address your points in particular:
Game key management: yeah, Steam's easier, but it comes at the expense of having to put up with some marketing, a client which doesn't necessarily benefit the player, and some privacy issues.

Achievements - not everyone cares about achievements. I feel that they suit some games and not others - ETS2 would be better without them. Of course, nobody's forcing anyone to care about them, but it's not necessarily a benefit to everyone.

Updates: This will depend from person to person - for me personally, yeah, Steam's great and quick at keeping things updated. However, updates are not always a good thing - there are many situations where players would rather play an older version of a game, and Steam's system sometimes makes that difficult.

DLCs: Again, marketing. Great for SCS, good for some players, bad for others.

Support: I'm not familiar with the web forums, but if the community hub is being managed better, it's because more resources have been put into managing it.

Unfortunately compromises do have to be made and accepted, but - even though I'm a heavy Steam user myself - I'll never understand why people sing Steam's praises so much.

    1. Note that they said this was 80% of their retail sales that registered with Steam. That doesn't include their Steam sales, which probably accounts for like 50%+ of their total sales.

I never bought steam games, and use it only because COD MW2&3 requests steam connection.
I don't need automatic update because after every update you need to wait for compatiability of mods... It's better for me to wait when all installed mods will update.
Achievements? I don't need them too, I don't want to make a competition.
And maybe because of difficult situation in the world steam in Russia can be closed...

  18. Let's face it DRM is just a waste of time. How many time have we seen games get cracked just a few days after release. People who don't pay won't pay no matter if you have a DRM system or not. So why waste the money on crap then you can invest it in making a game people WANTS to pay for.

Anyhow you guys makes a great work. Looking forward to the DLC will be amazing I'm sure.

  19. I do hope that future expansions and game updates will be available as stand alone packs. I can see the advantage of steam games, with everything at a few mouse clicks and you have it on your PC the game or update you were wainting for, but as for me, an old school gamer, I will always love to buy a retail boxed game or add-on and just add it to my collection of games and any time just take the disc and reinstall whatever I might like.
And maybe with the update system described in this article, it might me a good idea for those like me.
About Scandinavia DLC price...well on excalibur publishing website the price is set to be £14.99. And this is for both boxed version or digital downloadable version.

  30. You will make a mistake if you make steam only games many people do not like steam and they will pirate your game. You should make both Digital And Retail CD this way people can have a choice.
Problem with steam is they can close your account (or restrict some countries) and you will lose all money and games. You do not own your games, GOG drm free is much better at least they offer a simple installer that you can save and backup and no need of always online drm and spy programs.
Steam is like a dictator takes away buyers freedom it have some good feature and some bad too.
By the way the new ETS2 DLC box art is much better.

    3. Because all instances of the game - be it Steam or not - are using the same folder for player profiles and saves, you won't lose anything (unless you delete your profile or saves folder).

If you want to move to Steam, I would recommend you make a backup (just to be sure) of the folder named "Euro Truck Simulator 2" that is placed in your DOCUMENTS folder (that is not the folder with the game in it, but profiles and saves etc.) and then register and install ETS2 through Steam. You don't even have to delete the non-steam version.

    4. @Marcusss: Thanks for the info, it is the very answer I was looking for. I have Steam but as I don't "Have" to run my games through it I don't use it much, but at least it works well unlike that pile of crap "EA" call "Origin". I bought my ETS2 GOLD as a digital download from the SCS website, I added it to my game library but still no joy so do I install it in my Steam file ?

    6. No. If you add non-steam game to your steam library, you are just adding it to the list of games but not adding it to games asociated with your steam account. What you have to do to actually add the game to your account is to click "Games" on the top menu of Steam window and click "activate product on Steam". There you can write the serial key(s) you have from your digital download and register the game to your account. Then you can download and install the game using steam as with any other game you bought on steam.

If you have two keys = for ETS2 and for Going East expansion respectively = be sure to first register ETS2 and then Going East.

  45. I am reading all your comments and I see for one more time the Steam vs Non- Steam arguments which is just a waste of time.

I cannot understand why every time you are acting like that. If you afraid if Steam will go out of business and you will loose your game, well, do this :

Buy the game and it's expansion maps the Go East and Scandinavia directly from SCS website and save them on an external hard drive. Then, activate your keys on Steam. If Steam goes out of business, you will loose only the paint jobs you'll might buy.

I was against Steam also, but when I activate the keys on Steam and also be able to play the game either from a Windows computer or a Linux computer, everything was ok.

You concern about your privacy but on the same time you have no problem to use Google's products !!!! .

You concern about piracy and you cannot understand that only if you play ETS2 on Steam you will fight the piracy.

You concern if your Steam account will get hacked but on same time you lock your house door, you lock your car, you take your safety measures. Why can't you take your safety measures with your Steam account also?

Once again : Buy ETS2 + Go East + Scandinavia directly from SCS and save it on an external hard drive and then activate the game on Steam and start playing and stop mumbling.

As I said I was against Steam because we are humans and we are always fear the changes, we don't want to try something new. Once we try those new things, then we don't look behind again.

Last but no least, none can convenience me that the people who are against Steam activation of ETS2 are having a genuine key, they are using a crack version and they worry if ETS2 be on Steam that they will have to put their hands into their pockets and buy the game.

I got sick to see every time the same argument; Steam vs No Steam. You act like you live on caves and you have no internet connection so you wont be able to log into Steam.

If I was the owner of SCS, I would announce that from now on everyone can buy the game directly from SCS website but he/she can play it only via Steam.

Every time you start crying like children that you don't want ETS2 on Steam but on the same time you have no problem buy and play GTA V on Steam, buy and play PES on Steam, buy and play few more games on Steam.

Enough is enough and either you accept the new policies ; activate the game on Steam and play it thru there, or you don't accept the new policies and you throw the game away.

    Stop acting like children.

    1. I got into ETS2 via a cracked version because games are too expensive to just buy them, I prefer to "try before I buy" and it also avoids wasting time and money.
ETS2 is a monster game with almost endless upgrade possibilities, it has a phenomenal mod community that has "SCS's" approval and it gives hours of fun for people of all ages because it's such a brilliant game.
I agree with downloading direct from the SCS site, it's what I did and it's stored on a separate drive just in case I might need to re-install at any time and personally I think we get one hell of a game for very little outlay on our part (Cheap) and I shall gladly pay for the upcoming DLC

      Delete
    2. One thing is for sure, it certainly stops piracy. If someone decides to purchase a-Box directly from SCS and the key suddenly appears on the network, they will know whom to prosecute for it, because they will have the exact figures. Those who are waiting for pirate key to SCANDINAVIA DLC, not live to see it soon. Brilliant move SCS.

"You concern about your privacy but on the same time you have no problem to use Google's products !!!! ."

If you use Google products with real information, you're an idiot!!

"You concern if your Steam account will get hacked but on same time you lock your house door, you lock your car, you take your safety measures. Why can't you take your safety measures with your Steam account also?"

You could have the longest, most secure password ever invented, but if Steam gets hacked, your password is known. If I put the most secure locks on my door, nobody gets in... see the difference?

I think with all your petty whining and tantrum throwing, you are misguided about who the children are. Nobody cares why you like Steam, because you are not buying our games.

And if it does go Steam only, then I'll stop paying and playing. If I buy a game, then I want more than worthless hard drive filler. If I get fed up with the game, I want to sell it, as I am legally entitled to do so. If developers want to make my game worthless, then why should I give them money in exchange?

There's one very important factor to remember here, developers NEED customers, customer don't NEED developers... it's just a game. So I suggest you get back under your Steam Defence League blanket, and keep your unwanted whining to yourself. Because those of us who value physical products, don't care about digital exploitation and privacy invasion... and we're sick of Steam-tards telling us how we should play OUR games.

      Delete
    4. You are right: "developers NEED customers, customer don't NEED developers..." but unfortunately look at the numbers: "Our stats suggest that over 80% of copies purchased in retail were registered on Steam." I bet that in this 20% a lot of people don't know that they can simply add the key to the Steam - so now they have a chance to do that. Fortunately for you, can buy BOX version directly from SCS site: http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com so you don't need to use Steam at all.

It's clear that you have either not read or have not been paying attention to what SCS has been saying about that all along. The issue is not how people play ETS2, it's how they buy it and how they update it. They have repeatedly said since last May that they do not have the resources to continue to offer the downloads from their own servers. That is one of the key reasons why they wanted to do business with Steam in the first place. So they have been saying for almost a year that they can't offer the downloads from their servers anymore, along with all of their retail partners and other download sources such as gamershell.com, etc. And now you think they should do it exclusively, with no more DVD's from Amazon or game stores or other download sites? You didn't even read what this blog post was about, did you? You really need to do some reading before you post on this topic again...

Howewer, I noticed one more border, which is the Spanish-Portuguese border. Because of this, I think the next add-on will be France, Spain and Portugal.
    P. S. If I'm correct, I'd be happy if you would finish Hungary, like you did with Austria (with an update). But I'd also buy the France, Spain, Portugal DLC, as I did with Going East, and as I'm going to buy Scandinavia.

    1. +1 for France, Spain, Portugal. Italy and Hungary are also started and unfinished. (And Irland has a border too.) I wish they could cover all of these in next 2 DLCs.

    2. Yeah, they should be able to make the next expansion Iberia. I would think they'd use similar assets to those in American Truck Simulator, since the textures and vegetation are more or less the same for Spain and Portugal. I hope they are aiming for this in the future. Also, maybe complete more of Italy.

  54. dear scs i now you're trying to make the game better but this beta 1.17x is the best no lagging but now this update 1.17.26 is lagging

  55. Good day! Please add to the game Euro Truck Simulator 2 , more accessories for tuning truck: light bar, bull bar, lower grille guard. And more lights and lamps.

    1. I agree, truck customization should be expanded. I'd like to see attachment points for LED's on the front grills of every truck, attachment points for different signs (TIR, ADR, L, G etc.), And most importantly; the possibility to attach airhorns directly to the roof of thr cabin, like IRL. Horns attached to roof bars just look stupid.

Offcourse there are already a lot of tuning mods that give these options, but from my experience most of these mods are either unstable (making the game crash) or outdated (not working with latest versions of ETS2).

  56. Well, as I've already done for the base game and the "going east" expansion, I will buy this new expansion.
But after a minute I will download the pirated version.
I will pay for your job, especially if as it seems you've done a very well one.
But in exchange I deserve your respect.
I want to install and reinstall the game I bought whenever I want.
    I want to play offline.
I don't want the useless steam overhead.
I repeat: I will pay for your work, but I will never ever permit you to steal my freedom.

    1. what the fuck are you talkin' 'bout?! I quote "I want to install and reinstall the game I bought whenever I want.
I want to play offline." First of all you can remove and install the game as many times as you want. For second, you can play ETS2 offline whenever you want. Once again, what the fuck are you talkin' about?!

    2. Well, I'll try to explain in simpler words, so that even you can understand.
If I have in my hands a piece of iron I can do with it whatever I want.
If I have a "code", what can I do depends on the wishes of someone else.
      It's clearer now?

      Delete
    3. AFAIK that's not even illegal. Technically it's only a pirated version if you use a crack to play it. If you activate it using a serial that you bought fair and square there's nothing wrong with that.

      Delete
    4. @ Gozol Merdoid

Yeah, OK. If you have in your hands a piece of iron you can do what you want = make 10-20 copies and sell them to your friends

If you have a "code" what you can do depends on wishes of someone else = Yeah, OK. From now on SCS will never issue "codes" so you and many others can make illegal copies and sell them.

That will have to stop. Either you activate ETS2 on Steam, or you cannot play.

      No more piracy.

Either you follow the new policies ( Steam activation ) or you cannot play ETS2

  65. I know it's not related but please can you add distance to road signs, for example on a sign:
    ^
    Manchester 10
    Birmingham 90
    >
    Liverpool 25

Thanks. It would also be great if you added northern Wales and northwestern Scotland as the area around Loch Ness and Loch Linnhe is stunning and I know your up for it graphically. Next DLC has got to France, Italy, Spain and Portugal though. Maybe you'll find time to add the rest of the UK and the roadsign thingy. A lot to ask I know, but it would make the game perfect for me. Thanks

  67. NO Steam version = pirate version.

You DO NOT have to buy the game from Steam. Buy it directly from SCS but you need to activate it on Steam in order to play it.

Those who are against play ETS2 on Steam, are people who are using pirate versions.

None force you to buy the game on Steam, but if you want to play it then activate it on Steam. That would put an end to piracy.

SCS should protect their interest, and they do correct by required Steam activation .

No more free games for the pirates. Either you activate ETS2 on Steam regardless if you bought it directly from SCS, or you cannot play it. We have to put an end to the pirates and SCS will protect their interests by required Steam activation.

    End of story.

    1. And if Steam shuts down, then what? You no longer have your game - it's not like iTunes, where you're not obligated to listen to your music in the program.

It's a nice idea, but if you don't have your game on Steam-only, then you can continue to use it even if Steam shuts down.

  70. All you are doing now days is renting your game. Steam owns your game you don't. If steam should ever go away so does your game. Do you want to spend your money on a game you don't own? or have a dvd that will last forever.

  71. Steam has screwed me out of so many games and gotten away with it I NEVER use them. I have been a faithful purchaser and updater of all SCS software products. You will be loosing a loyal customer if you go with steam only. Long live NON STEAM products!!! I have over 512 thousand KMs in ETS2 and look forward to purchasing the 1.7.x update when it's ready. Provided...... It's a non steam version...

  79. I forgot to mention the fact that i do believe that this was not a last minute decision on the part of scs i in fact do believe that scs knew they were going to pull this crap a long time ago. But waited to the last minute when everyone had there orders already in. If i had one thing to say to scs it would be don't try to change or fix what has never been broken. Just because all the other gaming companies are doing this doesn't mean you have too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. You may not lose very many customers scs but i guarantee you won't gain very many either. In my opinion people should always have that choice between disk or download. Taking the choice away from your customers will only hurt your company in the long run.

  81. Not to worry as soon as they see sales decline scs will change there tune.

  82. How does this sound scs i will pirate your game and play it for free until you decide to produce a disk at which time i will buy it from you because i would really rather buy it than steal it from you. Do you see my point? you are never going to stop people from pirating your games by going download only or trying to just save a buck. People who are honest will always buy your games.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Any game i have pirated in the past and played for free were treated as demos. I have always payed for every single game in my collection because i simply wanted the disk. I am not a thief i was just trying to make a point that any game can be cracked no matter what you do.
